For most Edge users, start with Edge’s built-in Screenshot tool. It captures an entire webpage or a selected area, lets you mark it up, and can copy or save the result. It can also keep moving page content, such as GIFs and carousels, active during capture. Open it from a page’s right-click menu, from Edge Settings, or with Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft notes that availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version.

Install an add-on when you need a workflow Edge does not provide conveniently—such as webpage-to-PDF conversion, recording, share links, or a specialized annotation process. The extensions below are matches for the capabilities described in their Microsoft Edge Add-ons listings, not hands-on performance rankings.

Quick comparison

Tool Capabilities described by its source Best fit Important qualification
Microsoft Edge Screenshot Full-page or selected-area capture, markup, copy/save, and moving-content capture Most webpage screenshots and basic markup Availability varies by device, market, and browser version
GoFullPage Full webpage capture with image or PDF download; very large pages may be split into separate images; listing describes annotation in a premium editor A direct full-page extension workflow with image/PDF export Features come from listing copy, not independent testing
FireShot Full webpage screenshots and webpage-to-PDF conversion Full-page capture where PDF output is the priority Listing copy does not prove a comparative quality advantage
QwikCapture Area, visible-screen, and full-page shortcuts; PNG saving; annotation; screen recording; shareable links Capture plus recording, annotation, or sharing Listing claims have not been independently verified
CocoShot Screenshot and screen recording, annotation, editing/sharing, full-page capture, and clickable PDF export An all-in-one capture and sharing workflow Listing claims have not been independently verified
Windows Snipping Tool Freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen captures; annotation, save/share, and video snips Desktop, window, region, or screen recording The cited support applies to Windows 10 and 11; some newer functions are Copilot+ PC-only, and it does not establish full-webpage capture equivalent to Edge Screenshot

1. Use Edge Screenshot first

Edge’s native tool is the lowest-friction choice because it is already part of the browser. On a webpage, right-click and choose the screenshot command, or press Ctrl+Shift+S. Select the whole page or drag around an area, then use the markup controls before copying or saving.

When it is enough

  • You need a static image of the complete webpage rather than only the visible viewport.
  • You want to draw, highlight, or otherwise mark up the capture before sharing.
  • You need to preserve animated or moving content while the page is captured.
  • You do not want to grant a third-party extension access to pages.

When to look elsewhere

Choose an add-on when you specifically need a PDF-centric workflow, recording, shareable links, or an editor that is easier for your team’s process. Check that the feature is available in your Edge build; Microsoft says the native tool’s availability and functionality can differ by device, market, and browser version.

2. Pick an add-on by the job

GoFullPage for straightforward full-page exports

GoFullPage’s listing describes a full-webpage capture followed by image or PDF download. It also says exceptionally large pages can be split into separate images and describes annotation in a premium editor. That makes it a candidate when you want a dedicated full-page button and export choices. The listing does not establish speed, reliability, privacy, or image quality compared with other tools.

FireShot when webpage-to-PDF matters most

FireShot emphasizes full-page screenshots and converting webpages to PDF. Select it when the deliverable is a document rather than only a PNG. “Best” here means best aligned with that stated requirement—not a measured ranking.

QwikCapture for capture plus recording and sharing

QwikCapture’s listing describes shortcuts for an area, the visible screen, or a full page, along with PNG saving, annotation, screen recording, and shareable links. It is a logical candidate for tutorials or bug reports that need both a still image and a short video.

CocoShot for an all-in-one editing workflow

CocoShot’s listing describes screenshots, screen recording, annotations, editing and sharing, full-page capture, and clickable PDF export. Consider it when those functions belong in one workflow. The listing is publisher-provided and has not been independently verified here.

3. Use Windows Snipping Tool for the desktop

Snipping Tool is separate from Edge and is useful when the target is a window, application, region, or the entire desktop. Its documented modes include freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen snips, plus annotation, saving, sharing, and video snips. The cited Microsoft support page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; some newer capabilities are limited to Copilot+ PCs. It does not establish a full-webpage capture mode equivalent to Edge Screenshot, so use Edge or an extension for a page that extends beyond the viewport.

4. Installation and permission checks

  1. In Edge, open the Extensions menu and choose Get Extensions for Microsoft Edge.
  2. Search for the add-on, open its listing, and select Get.
  3. Read the permission prompt before selecting the confirmation button.
  4. After installation, open Edge’s extension controls to disable or remove it whenever required.

Edge can also install extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Microsoft documents an option to allow extensions from other stores before installation. Store availability alone does not prove that an extension is safe or privacy-preserving. Inspect the publisher identity, requested permissions, and whether those permissions make sense for the capture workflow. A tool that reads data on every webpage has broader access than one used only for a manually selected region.

5. A practical decision framework

  • Full webpage or visible screen? Use Edge Screenshot or a full-page add-on for a scrolling webpage; use Snipping Tool for a desktop region, window, or screen.
  • Markup or redaction? Start with Edge’s markup. Choose an add-on only if its editor fits your process.
  • Still image or recording? QwikCapture, CocoShot, or Snipping Tool are candidates when video is part of the requirement.
  • Image or PDF? GoFullPage and FireShot describe image/PDF export; CocoShot describes clickable PDF export.
  • Sharing? QwikCapture and CocoShot describe share features, while Edge’s native workflow centers on copying or saving.
  • Permissions? Prefer the least access that can complete the task, and review the prompt every time you install an extension.

6. Or skip the browser setup

If you need automated screenshots in a build, script, CMS, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A minimal cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Options for production captures

ScreenshotNeo documents 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. 7. Troubleshooting captures

The Screenshot command is missing

Check that Edge is current and try the right-click menu, Settings, and Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft cautions that availability varies by device, market, and browser version. If the feature remains unavailable, use an add-on or Snipping Tool according to the capture type.

The result contains only the visible viewport

Choose a full-page mode rather than a visible-area mode. For a very long page, an extension may split the result into multiple images; GoFullPage’s listing specifically describes that behavior for exceptionally large pages.

A page looks different after capture

Dynamic content, consent dialogs, chat widgets, lazy-loaded images, and login state can change what is captured. Dismiss overlays, wait for content to load, and confirm that you are authorized to capture private material. For repeatable automated work, use explicit waits, cookies, headers, and selector-based hiding in ScreenshotNeo.

An extension asks for broad permissions

Stop and read the prompt. Install only if the access is necessary for the stated function; otherwise cancel and choose a narrower workflow such as Edge Screenshot or Snipping Tool. You can disable or remove the extension from Edge’s extension controls.

A PDF is hard to read

Try a PDF-focused workflow such as FireShot or GoFullPage, check the page’s print styling, and consider landscape orientation or page ranges when using an automated PDF capture.

8. Reliability, privacy, and cost considerations

The available listing descriptions do not establish which extension is fastest, most reliable, most private, or best overall. Treat them as feature matches, not tested rankings. Browser extensions may request access to webpage content, so permission review is part of the selection decision. Native Edge Screenshot avoids adding an extension, while Snipping Tool keeps desktop capture outside the browser.

For automated workloads, separate browser setup from capture logic, set timeouts, handle non-200 responses, and record whether a result is an image or PDF. ScreenshotNeo’s verdict and billing headers help distinguish a clean billable capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit.
