Snagit can turn words in a screenshot into editable text with its Grab Text OCR feature. For text currently visible on your screen, open Snagit Capture, choose Image, set Selection to Grab Text, drag over the words, then select Copy All in Grab Text Results. For a screenshot already in Snagit Editor, right-click the image on Windows (or Control-click on Mac), choose Grab Text, and copy the result.
Capture text that is currently on your screen
This method is best when the words are in a browser, PDF viewer, application window, video frame, or another visible screen region.
- Open Snagit Capture and select the Image tab.
- Open the Selection menu and choose Grab Text.
- Start the capture with the Capture button or your configured shortcut. Snagit Help 2023 lists Print Screen for Windows and Shift+Ctrl+C for Mac, but shortcuts can be changed and may differ by version.
- When the orange crosshairs appear, drag around the text you need. Keep the selection as tight as practical.
- Snagit opens Grab Text Results in Editor. Select Copy All.
- Paste the text into a document, email, spreadsheet, note, or other application.
To return to ordinary image captures, open the Capture window again and change the Selection option from Grab Text to your preferred region, window, or full-screen mode.
Extract text from a screenshot already open in Snagit Editor
You do not need to recapture an image that is already on the Editor canvas.

- Open the screenshot in Snagit Editor.
- On Windows, right-click the image. On Mac, Control-click it.
- Select Grab Text.
- In Grab Text Results, select Copy All, then paste the recognized text where you need it.
If the screenshot contains several unrelated areas, use the option to grab text from only part of the image. Selecting one paragraph, column, or label at a time generally produces a cleaner result than processing a busy page as one block.
What Grab Text does—and what it does not
Grab Text uses optical character recognition (OCR) to detect letters in an image and convert them to editable text. It gives you a copy-and-paste result; it is not a guarantee that the original typeface, columns, spacing, tables, or line breaks will be reproduced perfectly. Plan to proofread names, numbers, punctuation, and formatting before using the result in a final document.

Prepare an image for more accurate OCR
OCR accuracy depends heavily on the pixels Snagit receives. Before running Grab Text, make the text easy for a person to read.
- Increase readable size: Zoom the source or capture a higher-resolution region when letters are tiny.
- Use clear contrast: Dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background is easier to recognize than low-contrast text.
- Straighten angled text: Rotate a slanted screenshot before running Grab Text. Snagit may miss text that is tilted.
- Crop tightly: Select the text inside a bounding box rather than including the box, controls, icons, and surrounding artwork.
- Avoid decorative effects: Outlines, shadows, unusual glyph or symbol fonts, and heavily stylized lettering can produce incorrect characters.
- Expect handwriting limits: Handwritten and cursive text may be missing or inaccurate.
- Handle accented characters carefully: Proofread names and words containing accents or other diacritics.
For a very large scrolling, panoramic, or extremely tall capture, first select a smaller section. Processing a huge image can take a long time and may make it harder to isolate the text you actually need.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect text
Grab Text is unavailable or does not start
Confirm that you are using an image capture mode and that Selection is set to Grab Text. If the image is already in Editor, invoke Grab Text from the image’s context menu instead. Verify that Snagit is active and that another application has not taken over the configured shortcut.
The result is blank or misses words
Recapture a smaller region at a larger readable size. Improve contrast, remove surrounding controls, and try again. Text inside a border or callout should be selected inside the border, not together with its outline. If the source is angled, rotate it first.
Characters are wrong
Check especially small fonts, accented words, symbols, shadows, outlines, and decorative typefaces. OCR can confuse similar characters such as “O” and “0” or “l” and “1.” Compare the copied text with the screenshot rather than assuming every character is correct.
Processing takes too long
Cancel if necessary and work on a cropped portion. Large scrolling or panoramic images contain many pixels and may take substantially longer than a normal region capture.

Copy All crashes or behaves unexpectedly
Install the latest maintenance release available for your edition and operating system, then retry with a smaller selection. Snagit for Windows version history records a crash fix for Copy All in the Grab Text Results dialog in version 2026.2.0. The same history lists OCR licensing maintenance in 2026.1.1. These version notes apply to the Windows history, not automatically to Mac.
Snagit version and system considerations
Snagit’s Windows 2026 history identifies an improved OCR-processing option as experimental in version 2026.0.0. Do not assume that experimental behavior is enabled for every installation. Check the version history and your installation’s settings before attributing a different result to that feature.
TechSmith’s store listing observed on September 29, 2026, showed Snagit Individual at $39.00 per user per year when billed yearly, with macOS 14 or later and Windows 10/11 compatibility. Pricing, supported releases, and system requirements can change, so confirm the live store and requirements pages before purchasing or upgrading.
When to use Snagit and when to use an API
Snagit is the practical choice when you are sitting at a computer and need to select text visually, check the result immediately, or annotate the source image. An API is more suitable when a script, build process, documentation system, or AI workflow must capture URLs repeatedly without manual dragging. An API captures the webpage; it does not replace Snagit’s OCR workflow unless you add a separate OCR step afterward.

Practical workflow for reliable text capture
- Display the source at a readable zoom and wait for dynamic content to finish loading.
- Capture only the paragraph, field, or table you need.
- Run Grab Text and use Copy All.
- Compare names, dates, amounts, URLs, and code with the image.
- Restore your normal Capture Selection setting when finished.
- Save the original screenshot alongside the edited text so you can audit or correct the transcription later.

Does Grab Text preserve the screenshot’s formatting?
It returns recognized editable text. Exact fonts, layout, columns, and line breaks may require manual correction.
Can I extract text from only part of an image?
Yes. Invoke Grab Text on the Editor image and choose a partial selection, or crop/select the required region before processing.
