To collect tax on Stripe payments in WordPress, first identify how customers pay: through a WooCommerce store or a standalone payment form. WooCommerce sites can connect Stripe Tax for automatic calculation and reporting; standalone forms can use a plugin such as WP Simple Pay. You can also apply manually maintained Stripe Tax Rates, but Stripe will not determine which taxes apply when you use them.

WordPress setup Calculation approach What you need to manage
WooCommerce store Connect WooCommerce to Stripe, then add Stripe Tax for WooCommerce for automatic calculation and reporting. Configure Stripe Tax and applicable registrations; check how filing and remittance are handled for your account.
Standalone payment form Use a form plugin such as WP Simple Pay with Stripe Tax for location-based automatic calculation, or choose fixed rates or no tax. Connect Stripe, enable Stripe Tax for automatic calculation, and configure the form to collect customer information such as an address when needed.
Manually maintained Stripe Tax Rates Create rates and apply them to invoices or Checkout sessions. Determine which tax codes and rates apply, and keep the rates current. Stripe does not calculate the relevant taxes when you use Tax Rates.

Taxability and registration obligations depend on where you sell and what you sell. Stripe recommends consulting a qualified accountant about indirect tax requirements, which vary by region: Stripe’s tax guidance.

Set up Stripe Tax with a WooCommerce store

  1. Connect Stripe to WooCommerce. Follow the WooCommerce Stripe extension setup guide. WooCommerce lists supported Stripe countries, current software-version requirements, and HTTPS among its prerequisites; check the guide for the requirements that apply to your site.
  2. Install and configure the Stripe Tax connector. Use Stripe Tax for WooCommerce to connect your store with Stripe Tax for automatic tax calculation and reporting. Stripe describes its WooCommerce Tax app as a Stripe Tax integration: Stripe Marketplace listing.
  3. Configure Stripe Tax and your registrations in Stripe. Set up the jurisdictions where you are registered to collect tax. A Stripe Tax Registration object records registration information in Stripe; it does not register your business with a tax authority. Stripe states: “Stripe doesn’t register on your behalf with the relevant authorities when you create a Tax Registration object.” See the Tax Registration API reference.
  4. Verify orders and reports. Review test or initial orders to confirm the expected tax appears, then check the available reports. The plugin materials describe reporting and filing support, but do not establish that every merchant’s filings and remittances are completed automatically. Confirm who handles those obligations for your setup.

Set up tax on standalone WordPress payment forms

For a payment form that does not use WooCommerce, WP Simple Pay documents tax collection on a per-form basis. Its tax collection guide describes three choices: automatic calculation by customer location through Stripe Tax, fixed tax rates you select, or no tax.

  1. Connect the plugin to Stripe using Stripe Connect. Automatic tax calculation requires the Stripe connection and Stripe Tax activation described in the plugin guide.
  2. Enable Stripe Tax in your Stripe Dashboard. Configure the relevant registrations and settings in Stripe before relying on automatic calculation.
  3. Edit the payment form’s tax option. Choose automatic calculation, fixed rates, or no tax according to your obligations and configuration. For automatic calculation, enable address collection when appropriate and review the form’s amount breakdown so customers can see the tax calculation.
  4. Confirm current plugin and account requirements. Plugin features and plan availability can change; verify that your current WP Simple Pay plan and Stripe account support the feature you intend to use.

When to use manual Stripe Tax Rates

Stripe Tax Rates are different from Stripe Tax’s automatic calculation. With rates, you create and maintain the rates yourself, then apply them to invoices or Checkout sessions. Stripe’s help documentation says: “With Tax Rates, Stripe does not calculate relevant taxes for you, and you maintain your log of applicable tax codes and rates.” Read Stripe’s Tax Rates guidance before choosing this approach.

This method is suitable only if you can determine the applicable taxes for each sale and keep the rates and tax codes updated. It does not relieve you of deciding where you need to collect tax or registering with the appropriate authorities.

Registration, filing, and remittance are separate responsibilities

Stripe Tax can calculate tax when configured, but it does not make the legal decision about whether your business must collect tax in a jurisdiction, nor does a Stripe registration object complete government registration for you. Your configuration should reflect actual registrations, and you should establish whether you or a separate filing partner is responsible for filing returns and remitting collected tax. The available plugin and Stripe descriptions do not show that filing and remittance are automatically completed for every merchant.

Check these items before accepting live payments

  • Confirm whether checkout runs through WooCommerce or a standalone form; the connection and plugin steps differ.
  • Check that your product tax treatment and the customer information requested at checkout support the calculation you need.
  • Ensure Stripe Tax settings and registration details match your actual tax registrations.
  • Place a test or initial order and check the displayed tax, order record, and available reports.
  • Identify who is responsible for returns and remittance, rather than assuming the integration handles them.
  • Recheck current plugin compatibility, plan requirements, fees, availability, and supported jurisdictions in the official product documentation.

Stripe’s 2021 launch announcement described coverage of over 30 countries and all US states at launch, but that is historical information, not a current coverage total: Stripe’s June 10, 2021 announcement. Check current Stripe documentation for present availability in your jurisdiction.
