Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open Start, search for “Snipping Tool,” and select the app. This is the most dependable way to capture your screen when the Windows key or its shortcuts are unavailable. Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform, select New, then save with Ctrl+S or copy with Ctrl+C.
You can also press PrtSc by itself for a full-screen image copied to the clipboard, although Windows 11 settings may make that key open screen snipping instead.
Method 1: Use Snipping Tool from Start
This method does not use the Windows key at any stage and works with a mouse, touchpad, touchscreen, or another available way to open Start.
- Open Start by clicking the Start button on the taskbar.
- Type Snipping Tool in the search box.
- Select the Snipping Tool app from the results.
- Choose a capture mode: Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select New. Depending on the mode, drag around an area, select a window, or let the tool capture the entire screen.
- When the capture opens in the Snipping Tool window, select the save command or press Ctrl+S. To put the image on the clipboard instead, press Ctrl+C.
Rectangle mode
Drag a box around the exact part of the display you need. This is useful for an error message, a single control, or a cropped portion of a webpage.

Window mode
Select an open window to capture it without manually tracing its edges. If several windows overlap, click the one you want after choosing New.
Full screen mode
Capture the entire display. If you use more than one monitor, check the resulting image before saving so you know which display or desktop arrangement Windows included.
Freeform mode
Draw an irregular outline around the subject. This is useful when a rectangle would include distracting material around an object.
Save the screenshot or copy it to another app
A screenshot can either become a file or remain an image on the clipboard. In Snipping Tool, press Ctrl+S to save the open snip, choose a location and filename, and confirm the file type offered by your Windows installation. Press Ctrl+C to copy it, then open Paint, Word, an email, or another compatible application and paste it.
Copying is not the same as saving: a clipboard image can be replaced when you copy something else, while a saved file remains in the folder you selected. If you need to attach the image later, save it rather than relying only on the clipboard.

Method 2: Press Print Screen by itself
Press PrtSc (also labeled Print Screen or PrtScn) once. Microsoft documents this as a full-screen snapshot copied to the clipboard. Open an image or document app and press Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the pasted image if you need a file.
This one-key method is different from Snipping Tool: it does not ask you to select a rectangle or window, and the documented result is a clipboard copy rather than an automatically named image file.
Why PrtSc may behave differently on Windows 11
On some Windows 11 computers, pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping instead of simply copying the full screen. Windows exposes this behavior under Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. The wording, default, and result can vary by Windows version and by the setting on your PC.
If you need predictable behavior without changing settings, launch Snipping Tool from Start. If the key opens a snipping overlay, complete the selection there; if it copies an image, paste it into your chosen app.
Which method should you use?
| Approach | Input needed | Capture scope | Where the result goes | Settings sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool from Start | Start and mouse, touch, or another available input | Rectangle, window, full screen, or freeform | Opens in Snipping Tool for copying or saving | Low; opening the app avoids relying on a Windows-key shortcut |
| PrtSc alone | A working Print Screen key | Full screen as documented | Clipboard | Higher on Windows 11 because the key may be mapped to screen snipping |
Choose Snipping Tool when you need a particular area, a window capture, editing before saving, or a workflow that avoids keyboard shortcuts entirely. Choose PrtSc when you have a usable key and want a quick full-screen clipboard image.

What if your keyboard has no Windows key?
You do not need to restore the Windows key to use the Start-menu method. Click Start with the mouse or another input method, search for Snipping Tool, and capture normally.
Do not substitute Windows+Shift+S or Windows+PrtScn for this task: both shortcuts require the Windows key. They may be useful on a different keyboard, but they do not satisfy the constraint in this guide.

What if your keyboard has no Print Screen key?
Use Snipping Tool from Start. That route needs no Print Screen key at all. A keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is a narrow accessory option if you specifically need one-key full-screen clipboard capture, but it does not recreate Windows-key shortcuts.
Some compact keyboards place Print Screen behind an Fn layer or share it with another key. Consult that keyboard’s labeling or documentation before assuming the key is missing. If the combination is unreliable, the Start-menu workflow remains the simpler option.
Troubleshooting
Snipping Tool does not appear in search
- Check the spelling and search for Snipping rather than the full name.
- Open Start’s app list and look under S for Snipping Tool.
- If the app is absent or disabled on a managed computer, ask the device administrator; do not install an untrusted screenshot utility merely to replace a built-in tool.
PrtSc appears to do nothing
It may have copied the image silently to the clipboard. Open Paint or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V. If nothing pastes, verify that you pressed the actual Print Screen key, check whether it requires Fn, and try Snipping Tool from Start.

PrtSc opens a snipping overlay instead
That is consistent with the Windows 11 Print Screen setting. Either use the overlay to make the selection or review Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. If you do not want to depend on that setting, open Snipping Tool directly from Start.
The pasted image is not the one you expected
Clipboard contents change whenever another application copies text or an image. Capture again, paste immediately, and save the result with Ctrl+S or the destination app’s save command.
The screenshot includes too much or too little
Use Window mode for a complete application window, Rectangle for a precise box, or Freeform for an irregular subject. Repeating New starts another capture without requiring a Windows-key shortcut.
The capture is blank or a protected area is missing
Some applications restrict screen content or draw it through protected surfaces. Try capturing the application window rather than a selected region, or use the application’s own export or copy function. Snipping Tool cannot override content-protection rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I screenshot without the Windows button?
Click Start, search for Snipping Tool, open it, choose a mode, and select New. You can then save with Ctrl+S or copy with Ctrl+C.
Can I use Print Screen without the Windows key?
Yes. Press PrtSc by itself and paste the clipboard image into Paint or another compatible app. On some Windows 11 systems, the key opens screen snipping instead because of its keyboard setting.
Can I capture only one application window without a Windows-key shortcut?
Yes. Open Snipping Tool from Start, choose Window mode, select New, and click the application window.
The Bottom Line
