If Edge does not offer a PNG choice, Windows Snipping Tool is the documented fallback: press Windows+Shift+S, make the snip, then use Save as Image and select PNG if your version presents that option.
Save an Edge screenshot as PNG
- Open the content. In Edge, go to the webpage or PDF page you need to save.
- Open Screenshot. On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also open the page’s context menu or Edge’s Settings and more menu and choose Screenshot when it is available. Older Edge documentation and menus may call this feature Web Capture.
- Make the capture. Follow the on-screen capture controls to select the web or PDF content. Edge documents annotation with inking tools and visual image search as part of this feature.
- Save the image. In the save interface, look for a format or file-type selector. Select PNG only if it is listed, choose a folder and filename, and save.
- Verify the result. Check the filename extension in File Explorer. A file ending in
.pngis the practical confirmation that the saved copy is PNG. If Edge offers only another format, do not rename the extension; use the Snipping Tool method below instead.
Microsoft’s published Edge policy describes Screenshot/Web Capture as capturing web and PDF content and annotating captures. It does not specify a universal save-dialog format list, so the exact PNG option can differ by Edge build, operating-system version, or managed-device configuration.
Use Snipping Tool when Edge does not show PNG
Snipping Tool is the more predictable Windows route when you need a selected screen area, a whole window, or the entire display rather than a browser-integrated capture.

- Press Windows+Shift+S. The Snipping Tool overlay opens.
- Choose the mode that matches the job: Rectangular, Window, Full-screen, or Freeform.
- Capture the Edge page, PDF, window, or screen area.
- Open the captured snip in Snipping Tool if it is not already open. Windows automatically saves captured snips to the Screenshots folder.
- Select Save as Image, choose a location and filename, and select PNG if a file-type selector is shown in your version.
- Reopen the saved file or inspect its properties to verify the
.pngextension.
The automatic Screenshots-folder copy and the additional Save as Image copy are separate practical outcomes. Use the latter when you need a specific filename, folder, or format.

Neither Microsoft’s Edge documentation nor the cited Snipping Tool documentation establishes a universal image-quality comparison or guarantees a particular full-page capture behavior. Choose based on capture scope and whether the format selector actually offers PNG.
Why Screenshot may be missing in Edge
Version and platform
Microsoft’s policy support matrix lists Screenshot/Web Capture for Windows and macOS beginning with Edge version 87. It lists Android and iOS as unsupported for that policy-controlled feature. This is a policy matrix, not a promise that every current build has identical menus.

Organization policy
On a managed computer, the WebCaptureEnabled policy can disable browser access to the feature. Microsoft also documents a separate DisableScreenshots policy for keyboard-shortcut or extension-API screenshot capture; Web Capture may still be available through Edge or another method even when that policy is enabled. If the command, context-menu item, and Settings and more item are all absent, ask your administrator whether policy is responsible.

Wrong command
Ctrl+P on Windows and Command+P on macOS open Edge’s print dialog. Printing is not the documented image-screenshot save workflow. Use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows, or use the menu entry when available.
Mac instructions and limitations
Microsoft lists Edge Screenshot/Web Capture support on macOS beginning with version 87. No current official Microsoft documentation cited here specifies a Mac-specific keyboard shortcut or a guaranteed PNG export sequence. On a Mac, open Edge’s available Screenshot/Web Capture command from its menus, make the capture, and inspect the save dialog before choosing PNG. If PNG is not offered, use the macOS screenshot utility or an image editor that can export PNG; those alternatives are outside the cited Edge workflow.

How to handle full-page, PDF, and long captures
Web pages
Use Edge Screenshot when you want the browser’s own web-content capture and any available annotation tools. The documented material does not specify whether every Edge release provides a full-page control or how lazy-loaded content is handled, so check the controls shown in your installation rather than assuming a page-length result.
PDF files
Edge Screenshot is documented for PDF content as well as webpages. Open the PDF in Edge, invoke Screenshot, select the required page content, and verify the resulting file type. For a multi-page document intended for printing, Edge’s print dialog may be more appropriate, but it creates print output rather than the cited PNG screenshot workflow.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm you are on Windows and using Ctrl+Shift+S, not the print shortcut.
- Try the context menu and Settings and more menu.
- Update Edge if your organization permits updates.
- On a managed device, ask whether
WebCaptureEnabledorDisableScreenshotspolicies are affecting access.
There is no PNG option
- Do not assume renaming a JPEG, WebP, or another file to
.pngconverts it. - Use Snipping Tool and select PNG if its Save as Image dialog offers it.
- Otherwise, open the captured image in an editor that supports PNG export.
The capture is the wrong area
- For a browser-content capture, return to Edge Screenshot and follow its on-screen selection controls.
- For a precise region, window, full-screen, or freeform selection, use the corresponding Snipping Tool mode.
The saved file cannot be opened
- Check that the capture finished before closing the save dialog.
- Inspect the extension and file size; an incorrectly renamed file is not a format conversion.
- Capture again and save to a local folder with a simple filename.
A PDF capture is incomplete
Edge documents PDF capture, but the reviewed material does not define a universal multi-page or full-document behavior. Capture the required page or region explicitly, or use a PDF-focused workflow when you need print-ready pages.
