To screenshot a Twitter thread, open the post that starts the thread on X, choose Show this thread when it appears, and use your phone or computer’s built-in screenshot command. A normal screenshot saves only what is visible, so a long thread usually requires several overlapping images. Keep the original post link when readers may need live context, replies, media, or verification.
What counts as a Twitter thread?
X (formerly Twitter) uses a thread for a series of connected posts by one person. From a post in the series, X can offer Show this thread to display the connected posts together. The control may be available on the opening post or another post in the sequence, depending on how you reached it.
A screenshot is a static copy of the pixels currently displayed. It does not preserve links, replies, video playback, alt text, timestamps that are outside the captured area, or later edits. If the audience needs the source, share the original X post or thread as well as the image.
How to capture an entire thread on a phone
1. Open the thread at its source
- Open the X app or X in your mobile browser.
- Navigate to the original post that begins the thread, or to a connected post you trust.
- Tap Show this thread if X displays it. If the option is not visible, open the author’s connected posts manually and check that they are from the same account.
2. Prepare a readable view
- Close menus, keyboards, notification shades, and floating chat heads.
- Set text size and browser zoom so the post text is legible without making each image unnecessarily short.
- Wait for images and videos to finish loading. A video frame is only a still image in the screenshot.
- Leave the author name, handle, and enough of the post text visible to establish attribution.
3. Take the first screenshot
Use your phone’s normal screenshot control. On an iPhone, this is normally the side button plus the volume-up button on models with Face ID, or the side/top button plus the Home button on models with a Home button. Apple’s screenshot guidance also covers editing, saving, and sharing. Button layouts can differ by model and iOS version.

On Android, use the screenshot command supplied by your device. Many phones use Power plus Volume Down, but manufacturers can provide gesture, quick-settings, or stylus controls instead. Google’s Android guidance notes that controls vary by device, so use the method shown in your phone’s help or settings.
4. Continue through the thread
- Scroll until the next post is fully readable.
- Keep a small overlap with the previous image. Repeating the last line or the post number makes ordering unambiguous.
- Capture again and repeat until the final post, media caption, and any important attribution are included.
5. Review and organize
Open the screenshots in your gallery and check them at full size. Delete frames with loading errors, clipped text, accidental notifications, or duplicate content. Rename or number the files if you will send them separately. If you plan to publish a collage, assemble the images in reading order without shrinking text below a comfortable size.
Can an iPhone save a whole X thread as one image?
Apple supports a Full Page screenshot option in some apps and documents. The availability of that option depends on the context; Apple’s guidance does not establish that the X app supports one-image full-page capture for a thread. If Full Page appears after you capture, inspect the result carefully before deleting the individual screenshots. If it does not appear, use the overlapping-image method above.
Do not assume that a full-page result will include every post. A feed may load more content only as you scroll, and an app can expose a different capture surface than a web document.

How Android screenshot controls affect the result
Android phones share the basic screenshot capability, but button combinations and scrolling-capture tools are manufacturer-specific. Some devices show a Capture more, Scroll, or similarly named option after the first screenshot; others do not. Treat such a control as optional rather than a guaranteed way to capture an X thread. If the option stops early or omits posts that load dynamically, return to separate screenshots with overlap.
Before sharing, check that system navigation bars, notification banners, and private notifications are not visible. Android’s editing tools can crop those areas, but cropping cannot restore text that was already outside the frame.
Taking screenshots on a desktop
X can be used on desktop, but the exact screenshot keystrokes depend on Windows, macOS, Linux distribution, and installed utilities. Use your operating system’s official screenshot tool rather than relying on a universal shortcut. The workflow is the same:
- Open the thread and select Show this thread.
- Resize the browser so the post column is wide enough to read.
- Capture the visible region, scroll by a controlled amount, and capture again with overlap.
- Review each image for clipped media, hidden replies, or loading placeholders.
A browser’s “save page” or print-to-PDF function is not equivalent to a screenshot: it may reflow the feed, omit posts loaded after scrolling, or preserve a live page rather than a visual record.

X supports sharing a post through direct message, SMS, or email. A shared post can lead recipients to the connected thread. Protected posts have a limitation: X’s help guidance says they cannot be shared through direct message. If access is restricted, do not present a screenshot as a substitute for permission to redistribute the content.

Improving readability and privacy
Keep the reading order obvious
- Capture from the first post to the last rather than jumping between replies.
- Use consistent zoom and orientation.
- Overlap one or two lines between frames.
- Include post boundaries, author handles, and timestamps when they matter to your use case.
Protect private information
- Crop notification banners, direct-message previews, email addresses, and unrelated account details.
- Blur phone numbers or names only when the edit will not misrepresent the post.
- Do not remove attribution or context that changes the meaning.
Handle media and accessibility
Images, charts, and quoted posts may need their own close-up screenshot if text is too small in the main frame. A screenshot does not carry alt text or selectable text, so provide a descriptive caption or link for readers who need accessible content.
Troubleshooting common problems
“Show this thread” is missing
You may be viewing a standalone post, a reply from another account, or a thread whose posts are not connected in the way X recognizes. Open the author’s profile, locate the earliest post, and follow the sequence. If the account is protected, only approved followers can view the posts.
The screenshot cuts off the last lines
Scroll slightly less before each capture and leave a margin below the final line. Re-capture the affected frame; stitching a clipped image cannot recover missing pixels.

Use multiple images with overlap. Dynamic feeds can stop loading, change layout, or omit posts during a long capture, so verify the sequence manually.

Images or videos are blank
Wait for the media to load, check your connection, and capture again. If a video is essential, include the source link because a screenshot preserves only one frame.
Text is unreadable after sharing
Send original-resolution files or a link to a full-size album. Avoid placing many tall screenshots into one compressed image. If you must create a collage, use fewer panels per row and check it on a phone before publishing.
The screenshot includes private notifications
Enable a focus or do-not-disturb mode, clear the notification shade, and crop the frame before sharing. Review every image at full size; a notification can be visible even when it is easy to miss in a thumbnail.

Use the original X link when readers need live replies, quoted posts, author profiles, media playback, or a way to verify the wording. Use screenshots when you need a fixed visual record, offline access, or evidence of how the page appeared at a particular time. In many cases the strongest handoff is both: numbered images for quick reading and the source link for context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a protected X thread?
Only if your account is permitted to view it. Access restrictions remain in force, and a screenshot should not be redistributed beyond the permission you have.
Will screenshots include replies to the thread?
Only replies that are visible in the captured area. A thread’s connected posts and its replies are different parts of the page, so capture them deliberately if they are relevant.
Why is my screenshot different from another person’s?
X can show different layouts, media loading states, account permissions, and device dimensions. Record the device, browser or app, and capture time when those details matter.
