On Windows, press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears; choose a capture shape and drag over the area you want. A plain Print Screen (PrtScn) press is a different command: Microsoft documents it as a full-screen image copied to the clipboard.
On a Mac, press Shift-Command-4, then drag across the portion of the display to capture. The steps below explain the selection modes, where the image goes, keyboard variations, troubleshooting, and a browser-free API option.
Windows: capture a selected region
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Wait for the screen to dim and the Snipping Tool overlay to open.
- Choose a mode from the overlay: Rectangle, Freeform, Window, or Full screen.
- Select the area, window, or display. For Rectangle, click and drag from one corner to the opposite corner.
- Use the Snipping Tool notification or editor to copy, annotate, or save the resulting image.
This shortcut is the direct Print Screen workflow when you want only part of the screen. It does not require you to capture the whole display first and crop it later.
Choose the correct Snipping Tool mode

What the plain Print Screen key does
Pressing PrtScn by itself is not the same as selecting a region. Microsoft describes it as taking a static snapshot of the entire screen and placing that image in the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor, document, email, or chat with Ctrl + V, then crop or mark it there if necessary.

If you need a region immediately, use Windows + Shift + S instead of bare PrtScn. This distinction prevents the common mistake of expecting the standalone key to open a selection box.
Copying versus saving the capture
A capture can be useful in two different ways: as pixels copied for immediate pasting, or as an image file you can keep and upload later. After a Snipping Tool capture, use the controls in the notification or Snipping Tool window to copy, annotate, or save it. The exact destination depends on the control and settings you choose, so confirm that the image was copied or saved before closing the tool.
When the Print Screen key is missing or behaves differently
Keyboard layouts and device hardware change how the key is labeled and which combinations work. Microsoft documents these alternatives:

- On a device without a dedicated PrtScn key, try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar.
- Windows + PrtScn is another documented shortcut on some hardware. Its behavior can vary by keyboard and Windows configuration.
- Some compact keyboards place Print Screen behind a function layer, so look for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or a similar abbreviation and hold Fn if required.
These variations are why Windows + Shift + S is the safest first choice for a partial capture. If none of the combinations responds, open the Start menu and launch Snipping Tool directly, then choose a mode from its capture controls.

Mac: capture part of the screen
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- When the pointer changes, click and drag over the portion of the screen you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to complete the capture.
- Use the resulting screenshot according to your screenshot settings, such as saving it or choosing a clipboard destination.
For more controls, press Shift-Command-5. Apple’s screenshot controls let you choose the capture type and destination, including a Clipboard option. Apple also notes that some applications may not allow screenshots of their windows.
Decide what to capture and where it should go

Before pasting or closing the capture tool, check whether your workflow needs a clipboard image or a file. A clipboard capture is convenient for a one-time message; a saved file is better for an upload, ticket, or later edit.

Troubleshooting partial screenshots
The screen does not dim after Windows + Shift + S
- Press the keys together rather than one at a time and make sure you are using the Windows logo key, not Ctrl.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and begin a new capture there. This separates a shortcut problem from a capture problem.
- On a compact keyboard, try the device’s Fn layer or the documented Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar alternative.
PrtScn captures everything instead of a region
That is the documented behavior of bare PrtScn. Use Windows + Shift + S and select Rectangle or Freeform when you need only part of the display.
The wrong monitor or window is captured
Move the pointer to the display or window you intend to select before choosing the mode. In Window mode, click the target window itself; in Rectangle mode, drag only across the required area. If you accidentally choose Full screen, start a new snip rather than trying to remove the extra desktop afterward.

The image seems lost
A clipboard capture is temporary. Immediately paste it into the destination application or use Snipping Tool’s save control to create a file. On Mac, open the screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5 and confirm the selected destination.

A Mac application refuses to capture
Apple documents that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. Try capturing a different window or use the application’s own export feature when available.
The shortcut works, but the result is delayed
Large displays, remote sessions, and busy applications can take a moment to render the overlay or image. Wait for the selection cursor to appear before dragging, and avoid pressing the shortcut repeatedly; repeated presses can start multiple capture attempts.
Tips for readable, useful captures
- Drag slightly beyond the text or control you need so borders and context remain visible.
- Use Window mode for software dialogs when a rectangular drag would include neighboring content.
- Capture at the display’s current scale; enlarging a small crop later can make text harder to read.
- For sensitive material, inspect the image before sharing. A region capture can still include passwords, notifications, browser tabs, or personal data near the edges.
- Annotate after capture rather than selecting an unnecessarily large area. This keeps the final image focused and reduces accidental disclosure.
