The quickest way to save a still from a YouTube video is to pause the video at the right moment, move one frame at a time with YouTube’s keyboard shortcuts, and use your computer’s built-in screenshot tool. You do not need to download the whole video.
Use YouTube’s player and your computer’s screenshot tool
This method is free and works for a one-off image on a desktop browser. It captures what is visible on your screen, so the result can include player controls, a cursor, or other selected screen content unless you time the capture and crop it carefully.
- Open the video. Load the YouTube video in a desktop browser and click inside the player. In YouTube’s newer computer experience, keyboard shortcuts may not respond until the player has focus.
- Pause near the target moment. Press K to pause or play, or use the player’s pause button.
- Refine the frame. With playback paused, press . (period) to advance one frame. Press , (comma) to move back one frame. Repeat either key until the still image looks right.
- Make the player as large as practical. Select the player’s full-screen control, or press F after clicking the player. Full-screen enlarges the video but does not guarantee that controls will be absent from the capture.
- Capture the screen. Use your operating system’s screenshot or screen-recording shortcut and select only the player when your tool allows it. Save the image in the format offered by your device, then crop unwanted borders or controls.
YouTube’s official shortcut guidance confirms K for play/pause, period for one-frame forward movement, comma for one-frame reverse movement, and F for full screen: YouTube keyboard shortcuts.
Windows
Press Windows key + Shift + S, choose rectangular snip, and drag around the player. Select the notification to edit or save the image. A full-screen screenshot key may capture more than the video.

ChromeOS
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, then choose a partial or full-screen capture. The Show windows key is the rectangle-with-lines key in the top row.
Linux
Use your desktop environment’s screenshot utility. Common environments provide a Print Screen key or a screenshot application with area selection; the exact shortcut depends on the distribution and desktop.
How to avoid controls and low-quality captures
- Move the pointer away from the player before capturing.
- Wait briefly after pausing so the control overlay fades, then capture without moving the pointer over the video.
- Use the largest player size available. Your final pixel dimensions depend on the source video, browser, display scaling, and capture method; there is no universal YouTube screenshot resolution.
- Use an area-selection capture rather than photographing the entire desktop.
- Crop only after saving the original capture so you can re-edit it if needed.
- If the video is embedded on another website, the embed may not offer a full-screen button. YouTube documents this limitation in its full-screen help.
Use a browser extension for direct frame exports
A frame-capture extension can be more convenient when you need many stills or want a PNG produced from the player rather than a screen-region capture. This is optional third-party software, not a YouTube feature or endorsement.
YouTubeScreenShot
The Chrome Web Store listing for YouTubeScreenShot describes a camera button that downloads the current frame as a PNG and controls for moving around nearby frames. The Chrome Web Store listing listed version 1.3.3 and an August 10, 2026 update date; store metadata can change. Review the current listing at installation time: YouTubeScreenShot listing.
FrameKeeper
The publisher page for FrameKeeper describes in-browser capture on supported YouTube and Bilibili pages, local processing, and JPEG, PNG, or WebP export: FrameKeeper. Its publisher also identifies DRM or protected playback, cross-origin iframes, and player changes as possible limits. Check the current official store listing, supported browsers, permissions, privacy information, and update history before installing.

Which approach should you choose?
| Approach | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in screenshot | One or occasional images | No installation; works with ordinary desktop tools | May include controls, cursor, or surrounding content; requires cropping |
| Frame-capture extension | Repeated captures or direct image export | Can add a player button and save a frame as an image | Third-party permissions, privacy, browser support, and compatibility vary |
Neither method is universally best. Choose the built-in workflow when setup and permissions matter most; consider an extension when repeated frame exports justify the additional software.
Troubleshooting
The period or comma key does nothing
Click inside the video first, confirm playback is paused, and try the key again. Other browser focus targets, such as the address bar or a chat box, can receive the keystroke instead.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Return focus to the player by clicking the video. If an extension or accessibility utility remaps keyboard input, temporarily disable it or use the player controls.
The controls are visible in the screenshot
Move the pointer away, wait for the overlay to disappear, and capture a selected region. Full-screen increases the player size but does not guarantee a control-free image.
Full screen is unavailable
An embedded player may omit the full-screen option. If you control the page, open the original YouTube watch page; otherwise capture the largest embedded player area available.
The extension cannot capture the video
Protected playback, DRM, cross-origin embedding, a changed player interface, unsupported browser versions, or restrictive permissions can prevent capture. Check the extension’s current documentation and store listing. Do not bypass access controls.

The image looks soft
A screenshot cannot contain more detail than the displayed video and your display scaling provide. Enlarge the player before capture and avoid repeatedly resizing a compressed image. The source video’s quality and the browser’s rendering determine the result.
Privacy, permissions, and reuse considerations
For a one-off capture, the built-in screenshot route avoids granting a browser extension access to pages. If you install an extension, inspect the permissions it requests, its privacy statement, supported browsers, publisher identity, and recent update history. Store descriptions are publisher disclosures, not independent testing.
Saving a frame does not by itself grant permission to republish copyrighted video imagery. If you plan to publish, sell, or use the image commercially, determine what permission or exception applies in your jurisdiction and for that video.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a web page from one request, so it is useful for archiving or documenting a YouTube watch page when a page screenshot—not a direct decoded video frame—is what you need. It does not replace the frame-by-frame player method above.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its capture can accept a cookie or consent banner before the shot and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Every plan includes the features: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

FAQ
Can I take a screenshot without downloading the YouTube video?
Yes. Pause the online player, choose the frame, and capture the visible player with your operating system.
Can I save a YouTube frame as a PNG?
Your operating system may save a screenshot in a different format or let you choose one. The YouTubeScreenShot listing specifically describes PNG frame downloads.
Will a screenshot always show the exact original frame?
Not necessarily. Display scaling, browser rendering, timing, overlays, and capture software affect the result. The period and comma shortcuts let you select adjacent frames while paused.
Does ScreenshotNeo extract a video frame?
No. Its API takes a screenshot of a web page. Use the YouTube player workflow or a compatible frame-capture extension when you need the decoded video frame itself.
