Firefox can capture a full webpage, but its built-in download is PNG. If you need JPG, either convert that PNG in an image editor or use a capture tool whose documented export options include JPG, such as the GoFullPage Chrome extension. What “whole webpage” means
A regular screenshot records only the pixels currently visible on your screen. A whole-page, full-page or entire-page capture renders content below the fold as well, producing one tall image. This can include sections that appear only after scrolling, although pages that require interaction, authentication or special loading behavior may need additional preparation.
JPG and JPEG are the same image format. JPG usually creates smaller files than PNG, but it uses lossy compression. Text, diagrams and sharp interface edges can show compression artifacts, while photographs generally compress well. Keep PNG when you need pixel-perfect text or transparency; choose JPG when compatibility or a smaller file is more important.
Method 1: Firefox’s built-in full-page screenshot
Firefox documents screenshots of either the visible portion or the full webpage. The built-in workflow downloads the image as a PNG, not a JPG, so plan on a conversion step.

- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open the page context menu and choose Take Screenshot. Depending on your Firefox version and window layout, the command may also be available from the browser menu or the address-bar page actions.
- Choose Save full page (or the equivalent full-page option) rather than the visible-area option.
- Preview the tall capture and select Download. Firefox saves the PNG to your normal downloads folder unless you have selected a different download location.
- Open the PNG in an image editor and use Save As or Export, choose JPEG/JPG, set an appropriate quality level, and save a new file. Keep the original PNG until you have checked the JPG.
Do not rename .png to .jpg; changing the extension does not change the file encoding. The conversion must be performed by an image editor or another image-conversion utility.
Check the converted file
- Open the JPG in a second viewer to confirm that it is not truncated.
- Zoom into small text, charts and icons. If they look blocky, export again with a higher quality setting.
- Confirm that the page’s bottom sections are present. Very tall images can be awkward to view or share even when the capture succeeded.
Method 2: Firefox Developer Tools
Firefox’s developer documentation also describes an entire-page screenshot workflow and a --fullpage option. The documentation establishes full-page capture, not JPG output, so the resulting file should be treated as a PNG until you convert it.
- Open Developer Tools using your Firefox version’s documented shortcut or the browser menu.
- Use the Developer Tools screenshot command and select the option for the complete page.
- Where the command accepts a full-page flag, use
--fullpageas documented by Firefox. - Save the resulting image, inspect it, and convert the PNG to JPG in an editor if that is the required delivery format.
Developer Tools labels and shortcut behavior can change between Firefox releases. If you do not see an entire-page command, use the regular Screenshot UI instead.
Method 3: A browser extension that exports JPG
The GoFullPage listing in the Chrome Web Store advertises full-page capture and JPG export. That makes it a direct route when you specifically need a JPG without a separate conversion step. The JPG and full-page capabilities are claims in the vendor’s listing; they have not been independently tested here, and an extension may not handle every site or page state identically.

- Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store and review the permissions shown by Chrome.
- Open the target webpage, dismiss overlays that cover content, and scroll or interact if the page requires it to load sections.
- Run the extension’s full-page capture command.
- Choose its JPG export option, if shown, and save the file.
- Open the result and check the top, middle and bottom of the page for missing or duplicated sections.
Remove the extension when you no longer need it if your organization does not permit persistent browser extensions. For sensitive pages, check your company’s policy before sending page content through any extension.

Use Firefox when you want a local, no-extension workflow and can tolerate conversion. Use an extension when its JPG export and permissions fit your policy. Use an API when captures must run from scripts, a backend, a CI job or an AI-agent workflow.
Preparing a page for a reliable full-page image
Wait for content to finish loading
Modern pages often load images, fonts and sections lazily. Wait until the page has settled, then inspect several scroll positions before capturing. If a page fills content only after scrolling, scroll through it once and return to the top before starting the capture.
Handle overlays and consent dialogs
Cookie notices, newsletter forms and chat widgets can cover the page or become part of the image. Close them manually in a browser workflow. A capture that starts before a consent dialog is accepted may record the dialog on every section.

Expect difficult page types
- Infinite scroll: there may be no final page height, so a “full page” tool can stop at a cutoff or capture only the initially loaded content.
- Authenticated or private pages: the capture must run in the same signed-in session; never upload confidential content to an unapproved service.
- Animations and carousels: different sections can be captured at different moments. Pause animations when possible.
- Cross-origin frames: embedded content may be restricted or rendered differently from the surrounding page.
- Very tall pages: browser memory limits can produce blank bands, duplicated areas or failed downloads. Capture sections separately if a single image is not practical.

The image contains only the visible screen
You selected a visible-area command instead of a full-page command, or the page reported an incorrect height. Repeat the capture with Firefox’s full-page option or the extension’s full-page mode. For an automated job, explicitly enable full-page capture and verify the returned dimensions.

The downloaded file is PNG, not JPG
That is expected from Firefox’s documented screenshot workflow. Export the PNG as JPEG in an image editor, or use a tool that explicitly offers JPG export.
Lower sections are blank or missing
Wait for lazy content, scroll through the page once, disable obstructive overlays, and try again. If the page is infinite or exceeds browser memory, capture logical sections separately or use an API with waiting, resizing and resource controls.
The page is duplicated or stitched incorrectly
Fixed headers, sticky elements and animated layouts can change while a tool scrolls. Hide the sticky selector, pause animation, or use a controlled viewport and custom CSS. Check whether the page changes height during capture.
The API response is not an image
Inspect the HTTP status and response headers before saving the body. Confirm the access key, URL encoding and permissions, and read X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed. A failed load, bot check or blank page should be diagnosed from the verdict rather than treated as a valid JPG.
The JPG looks soft
Export at a higher quality, increase the capture’s retina scale, or request a larger viewport before resizing. Avoid repeatedly opening and re-saving the same JPG, because each lossy export can remove more detail.

No. A full-page screenshot is one raster image of the rendered page. PDF is a paginated document format and may reflow content, omit interactive states or use different page breaks.
Why is my whole-page JPG extremely tall?
The image includes all captured content below the fold. If the dimensions are impractical for sharing or editing, capture sections or use image resizing after verifying that important text remains readable.
Should I use JPG or PNG for text-heavy pages?
PNG preserves sharp edges and is usually better for dense text, diagrams and transparency. JPG is useful when a smaller, broadly supported photographic image is the requirement.
