If your screenshot file is truly 0 bytes, the capture data was not successfully written to that file. Recreate the capture and check the save destination; an image that has a nonzero file size but looks blank is a different problem. The right fix depends on whether you captured the screen manually or with automation, and on which operating system and tool you used.

First, check what “empty” means

Before changing settings, check the file’s size in your file manager or file properties. A filename ending in .png does not, by itself, show that a valid PNG was saved.

  • Exactly 0 bytes: no image bytes were written to that file. Recreate the capture from the screen or page; changing or editing the empty file cannot bring back pixels that were never saved.
  • Nonzero size, but the image looks blank, black, or transparent: this is not the same symptom. The available platform guidance here does not establish a general cause for a visually blank, nonzero file, so do not assume that the fixes for a zero-byte file will resolve it.
  • The file is missing or is not where you expected: check the capture tool’s save location before concluding that the capture failed.
  • The file has a different extension or format: verify the format selected by the capture tool. On some Macs, the selected capture mode can produce HEIF rather than PNG.

Make a fresh test capture and inspect its size and location. That helps distinguish a failed write from a save-location or format mismatch without risking the original file.

Fix a manual screenshot on Windows

Use Snipping Tool’s capture-and-save workflow rather than assuming that pressing Print Screen creates a PNG on disk. Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 guidance says that a snip appears in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it. Print Screen may copy the image to the clipboard instead of saving a file directly.

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S and make a new snip.
  2. Open the resulting notification or the capture in Snipping Tool.
  3. In the Snipping Tool window, choose Save Snip, select a destination, and save the image.
  4. Check the saved file’s size and confirm that the selected filename and destination are the ones you intended.

If you used Print Screen, check whether the image is on the clipboard. Paste it into an image-capable app and save it from there. A clipboard capture and a saved image file are different outputs; seeing a screenshot copied does not prove that a PNG file was written.

If Snipping Tool produces a nonzero file that still looks blank, note that separately from a 0-byte result. The steps above confirm the save workflow, but do not diagnose every possible rendering or display issue.

Fix a manual screenshot on Mac

On Mac, verify both the screenshot destination and the format you expect. Apple’s current Mac screenshot guidance identifies the Desktop as the default save location, while allowing the location to be changed in Screenshot’s Options.

  1. Press Shift + Command + 3 for a full-screen capture, or Shift + Command + 5 to open Screenshot.
  2. In Screenshot, open Options and check the selected save location.
  3. Save or capture a new image, then look in that location and inspect the resulting file size.
  4. If the capture is not PNG, check the selected capture mode and the format of the resulting file rather than relying on the name you expected.

For supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple documents SDR screenshots as PNG and HDR screenshots as HEIF. Therefore, a screenshot made in HDR may not match an expectation that every capture will be a PNG. Availability depends on the Mac model and macOS version. Apple also notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be captured; inability to capture a particular app is distinct from a zero-byte save.

Check the destination before retrying repeatedly

When a capture appears to fail, save a new test image to a simple local destination that you can write to. Confirm the exact path, available space, and write access. These are checks, not proof that storage capacity or permissions caused your particular screenshot to be empty. Apple’s general guidance for moving or copying files identifies destination capacity and permissions as possible issues, but that guidance does not diagnose a screenshot-specific failure.

  • Wrong location: use the capture tool’s save or Options setting to identify the actual destination; check there rather than searching only the folder you expected.
  • Write access: try a destination where your account can save an ordinary file. If that works, compare its permissions with those of the original destination.
  • Available space: check that the destination has room and retry only after you have a suitable writable location.
  • Unclear result: use a distinct filename for each test and check the new file’s properties. This avoids confusing an old empty file with a successful retry.

Diagnose a screenshot created by code or browser automation

In scripted capture, the filename is only the last step. Check the stages independently: whether capture is supported, whether the capture session started, whether a frame arrived, whether its width and height are nonzero, whether encoding completed, and whether the output was written to the path your next step reads.

Windows application capture

Microsoft’s Windows.Graphics.Capture guidance describes checking whether capture is supported, starting a capture session, receiving a frame, and saving that frame as a PNG. Use that sequence to locate the failed stage instead of treating an empty output file as an encoder diagnosis.

  1. Confirm that the capture operation is supported in the environment where the app is running.
  2. Confirm that the capture session starts and that your frame-receive step actually obtains a frame.
  3. Inspect the frame’s dimensions. Do not attempt to encode or save a frame with zero width or height.
  4. Complete the PNG encoding and file-write steps, and handle their completion or failure before reporting success.
  5. Check the final path written by the capture code and the path used by the code that opens or processes the result.

Microsoft also warns that areas outside a frame’s content size may contain undefined data. Use the frame’s content size when determining which region contains valid captured content; do not assume that every area in a larger surface contains meaningful image pixels.

Browser automation and zero-sized captures

A Mozilla Bugzilla WebDriver report documents a specific case in which a screenshot with zero width or zero height resulted in an invalid 0-byte image. Treat this as a known edge case in that reported context, not as a universal explanation for empty PNGs. Check the browser, driver, and versions involved before deciding the report matches your setup.

  • Log or inspect the viewport and window dimensions immediately before capture.
  • Ensure the page has produced a real rendered frame before requesting the screenshot.
  • Check that the automation step reached the screenshot operation and that your code awaited or otherwise completed the output write before the next step reads the file.
  • Verify the output path used by the capture step, especially if another process moves or consumes the file.

If the dimensions are zero, correct the window or viewport setup and retry after a rendered frame is available. If dimensions are nonzero but the output is still 0 bytes, continue through the encoder and file-write checks; the Bugzilla case alone does not identify the cause in another automation stack.

Or skip the browser setup

If the image you need is a screenshot of a website, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request. This produces a fresh website capture; it does not recover pixels from an existing empty local screenshot. Its response identifies page outcomes and billing status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. For example, this cURL request captures a page to a WebP file; replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed:

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Renaming the empty file: changing the extension does not create image data. Make a new capture and save it successfully.
  • Assuming every screenshot shortcut saves a file: some workflows place the capture on the clipboard or open it for editing. Complete the save step in the relevant tool.
  • Assuming a PNG extension guarantees PNG output: verify the saved format, particularly when capturing HDR content on a supported Mac.
  • Changing permissions or buying storage without checking: first verify the actual destination, write access, and available space. These are possible checks, not established causes in every case.
  • Blaming a browser driver based on one report: compare the reported zero-dimension condition with your viewport, browser, and driver before applying it to another system.
  • Treating a nonzero blank image as a zero-byte file: record the actual file size and follow the diagnostic branch that matches what you see.

A quick decision path

  1. Check the size. If it is 0 bytes, create a fresh capture. If it is nonzero, the file is not the zero-byte case addressed here.
  2. Identify the capture method. For a manual capture, use the operating system’s capture tool and save flow. For code, inspect capture, dimensions, encoding, write completion, and output path.
  3. Verify destination and format. Check where the tool saves, whether the destination is writable and has space, and whether the saved format is actually PNG.
  4. For automation, validate the frame. Confirm that capture is supported and dimensions are nonzero before writing the output.
  5. Retry and inspect the new file. Check the result’s size and location rather than relying only on a success message or the filename extension.
