When a Snipping Tool screenshot fails, first identify what failed: opening the capture overlay, taking the image, copying it, or saving and finding the file. Those are separate steps with different fixes. Start with the matching symptom below rather than assuming one setting or repair will solve every problem.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool and clipboard guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but menus and available features can vary by version. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Why is my Snipping Tool not working?
Pinpoint the last thing that worked. If nothing opened, check the shortcut and keyboard assignment. If the snipping overlay opened, make a deliberate capture and check the Snipping Tool window. If the image appeared but will not paste, check clipboard behavior. If it can be pasted but you cannot find a file, check automatic saving and the Screenshots folder.
- Nothing opened: Try Windows logo key + Shift + S. On Windows 11, check whether the Print Screen key is assigned to open screen snipping.
- The overlay opened, but there is no image: Choose a capture mode and select the region or window as needed, then look for the result in the Snipping Tool window.
- The image appeared, but paste fails: Test the clipboard in another app. Clipboard history is a separate feature from copying a snip.
- The image can be pasted, but there is no file: Check the configured Screenshots folder or use Save as to pick a known location.
Microsoft documents these shortcuts and settings, but does not identify one cause that explains every failure. Treat each step as a symptom-based check, not a guaranteed repair.

Why won’t Windows+Shift+S take a screenshot?
Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the image-snipping overlay; it does not, by itself, mean that a file has been saved. If pressing it appears to do nothing, check that you are pressing the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together. If your keyboard has a nonstandard layout or a function layer, check the device’s key behavior as well.
On Windows 11, Print Screen may be configured to open screen snipping. To inspect that assignment, go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Change the setting if the Print Screen behavior is not what you want. The Windows+Shift+S shortcut is a separate route to the overlay. Choose the capture mode that matches the result you need
Snipping Tool offers rectangular, window, full-screen, and freeform captures. After the overlay opens, choose the mode and select the area if the mode requires it. The interface changes slightly to show that a capture is ready. Check the Snipping Tool window for the captured image rather than expecting the shortcut alone to create a named file. Keep a menu open while you capture it
Some menus close when focus changes. Microsoft documents this workflow: open Snipping Tool, open the menu you want to show, press Ctrl + PrtSc, choose a snipping mode, and then select the capture area. This gives you a way to start the capture without first dismissing the menu.

A snip being visible in Snipping Tool, a current clipboard copy, clipboard history, and a saved image file are distinct outcomes. Microsoft says captured snips are copied to the Snipping Tool window. If pasting fails, take a new snip, check the Snipping Tool window, then try pasting into a different application. This helps establish whether the image was captured and whether the destination app is the point of failure.
Clipboard history is optional and separate from the current clipboard. Press Windows logo key + V; if prompted, select Turn on. History is useful for retrieving earlier copied items, but it is not required for an ordinary paste from the current clipboard. Microsoft says clipboard history holds up to 25 entries, clears on restart except pinned items, and has a 4 MB per-item limit. Where did my Snipping Tool screenshot save?
Check both the Snipping Tool window and the folder configured for screenshots. Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and that automatic saving and the default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool under See More > Settings. Because settings and features depend on your Windows version and configuration, do not assume that the folder or auto-save behavior is unchanged on your device.
- Open the Snipping Tool window and inspect the capture.
- In Snipping Tool, open See More > Settings and check the automatic-save option and the configured folder.
- Use the editor’s Save as control to save another copy. Choose a folder you can locate, enter a filename, and confirm the save.
- Open that folder in File Explorer and verify the file appears there.
For a separate full-screen route that saves a file, press Windows logo key + PrtScn. Microsoft says the screenshot is saved in the Pictures > Screenshots folder. This is different from Windows+Shift+S, which starts a snip and should not be treated as proof that a file was saved. Shortcut details are in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts guide.
Check access to the Pictures library only if saving appears blocked
If a setting or save action appears blocked, Windows privacy settings for library access are one conditional check. Microsoft cautions that an app may not work as expected when access to the Pictures library is denied. Its guidance concerns Windows app permissions generally; it does not establish that this is a specific or usual cause of Snipping Tool save failures. How do I take a screenshot if my keyboard has no PrtScn key?
Try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar. Microsoft documents this as an alternative screenshot shortcut for devices without a PrtScn key. Hardware and keyboard behavior can differ, so if the key combination does not work, check the device maker’s keyboard guidance. For a selected region instead of a full-screen shortcut, try Windows logo key + Shift + S.

Do not assume a graphics driver, third-party conflict, or a particular broken installation is responsible; the Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish those causes or a universal reset-and-repair sequence. To narrow the next step, record:
- Your Windows version and whether the device runs Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- The exact shortcut or control you used, and what happened immediately afterward.
- Whether the image appeared in the Snipping Tool window, could be pasted, or appeared in a folder.
- Any visible error and whether the issue occurs with a different capture mode or the full-screen shortcut.
Those details identify whether the next investigation should focus on the keyboard trigger, capture, clipboard, or saving step. Available labels and features can vary with Windows version.
