On a computer, open the video, click the player, seek near the moment you need, pause, then press . to advance one frame or , to go back one frame. Capture the player with your operating system or browser screenshot tool. Selecting only the player and waiting for controls to disappear gives you a cleaner image than capturing the whole page.
What you need to capture a YouTube frame
You need a computer with the video open in a browser and a way to save a screen region. YouTube’s frame-stepping shortcuts work only after the player has keyboard focus: click inside the video first. The procedure below saves what is visible on your screen, so the result can include controls, browser chrome, subtitles, or other page content unless you crop or select the player area.
- A YouTube video opened in a desktop browser.
- A keyboard, so you can use YouTube’s single-frame controls.
- A system or browser screenshot feature. Windows, macOS, Linux desktop environments and modern browsers generally provide one, although the command and output vary.
Method 1: Use YouTube’s frame-by-frame controls and a screenshot
- Open the video and focus the player. Click somewhere inside the video image. If the page scrolls or a browser shortcut is triggered instead, click the player again.
- Move close to the target. Drag the seek bar to an approximate position. With the seek bar active, YouTube’s documented left and right arrow controls move in five-second increments. Number keys can jump to approximate portions of the video, which is useful for a long recording.
- Pause. Press
kwhile the player is focused, or click the pause button. The video must be paused before frame stepping works. - Adjust one frame at a time. Press
.(period) to move forward one frame. Press,(comma) to move backward one frame. Repeat either key until the exact image is displayed. Holding a key may advance through several frames; use individual presses when accuracy matters. - Hide temporary controls. Move the pointer outside the player and wait for the playback controls to fade. If you need subtitles, leave them enabled; otherwise turn them off before capturing.
- Capture only the player. Use your operating system’s region-selection screenshot mode and drag around the video image. A region capture avoids the address bar, recommendations and comments.
- Save and inspect the file. Open the saved image at 100% and check that it is the intended frame, that no controls cover it and that subtitles or watermarks are acceptable.
YouTube’s official shortcut table describes the period key as “skip to the next frame” while paused and the comma key as going back one frame. The same table lists k for play or pause. Shortcut labels and player behavior can change with YouTube’s interface, so click the player again if a key appears not to work.
Capturing in Microsoft Edge
In Edge, Ctrl+Shift+S opens the browser’s Screenshot tool. Pause the video first, choose the area or region option, and select the player. Microsoft’s documentation describes using this tool to capture moving content such as video after it has been paused. The result is still a screenshot of the rendered page, not a promise of the video’s original file resolution.

Other operating-system capture paths
- Windows: Use Snipping Tool’s rectangular snip and select the player. The exact shortcut can depend on Windows configuration.
- macOS: Use the built-in screenshot toolbar and choose a selected portion, then drag around the player.
- Linux: Use your desktop environment’s region screenshot command or utility. Select the video rectangle rather than the full display.
Do not resize the player after finding the frame. Enlarging it can make the screenshot softer; shrinking it can discard detail. A screenshot also cannot recover detail that is absent from the video stream or obscured by compression, motion blur, a watermark or subtitles.
Method 2: Install a YouTube frame-capture extension
A dedicated browser extension can add a capture button inside or beside the YouTube player, then save or copy the displayed frame. One Chrome Web Store listing for “Screenshot for YouTube — Video Frame Capture” advertises PNG and JPEG output, clipboard copying and local processing. Those are statements from the extension’s developer, not an independent audit or test of every browser and video.
- Open the extension’s current Chrome Web Store listing and verify the publisher, permissions, update date and supported browsers.
- Install it only if the requested permissions make sense for your use. A tool that needs access to every page deserves more scrutiny than one limited to YouTube.
- Open the video, click the player, pause and use
.or,to reach the exact frame. - Use the extension’s capture button, then confirm whether it saves a PNG, JPEG or clipboard image and where the file went.
- Test one non-sensitive video before relying on it for a production workflow.
An extension may be more convenient than region selection, but it does not automatically produce a native-resolution frame. Check the dimensions and sharpness of the resulting file. Review the listing’s current privacy disclosure rather than assuming that a “local processing” statement is an independent privacy certification.
Method 3: Try an online frame-grabber cautiously
Some websites describe a workflow in which you paste a YouTube URL, choose a point in the video and download a still. This can be convenient when you cannot install software, but the current compatibility, processing behavior and privacy terms of a particular service must be checked on that service’s own site. A service-authored guide is not independent verification that its tool still supports every YouTube video.

- Read the service’s current terms and privacy policy before submitting a URL, especially for private, unlisted or confidential material.
- Use a public video for an initial test and avoid signing in or uploading a copy of a video unless the service explicitly requires it and you accept the implications.
- Paste the watch URL, select the timestamp or preview frame, and download the image if the site offers that function.
- Inspect the downloaded file for the expected frame, dimensions, overlays and any branding.
- Delete the downloaded file and revoke any temporary permissions when you are finished on a shared computer.
An online tool may fail when YouTube changes its player, when a video is age-restricted or region-limited, or when the service cannot access the requested content. If precision matters, YouTube’s own period/comma controls plus a local screenshot provide a more transparent fallback.

For a one-off image, use the first method. Choose an extension when you repeatedly need a capture button and have reviewed its permissions. Use an online service only when its current terms and handling are acceptable for the video involved.

The period or comma key does nothing
Click inside the player, pause, and try again. Browser focus may be in the address bar, a comment box or another control. If a keyboard layout makes the punctuation keys difficult to enter, use the player controls to pause and then try the physical period and comma keys with the player focused.

Seek to a less motion-heavy frame and step one frame at a time. A screenshot cannot remove blur already present in the source video. Maximize the player before seeking, but do not enlarge it after capture; increasing display size does not create missing detail.

Controls or subtitles cover the frame
Move the pointer away and wait for controls to fade. Toggle subtitles off if they are not part of the required image. If controls remain, use a tighter crop around the video image or capture after the player loses focus.
The screenshot includes the whole browser window
Choose a region or selected-area capture rather than full-screen or full-window mode. If your tool cannot select a region, crop the saved image locally and keep the original until you confirm the crop.
An extension cannot capture the video
Check that it is enabled for YouTube, review updated permissions and reload the tab. Test in a normal public video. Browser updates, content-security changes and restricted videos can affect extension behavior.
An online service rejects the URL
The video may be private, age-restricted, region-limited or unavailable to the service. Confirm that the URL works in your browser, then use the local YouTube workflow. Do not submit credentials to an unfamiliar capture site.
