The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL has several built-in ways to capture what is on screen. The physical-button shortcut is usually fastest, while the Overview menu and Google Assistant are useful when you would rather not press both buttons. Android 12 and later also support a scrolling capture on most screens that allow scrolling.
The labels and availability described here follow Google’s Pixel Help instructions for Pixel phones and tablets. You can verify the current procedure on Google’s official Pixel screenshot guide.
Use Power and Volume down
- Open the app, photo, message, map, or other screen you want to save.
- Press Power and Volume down simultaneously.
- Release both buttons. The phone saves the image and shows a preview at the bottom left.
The buttons must be pressed together rather than one after the other. If the volume control changes instead of a screenshot being taken, try again with a shorter, simultaneous press.

What happens after capture
The preview is a quick way to open the new image. Tap it if you want to edit or share immediately, or leave it alone and continue using the phone. The saved file remains available in Google Photos even after the preview disappears.
Take a screenshot without the physical buttons
Pixel navigation mode determines which button-free route is available. These options are useful if you are holding the phone in one hand, have difficulty pressing two buttons together, or want an on-screen command.
Gesture navigation
- Swipe up from the bottom edge and hold to open the overview of running apps.
- Select the open app whose current screen you want to capture.
- Tap Screenshot.
This captures the selected app as shown in the overview flow. If the Screenshot control is not visible, make sure you selected an open app rather than dismissing the overview.
Three-button navigation
- Tap Overview to display open apps.
- Select the app you want to capture.
- Tap Screenshot.
The exact navigation buttons depend on the navigation configuration currently enabled on the phone. Google documents this route for three-button navigation; it is separate from the gesture-navigation steps.
Google Assistant voice command
Say “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” Assistant then performs the capture. This is convenient when the screen is visible but your hands are occupied. Voice recognition and Assistant availability can vary with your device settings, language, account, and connection.

Google’s instructions also mention a two-button navigation shortcut for Pixel 3a and earlier. That is not the recommended method for a Pixel 9 Pro XL, so use the Power-plus-Volume-down shortcut or one of the current navigation methods above.
Capture a full or scrolling page
A normal screenshot contains the portion currently visible. To include content below the fold, first take a screenshot with Power + Volume down, then tap Capture more in the screenshot controls.
- Open the scrollable page and position it where the capture should begin.
- Press Power and Volume down together.
- Tap Capture more.
- Drag the crop guides to include the amount of content you need.
- Save or share the resulting image from the screenshot controls.
Google says scrolling screenshots work on Android 12 and later on most screens that allow scrolling. The option is not guaranteed for every app or view. A fixed dialog, a game canvas, a protected screen, or another non-scrollable surface may offer only the ordinary screenshot.
If “Capture more” is missing
- Confirm that the page can actually scroll. Try moving through it before capturing.
- Use the physical-button method first; the scrolling control appears in the resulting screenshot interface.
- Try the same action in another long page, such as a web page or lengthy document, to determine whether the limitation belongs to that screen.
- If the control remains unavailable on a screen that appears scrollable, capture several ordinary screenshots and combine or share them separately.
Do not assume that a missing Capture more control means the phone is defective. Google qualifies the feature as working on most supported, scrollable screens rather than every screen.
Find screenshots in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Choose On this device.
- Open the Screenshots folder.
You can also tap the recent screenshot’s preview immediately after capture. In Photos, open the image to reach the editing and sharing controls. Use the edit control to make adjustments, then save the edited result according to Photos’ prompts. Use the share control to send it to another app or contact.

Keep the original when editing
If the screenshot may be needed as evidence or for later reference, keep the untouched image and create an edited copy when Photos offers that choice. Cropping sensitive notifications, account details, or private messages before sharing reduces accidental disclosure.

Troubleshooting Pixel 9 Pro XL screenshots
The screenshot does not appear
Retry the Power-and-Volume-down shortcut with both buttons pressed together. If you used a navigation method, confirm that an app is selected in the overview before tapping Screenshot. A button pressed too early or too late can perform a different action.

The phone changes the volume instead
The volume change indicates that the two-button timing was not simultaneous. Place your fingers on both controls, press together briefly, and release together. If a case makes either control difficult to press, remove it temporarily to eliminate that variable.
Capture more is not available
That screen may not expose a scrollable surface to Android, or the content may be protected from extended capture. Test a normal web page or document. Google only promises scrolling capture on Android 12 and later and on most screens that allow scrolling.
The screenshot is not in Photos
Use the exact path Collections → On this device → Screenshots. If you just captured it, open the bottom-left preview first. Check that you are viewing the phone’s local device folders rather than a different Photos view.

Assistant does not take the screenshot
Use the physical-button or navigation method instead. Voice capture depends on Assistant recognizing the command and being available with your current device, account, language, and connection settings.

Review the entire image before sending it. Crop out notifications, private conversations, addresses, tokens, or other visible account data in Photos. For a long capture, inspect the lower sections as well as the first screen.
Practical tips for clearer captures
- Scroll to the exact starting position before using Capture more; the resulting image begins from the screen you captured.
- For a single app, select that app in Overview instead of relying on the general overview screen.
- Use a normal screenshot when only the visible state matters; it is quicker and avoids including unrelated content lower on a page.
- Open the saved image before sharing so you can check that text, images, and the intended page boundary are present.
- When documenting a problem, take the screenshot before changing the screen so the visible state matches the issue you are reporting.
