What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To capture a dropdown or context menu before it disappears, open the full Snipping Tool app, set Delay to 1–5 seconds (5 seconds gives the most time), choose a snipping mode, and select New. Open the menu during the countdown. When the screen dims, drag around the menu. The result opens in Snipping Tool for saving, copying, annotating, or sharing. Microsoft documents this workflow in its Snipping Tool instructions.
Use a delayed snip for a menu that closes on its own
A delayed capture prevents the first click on Snipping Tool from stealing focus and closing the menu. It works for standard dropdowns, right-click context menus, and hover menus.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu. You can also press Windows logo key + Shift + S or Print Screen, but those shortcuts start an immediate capture and do not give you the full app’s delay controls.
- In the full app, select Delay and choose a value from 1 to 5 seconds. Select 5 seconds if opening the menu requires several clicks. Microsoft also lists Alt+D as a shortcut for delay capture.
- Select Mode. Rectangle is normally best for a dropdown. Choose Window for an entire application window, Full screen for everything visible, or Free-form for an irregular outline.
- Select New. The countdown starts immediately.
- Before the countdown ends, open the dropdown, right-click to open the context menu, or hover to reveal the menu.
- When the display turns gray or dims, drag around the visible menu. Release the mouse to complete the snip.
- In the Snipping Tool window, use Ctrl+S or Save Snip to save it. Ctrl+C copies it for pasting into an email, document, or support ticket. Pen and Highlighter tools let you mark an item before you share it.
Keep the pointer outside the selection when possible. A cursor over a menu item can hide text or make the result harder to read; move it aside immediately after opening the menu and before the screen dims.
Capture a menu that is already open
If the dropdown or context menu is visible and remains open, Microsoft documents a direct sequence that avoids configuring a timer:

- Open Snipping Tool.
- Open the menu you want to capture.
- Press Ctrl+PrtSc.
- Choose the snipping mode, then drag over the menu when the screen dims.
This method is useful when the menu stays open despite focus changing. If pressing the shortcut closes it, return to the delayed workflow; the timer is designed for menus that vanish as soon as another control receives focus. The direct sequence and wording are documented by Microsoft Support.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | Best use | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | Most dropdowns and context menus | Only the area you drag over |
| Window | A menu whose context is important | An entire application window |
| Full screen | Showing where the menu appears | Everything displayed on the monitor |
| Free-form | Irregular menus or partial regions | A hand-drawn outline |
Use Rectangle when the goal is a compact image of the options. Use Window when a reviewer needs to know which program produced the menu. Full screen can be excessive for documentation and may expose unrelated information, so crop to the menu when privacy matters.
Timing menus that disappear quickly
Start with five seconds
Five seconds is the maximum delay documented by Microsoft. It gives you time to move from the Snipping Tool controls to the application, click the trigger, and position the pointer. If the menu opens reliably, repeat with a shorter delay to reduce waiting.

Use the menu’s normal trigger
For a dropdown, click the field or arrow as you normally would. For a context menu, right-click the target. For a hover menu, place the pointer over the trigger and keep it there. Do not click the screen after the menu opens unless the menu itself requires that action; another click can dismiss it before capture begins.
Capture submenus
Open the parent menu during the countdown, then move to the item that reveals the submenu. Wait until both levels are visible when the screen dims, and drag a rectangle that includes both. If the submenu appears too late, repeat with the full five-second delay.
Save, copy, annotate, and share the result
- Save: Select Save Snip or press Ctrl+S, then choose a filename, location, and supported image format offered by your Windows installation.
- Copy: Press Ctrl+C in the Snipping Tool window and paste into the destination application.
- Annotate: Use Pen or Highlighter to point out an option. Keep marks outside the menu text when the screenshot is intended as a precise reference.
- Share: Use the app’s sharing action after saving or copying. Microsoft describes saving, copying, annotating, and sharing as available actions for a completed snip.
Troubleshooting
The menu closes before I can select an area
Start the capture from the full Snipping Tool app and set Delay before selecting New. Do not begin with Windows+Shift+S when you need time to open the menu. Select 5 seconds and open the menu only after the countdown begins.

The menu is already open, but Ctrl+PrtSc does not work
Make sure the Snipping Tool app is open first, then press Ctrl+PrtSc. If the menu still closes, use the delayed method. Keyboard layouts, laptop function-key layers, or an application that intercepts Print Screen can change how the shortcut behaves; on those systems, the app’s New button with Delay is the dependable path.
I need more than five seconds
Snipping Tool’s documented delay range ends at five seconds. Break the setup into fewer actions, use the five-second setting, or repeat the capture after practicing the menu sequence. There is no documented longer timer in the supplied Microsoft instructions.

Choose Rectangle and begin dragging just outside the menu’s outer edge. If the menu is difficult to outline because it moves, use Window mode and crop the saved image afterward. Full screen is a fallback when a menu extends across windows or monitors.

The image is blank or the menu is missing
Repeat the capture and wait until the screen visibly dims before dragging. A drag made before dimming is not the completed snip. For animated or hover menus, keep the pointer over the trigger until the capture begins, then move it away without clicking.

When the thing you need to capture is a web page rather than a local Windows menu, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the API documentation at screenshotneo.com/docs/ for authentication and options. This basic cURL request saves a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The equivalent Python request is:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
In Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Beyond basic captures, ScreenshotNeo supports full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector hiding, waits for selectors, delays or network idle, blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration.

Practical choice: Snipping Tool or an API?
- Use Snipping Tool when a person is interacting with a Windows application, especially a native dropdown or context menu.
- Use Delay when opening the menu changes focus or immediately dismisses it.
- Use Ctrl+PrtSc when the menu is already open and stays visible.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when the target is a web URL, you need repeatable captures, or an automated workflow should handle consent overlays and failed pages.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a right-click menu with Snipping Tool?
Yes. Set a 1–5 second Delay in the full Snipping Tool app, select New, right-click during the countdown, and drag around the context menu after the screen dims.
What is the fastest way to capture an open dropdown?
With Snipping Tool already open, open the dropdown and press Ctrl+PrtSc, then select the capture area. If it closes, use a delayed New capture instead.
Which delay should I use?
Use five seconds when the menu takes time to reach; reduce the delay after you can open it reliably.
