If it does not, check operating-system permissions, security software, graphics drivers, and—on Snagit 2021 or older for Windows—a damaged DataStore. The steps below identify the failure point before you change settings or files.
1. Identify exactly where capture fails
- Open Snagit’s Capture window.
- Click the on-screen Capture button and select a small region.
- Note what happens: no response, a blank image, or a capture that never reaches Editor.
Snagit can start from the Capture window, a preset hotkey, or OneClick. A successful button capture proves the capture engine works; concentrate on the shortcut or OneClick path. If the button also fails, continue with the operating-system and application checks below.
2. Windows: fix Print Screen and other hotkey conflicts
Print Screen is Snagit’s default global capture key on Windows. Windows 11 may assign it to Snipping Tool, while OneDrive or Dropbox can register the key first. A laptop may also require Fn.
Change Snagit’s hotkey
- Open Snagit Capture.
- Choose File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys.
- Assign a shortcut that another application is not using.
- Enable Allow Snagit to override other hotkey assignments when you want Snagit to own that key.
- Test the new shortcut, then test the Capture button again.
If Print Screen still launches another tool, disable that tool’s shortcut or leave Snagit on the alternative combination. Do not remove Windows components; changing the shortcut is safer and reversible.

Check keyboard-specific causes
- Press Fn+Print Screen on keyboards that place Print Screen behind a function layer.
- Try an external keyboard to rule out a faulty key.
- Close utilities that remap keys, record macros, or provide gaming overlays.
- Restart Snagit after changing a hotkey so its global listener is registered again.
3. Mac: restore Snagit’s recording permissions
macOS requires permission for Snagit to capture, edit, and share images and videos. Without Screen Recording and related permissions, Snagit can open normally but produce no image or an incomplete result.
- Open Snagit.
- Choose Snagit > Settings > Capture.
- Select Fix Capture Permissions.
- When macOS opens System Settings, enable every permission Snagit requests, including Screen Recording where shown.
- Return to Snagit and choose Quit & Reopen if prompted. Otherwise quit Snagit completely and reopen it yourself.
- Capture a small region to verify the permission change.
macOS permission changes may not apply to an already-running process. Reopening Snagit is therefore part of the fix, not an optional cleanup step. If Snagit is listed more than once in a permission panel, enable the current app entry and reopen it.
4. Look for software that blocks capture
TechSmith identifies system permissions and conflicts with other applications as common causes. Security products with anti-keylogger or screen-protection features can intercept global shortcuts or prevent screen reads.
Test without the suspected blocker
- Save your work and note the security product’s current settings.
- Temporarily pause only the screen-protection, anti-keylogger, or application-control feature—not your entire security posture unless your administrator approves.
- Restart Snagit and test the Capture button first, then the shortcut.
- Re-enable protection immediately after the test.
If capture works only while a protection feature is paused, add Snagit as an approved application using your security vendor’s documented procedure or ask your administrator. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent workaround.

Close competing utilities
Exit clipboard managers, remote-access tools, screen recorders, overlay software, and cloud-drive screenshot helpers one at a time. Retest after each change so you can identify the conflict instead of disabling several programs indefinitely.
5. Update graphics drivers and check recording-related hardware
A stale Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD driver can cause a blank capture, visual corruption, or recording instability. Obtain the driver from your computer manufacturer’s support site or through Windows Update; avoid unverified driver packages.
- Install the recommended graphics-driver update for your exact computer model.
- Restart Windows.
- Test a window, a region, and (if needed) a full-screen capture.
For video-capture problems, TechSmith also points to webcam initialization, audio devices, hardware-accelerated recording, video quality, and overall system performance. Disconnect a problematic webcam or audio device temporarily, close GPU-heavy applications, and test with a simpler recording configuration before changing multiple settings at once.
6. Blank image or missing capture in Editor on Snagit 2021 and older (Windows)
Use this DataStore procedure only when you are running Snagit 2021 or an older Windows release covered by TechSmith’s guidance. The DataStore contains prior captures, so make a backup first. Newer versions may use different storage behavior; do not apply this reset blindly.
Back up and rebuild DataStore
- Close Snagit, Snagit Editor, and all Snagit processes in Task Manager.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%LocalAppData%TechSmithSnagitDataStorein the address bar. - Copy the entire DataStore folder to a safe location.
- Rename the original folder (for example,
DataStore-old) or remove it only after the backup is verified. - Open Snagit again. It creates a clean DataStore folder.
- Capture a test image and confirm that it appears in Editor.
Your previous captures remain in the backup. Open the saved SNAG files individually when you need to recover them. If rebuilding does not help, close Snagit and restore the backed-up folder, then investigate permissions, drivers, and software conflicts instead of repeatedly deleting data.
7. Match the symptom to the quickest fix

8. A controlled troubleshooting order
Use this order to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Test the Capture button.
- If it works, change the hotkey and close competing shortcut utilities.
- If it fails, repair macOS permissions or review Windows security and driver issues.
- For older Windows versions with a blank or missing Editor image, back up and rebuild DataStore.
- Retest after each change with the same small region, then test a window and full screen.
Record your Snagit version and operating system before contacting support. The Snagit 2025 hotkey instructions may look different in earlier releases, and the DataStore reset is specifically documented for Snagit 2021 and older.
