When you stop, Snagit opens the recording in Snagit Editor, where you can trim clips, combine segments, annotate, export MP4 or GIF, and share the result.
This guide covers the complete workflow on Windows, recording your screen and webcam together, capturing computer sound, recording permitted online material, fixing lag and audio problems, and choosing the right output and sharing method.
What Snagit can capture
Snagit records what is displayed on your screen and what your selected audio devices provide. You can choose among three capture areas:
- Region: drag around a specific part of the desktop, application, browser page, or presentation.
- Window: select one application window. This is useful for software demonstrations because unrelated desktop content stays out of the recording.
- Entire screen: record one complete display. Use this when a workflow moves between windows or monitors.
Video can include microphone audio, system audio, or both. A webcam can appear as picture-in-picture, and Snagit supports an external camera. Snagit is designed for instructional videos and walkthroughs rather than full multitrack production: it provides quick trimming, clip combining, live screen drawing, MP4 export, GIF creation, and share links.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily record quick videos of your screen and camera that offer the same connection as a meeting without the calendar wrangling
- Draw on your screen as you record video with customizable arrows, squares, and step numbers to emphasize important information
- Provide clear feedback and explain complex concepts with easy-to-use professional mark-up tools and templates
- Instantly create a shareable link where your viewers can leave comments and annotations or upload directly to the apps you use every day
- Version Note: This listing is for Snagit 2024. Please note that official technical support and software updates for this version are scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2026.
Before you record: prepare the screen, audio, and camera
Choose the recording area
Close private windows, notifications, password managers, and unrelated browser tabs. If the demonstration requires several applications, use the full screen; otherwise, a window or tightly cropped region usually keeps the video easier to follow.
Test your microphone
Connect the microphone before opening the capture controls. In the Video tab, select the intended microphone and confirm that its input meter responds to your voice. A USB microphone for screen recording is optional; Snagit can use a built-in microphone or another available input.
Enable system audio when needed
Turn on System Audio when viewers must hear application sounds, a video’s permitted soundtrack, notification tones, or a remote meeting. Select the microphone as well if you need narration and computer sound in the same file. If you only need narration, leaving system audio off reduces unwanted noise.
Position the webcam
Enable the webcam for a presenter bubble, select the correct camera, and position yourself in good light. An external USB webcam for screen recording is optional. If the preview is blank or keeps initializing, disconnect other camera software and test again before recording.

- Open the Snagit Capture window.
- Select the Video tab.
- Choose Region, Window, or Screen, then select the area or display.
- Choose the microphone. Turn on System Audio if computer sound must be included.
- Enable the webcam if you want picture-in-picture, or switch between screen and webcam when that presentation style suits the demonstration.
- Click Record. Perform the walkthrough at a steady pace, pausing briefly after major actions.
- Stop the recording using Snagit’s stop control. The video opens in Snagit Editor.
- Review the timeline. Trim unwanted material, remove false starts, and combine clips when a retake is shorter than re-recording the whole lesson.
- Add live screen drawing during capture or post-capture annotations in Editor. Use arrows, highlights, and text sparingly so they point to the action rather than obscure it.
- Export as MP4 for normal playback or GIF for a short, silent looping demonstration. Share with a Snagit link or a supported destination such as Screencast, Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, or an embedded link where available.
Record your screen and webcam at the same time
In the Video tab, choose the screen area first, then enable the webcam. Snagit places the camera feed over the screen as picture-in-picture. This works well for introductions, software lessons, and commentary because the viewer can see both the presenter and the application.
Rank #2
When to use screen-first recording
Keep the screen as the primary view when the viewer must follow cursor movement, menus, or text. Resize or reposition the webcam bubble so it does not cover controls, subtitles, or an important result.
When to switch to webcam-first
Switch attention to the webcam for a greeting, explanation, or closing statement, then return to the screen for the procedure. Rehearse the transition so you do not narrate while changing layouts.
Reduce webcam-related load
A camera adds processing work. If the recording stutters, disable the webcam and make a short test. If the screen recording becomes smooth, record the screen and presenter separately or use a lower video-quality setting.
Recommended Free Tools
Record microphone and computer audio together
For narration over an application demonstration, select your microphone and enable System Audio. Speak at a consistent distance from the microphone and turn off unnecessary notifications before pressing Record.
Microphone-only recordings
Use microphone-only mode for narrated tutorials, voice-over explanations, or silent software demonstrations. This avoids capturing music, message alerts, or browser audio.
Rank #3
System-audio-only recordings
Use system audio without a microphone when the application’s sound is the subject, such as a permitted product demo or game-sound example. Check the resulting level in Editor before exporting.
Prevent echo
Use headphones when system audio is being recorded with a microphone. Speakers can feed the computer sound back into the microphone and create a delayed echo. Also close conferencing applications that may be using the same microphone.

Can Snagit record a YouTube video?
Snagit can record content that is displayed on your screen when the site and content permit capture, but recording ability is not permission to copy or redistribute someone else’s video. Check the creator’s licence, your organization’s policy, and the service’s terms before recording.
Some sites and media solutions may adhere to HDCP protocols to prevent the unauthorized recording of protected content. A protected stream may produce a blank or black capture, an error, or no usable video. Snagit does not provide a legitimate method to bypass HDCP or other access controls. Use an official download, licensed copy, or permission-based workflow instead.
Choose the right capture and output settings
| Need | Recommended choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Software walkthrough | Window or region, microphone, optional webcam | Keeps attention on the application while preserving narration. |
| Workflow across applications | Entire screen | Prevents missed steps when focus changes between windows. |
| Application sound plus narration | Microphone and System Audio | Includes both voice and computer output. |
| Short looping tip | GIF | Convenient for brief, silent demonstrations. |
| Normal tutorial or presentation | MP4 | Better suited to playback, sharing, and longer clips. |
| More complex editing | Export or continue in Camtasia Editor | A fuller multitrack editor is more appropriate than Snagit’s quick-edit workflow. |
Snagit 2025 release notes describe annual individual and business subscriptions, background-noise removal, customizable share links, webcam virtual backgrounds, and screen-draw updates. A TechSmith store snapshot accessed September 29, 2026 showed a Snagit-in-Camtasia bundle starting at $39.00 per user per year billed yearly; this is a volatile offer, not a guaranteed current price, so verify the store before purchasing.

Why Snagit recordings lag or drop frames
Test the hardware and recording settings before changing your workflow. Common symptoms include out-of-sync video, dropped frames, poor performance, distorted audio, encoding errors, and a blank or initializing preview.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the computer requirements
Current Windows guidance calls for an Intel 8th-generation-or-newer or AMD Ryzen 2000-series-or-newer processor for video recording, 8 GB of RAM recommended, and 1.6 GB of disk space for installation. Recording also needs additional working space for the video file, so keep free storage available.
Lower the processing load
- Record a smaller region or one window instead of the entire screen.
- Close high-CPU applications, browser tabs, virtual machines, and video calls.
- Disable the webcam and make a test recording.
- Lower the video-quality setting if high-quality capture is not essential.
- Disable hardware-accelerated recording when appropriate and test again.
Fix audio initialization and distortion
Confirm that the microphone is connected before opening Snagit, select the intended input, and close other programs that have exclusive control of it. If system audio is missing, verify that System Audio is enabled and that the computer is outputting sound to the expected device. If audio drifts out of sync, make a short test, restart Snagit, and reduce system load before recording the full lesson.
Fix a blank or initializing preview
Wait briefly, then stop and restart the capture. Reconnect the webcam, close competing camera applications, and try screen-only recording. A protected media surface can also appear blank because of HDCP or another service restriction.
Fix encoding errors
Ensure that the destination drive has free space, close background applications, and retry with a shorter or lower-quality capture. If only one source fails, test a different window or a local demonstration to distinguish a source restriction from a Snagit configuration problem.

Performance and reliability checklist
- Restart the computer before a long training session.
- Use a wired or reliable audio connection where possible.
- Record a 20–30 second test and play it back with headphones.
- Check voice clarity, system-audio level, webcam framing, cursor visibility, and synchronization.
- Keep the source application at a stable size; avoid moving or resizing the capture area during recording.
- Save or export promptly after editing and retain the original project until the final MP4 is verified.

Frequently asked questions
Can I capture only one element on a page?
Snagit captures a region or window. For an automated webpage element selected by CSS, ScreenshotNeo provides selector-based capture.
Can I make a recording into a GIF?
Yes. Review and trim the clip in Snagit Editor, then export it as a GIF for a short looping demonstration.
Does Snagit guarantee that every website can be recorded?
No. Display restrictions such as HDCP can prevent capture, and permission to view content does not automatically grant permission to copy it.
