Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe quickest way to record a browser is Loom’s Chrome extension: open the recorder, choose Current Tab, Window, or Full Screen, select your microphone, optionally enable the camera, and start. A three-second countdown appears; stop with the red control, then review, edit, and share the recording in Loom.
This guide explains that workflow, browser and operating-system limits, audio and webcam choices, Chrome’s built-in capture APIs, and when a desktop recorder is better. If you only need a still image rather than video, the ScreenshotNeo section shows a one-call alternative.
Choose the recording method first
| Method | Best for | Capture scope | Audio and camera | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loom Chrome extension | Fast browser demonstrations and hosted sharing | Current tab, a window, or the full screen | Microphone and optional face camera | Designed for Chrome; Firefox and Safari cannot launch it directly |
| Loom desktop app | Workflows that move between browser and other applications | Full screen, window, or camera | Microphone and system audio | Loom documents support for Mac and Windows, not Linux or ChromeOS |
| Chrome web APIs | Extensions and custom recording applications | User-selected tab, window, or screen | Microphone and, when permitted, tab/system audio | You must build the recorder, storage, controls, and sharing workflow |
Decide whether the result should be a hosted link or a local file before recording. Loom is optimized for a guided recording and sharing workflow. A custom API implementation gives you control over encoding and storage but requires substantially more engineering.
Record a browser tab with Loom’s Chrome extension
- Install and open the extension. Use Chrome, then open Loom’s recorder from the browser toolbar. The extension is also available for Chromium browsers such as Edge, Opera, and Brave, but Loom does not guarantee full compatibility outside Chrome.
- Select the capture area. Choose Current Tab for one page, Window for a browser window, or Full Screen for the entire display. Check the preview so private tabs, notifications, and unrelated windows are not included.
- Configure the microphone. Pick the input device you will narrate with. Speak a short test sentence and watch the input indicator before starting. A USB microphone is optional, but it can improve narration when the laptop microphone is noisy or distant.
- Add a camera if needed. Turn the camera on for a face-cam bubble or use Loom’s Screen and Camera mode. A USB webcam is optional when the built-in camera is poorly positioned or low quality.
- Start and stop. Start recording, wait through Loom’s three-second countdown, and perform the demonstration. Use the red stop control to finish.
- Review and share. After stopping, Loom opens the recording for viewing, editing, and sharing. Watch the first few seconds to confirm that the intended tab, microphone, and camera were captured.
Recording a tab with sound
Enable the microphone when you need narration. If your demonstration depends on audio produced by the page, verify the recorder’s tab or system-audio option before starting; available audio controls depend on the capture method and operating system. A quick test recording catches muted tabs, wrong input devices, and echo before you make the full lesson.

Recording your browser and face together
Enable the camera and position the bubble where it does not cover buttons, menus, or text. For software instruction, keep the browser content as the primary view and use the smallest camera overlay that remains readable.
Use Firefox or Safari
Loom’s Chrome extension cannot be launched from Firefox or Safari. To record those browsers, either open the recording workflow from a supported Chromium browser or use the Loom desktop app. The desktop app is the broader choice when you need to move between browser windows and other applications.
Desktop app coverage
Loom documents full-screen, window, camera, and system-audio capture on Mac and Windows. It does not document compatibility with Linux or ChromeOS. On an unsupported operating system, use a recorder that explicitly supports that platform or build a browser-based solution with the APIs below.
Build a browser recorder with Chrome APIs
For an extension or web recorder, Chrome documents navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({ audio: true, video: true }). Calling getDisplayMedia() opens a permission dialog in which the user chooses a tab, window, or screen. Chrome also provides a visible indication that capture is active.

- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Minimal capture example
const stream = await navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({
video: true,
audio: true
});
const recorder = new MediaRecorder(stream);
const chunks = [];
recorder.ondataavailable = event => {
if (event.data.size > 0) chunks.push(event.data);
};
recorder.onstop = () => {
const blob = new Blob(chunks, { type: recorder.mimeType });
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = url;
link.download = 'browser-recording.webm';
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
};
stream.getTracks().forEach(track => {
track.addEventListener('ended', () => {
if (recorder.state !== 'inactive') recorder.stop();
});
});
recorder.start();
The browser still asks the person to choose what to share; a script cannot silently select a tab or screen. Keep a visible stop button in your UI and stop all tracks when recording ends. The example creates a WebM download; production software should check supported MIME types, handle storage limits, and provide an upload or conversion path appropriate to its users.
Extension tab capture and navigation
Chrome’s tabCapture API is intended for extensions that need tab audio and video. If capture starts from a content script, navigating the page can end the recording. Chrome recommends an offscreen document for recording across navigations. Design your extension around that lifecycle: preserve recorder state outside the page, show recording status, and handle a tab being closed or permission being revoked.
Permission and privacy requirements
- Explain exactly whether the user is sharing a tab, window, or full display before invoking capture.
- Never assume that audio is available; the user and browser decide which sources can be shared.
- Stop tracks immediately when the user clicks Stop, closes the tab, or ends sharing from the browser’s indicator.
- Tell users where files are stored or uploaded and avoid recording passwords, private messages, or unrelated windows.
Improve quality before you press Record
Audio checklist
- Choose the intended microphone rather than leaving an uncertain system default.
- Move a USB microphone close to your mouth and away from fan noise. It is an optional upgrade, not a requirement.
- Record a short test to detect silence, clipping, or an echo caused by speakers feeding back into the microphone.
- Mute notifications and close unrelated tabs so their sounds do not enter the recording.
Video and presentation checklist
- Use a stable browser window size and zoom level so controls remain readable.
- Close password managers, personal email, and other sensitive tabs before selecting Window or Full Screen.
- For a face camera, place the light in front of you and keep the camera bubble away from the task area.
- Explain clicks and pauses at a pace viewers can follow; a clean, deliberate demonstration is easier to edit than a rushed one.
Troubleshooting common failures
The extension does not appear or cannot start
Confirm that you are using Chrome or a supported Chromium browser and that the extension is enabled. Firefox and Safari cannot launch this Chrome-extension workflow; switch to Chrome or use the desktop app.
The wrong tab or window was recorded
Stop and restart, selecting the intended source in the sharing dialog. For full-screen capture, close or minimize private material first. Browser capture requires an explicit user selection, so review the selection before confirming.

There is no narration
Open the recorder’s audio-device control, choose the correct microphone, and make a short test. Check the operating system’s microphone permission and ensure another application has not disabled or exclusively occupied the device.
Page audio is missing
Confirm that tab or system-audio sharing is enabled for the chosen source. Some source and operating-system combinations expose only microphone audio. If the requirement is critical, test the exact browser and operating system before recording the final demonstration.
The recording stops when the page navigates
This is a known concern when an extension starts capture from a content script. Move recording logic to an offscreen document, as Chrome recommends for capture across navigations, and handle the tab’s ended event.
The desktop app is unavailable
Loom documents its desktop app for Mac and Windows, not Linux or ChromeOS. On those systems, use a supported browser extension or a recorder designed for the platform.

Or skip the browser setup
If you need a still image of a webpage rather than a video recording, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is not a video recorder, but it is useful for documenting a page state, generating visual test artifacts, or putting a current page image into a report.
For example, this cURL request captures Stripe as a WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all parameters. Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookies and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes the features; 1,000 shots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Start with the free ScreenshotNeo account.

- Hosted recording: Loom minimizes setup and provides viewing, editing, and sharing after capture, but your recording follows that service’s hosted workflow.
- Desktop recording: Choose it when one demonstration spans browser windows and other applications, provided you use Mac or Windows.
- Custom capture: Browser APIs provide control over recording and storage, while you remain responsible for permissions, navigation behavior, encoding, uploads, and user support.
- Still documentation: ScreenshotNeo is appropriate for a page image or PDF, not a moving browser session. Its verdict and billing headers help distinguish a clean billed capture from a failed or cached request.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I record a browser without installing an extension?
Yes. A web application or extension can call Chrome’s getDisplayMedia(), but the user must approve the tab, window, or screen in the browser’s permission dialog.
Best Value
Will browser recording capture passwords in another tab?
It can if you select a window or full display containing them. Close or hide sensitive material and choose Current Tab when the demonstration only needs one page.
Is ScreenshotNeo a replacement for a video recorder?
No. ScreenshotNeo creates still screenshots or PDFs. Use Loom, a desktop recorder, or a custom MediaRecorder workflow for motion video.
Can a USB microphone or webcam be used?
Yes. Loom lets you select a connected audio device and supports camera capture; USB hardware is optional when the built-in devices are adequate.
