There is no single image size that works for every social platform. Choose dimensions for the exact placement—such as a feed post, profile picture, Story, link preview, or banner—and keep important text and subjects inside the area that survives cropping. The dimensions below are practical starting points; only the YouTube and LinkedIn figures identified as official are platform recommendations or specifications.
How to choose the right social media image size
Start with the placement, not just the platform. A square profile image, a vertical Story, and a wide link preview have different aspect ratios and may be displayed or cropped differently. A larger pixel count does not fix a mismatch in shape.
- Identify the exact placement and account type. A LinkedIn Page post with a URL, for example, uses a different image treatment from a LinkedIn article cover.
- Match the aspect ratio and dimensions. Use the platform recommendation when one is available; otherwise treat a cross-platform guide’s dimensions as a starting canvas.
- Protect the important content. Keep logos, faces, and text away from edges and within any published safe area.
- Preview before publishing. Check the upload preview and, for banners, different device presentations. Cropping and padding can vary between placements and screens.
The broad reference table below follows Hootsuite’s September 2026 cross-platform guide. Its measurements are secondary-guide conventions, not universal official requirements. Confirm them in the current platform help page or publishing interface when precise text placement matters.

The table is not a complete set of platform-verified mandates. In particular, conflicting or placement-specific figures appear in secondary references for Instagram grid crops, Facebook covers, and LinkedIn banners. TikTok’s 20 × 20 profile-picture figure in the referenced guide is not a useful design canvas; check the current upload interface instead.

What size should a social media post be?
For a conventional square feed graphic, 1080 × 1080 is a useful starting point in the Hootsuite September 2026 reference for Instagram and Facebook. For portrait-oriented feed artwork, that guide lists 1080 × 1350 for Instagram and 720 × 900 for LinkedIn. Its X landscape starting point is 1280 × 720. These are placement-specific reference dimensions, not proof that every image in those feeds must use that size.
When the post links to a webpage, distinguish the image attached to the post from the image a platform extracts from the destination page. LinkedIn’s official recommendation for a custom image on a Page post with a URL is 1200 × 627 pixels (1.91:1). LinkedIn says an image narrower than 200 pixels appears as a thumbnail on the left. On mobile, the image may show white padding instead of the desktop crop. Do not use that link-preview recommendation as a general LinkedIn profile, feed, or cover size.

What size should a Story or Reel be?
For Instagram and Facebook Stories/Reels, and TikTok’s vertical image/ad format, Hootsuite’s September 2026 reference lists 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 canvas. Keep titles, logos, and faces away from the regions occupied by app controls and captions. Exact overlays can vary by placement and interface, so inspect the preview rather than assuming every edge is visible.
What size should a profile picture be?
The September 2026 Hootsuite guide lists 320 × 320 pixels for Instagram and 400 × 400 for X and LinkedIn; for Facebook it lists 196 × 196. These are starting dimensions from a secondary reference. Profile images are commonly shown small and may be masked into a circle, so center the recognizable subject and avoid placing fine text or essential details in the corners. Check the upload preview for the account you are using.

What size should my cover photo or banner be?
YouTube channel banner
YouTube’s official Help guidance recommends a 2560 × 1440 pixel banner for best display across devices. The stated minimum is 2048 × 1152 at 16:9. At minimum size, keep text and logos within the 1235 × 338 pixel safe area. YouTube also sets a 6 MB maximum file size and notes that the banner can be cropped differently on computer, mobile, and TV. Design on the full canvas, keep essential content in the safe area, and preview on multiple device views. YouTube’s recommendation is specific to a channel banner, not a general social cover image.
Facebook and X covers
Hootsuite’s September 2026 cross-platform table gives 851 × 315 pixels for a Facebook cover and 1500 × 500 for an X header. Treat these as starting points: the Facebook presentation should be checked for the current Page, and the X header should be previewed for cropping. The figures are not established here as current official specifications.
LinkedIn cover placements
Hootsuite lists 1128 × 191 pixels for a LinkedIn cover placement, but that number should not be applied to every LinkedIn Page module. LinkedIn’s current Page cover specification differs by module, so identify the precise destination before exporting. An article cover is a separate placement: LinkedIn recommends 1920 × 1080 pixels and says article covers are cropped to 16:9.

How to keep important content from being cropped
- Put logos, faces, and text toward the center rather than against canvas edges.
- Use a platform-published safe area when one is available; for a YouTube banner uploaded at its minimum dimensions, that area is 1235 × 338 pixels.
- Do not assume a cover displays identically on desktop, mobile, and TV. YouTube explicitly documents device-dependent banner cropping.
- For a LinkedIn Page post link image, account for the documented mobile padding and desktop treatment.
- For unverified or secondary-guide sizes, use the platform’s current upload preview and help page for the exact account and placement.
A practical workflow for making multiple crops
- Keep a master. Save an editable source image at a size large enough for the largest intended canvas.
- Create placement-specific versions. Export separate files for square posts, portrait feeds, vertical Stories/Reels, link previews, and banners rather than stretching one crop to fit all.
- Reposition the subject for each crop. Resizing alone can push text or faces into a crop zone; adjust the composition on the destination canvas.
- Check the exported file. Confirm pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, legibility at small display sizes, and any platform file-size limit that applies.
- Preview in the destination interface. Inspect the actual post or banner preview before publishing, especially for graphics with text or logos.
