In a VDI session, a browser may render inside the virtual machine or be redirected to your endpoint. Use the capture method that matches that architecture and your organization’s policy:
- Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops: use the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant Snipping Tool for supported redirected and overlay content, or capture from the endpoint when Browser Content Redirection is active.
- Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD): check screen-capture protection before trying shortcuts; an administrator may have intentionally blocked captures.
- Any VDI: clipboard transfer is a separate policy. A successful capture can still fail to paste or leave the session.
Before you capture: identify the VDI path
Record the VDI product, endpoint operating system, connection client, client version, browser, and whether browser content redirection is enabled. Those details determine whether the pixels are drawn in the virtual machine or locally on your computer. Also confirm that your organization permits screenshots, clipboard transfer, and saving images outside the session.
A black or incomplete image is often an architectural or policy result rather than a faulty keyboard shortcut. Do not try to bypass an intentional restriction; request an approved export or documentation method from your administrator.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops
Use the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant Snipping Tool
Citrix documents a Snipping Tool in the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant that can capture overlay and redirected content. The documented requirements are:

- Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) 2607 LTSR or later.
- Citrix Workspace app for Windows 2607 LTSR or later.
- A Windows endpoint.
- The Web Studio policy named Screenshot Redirected Content enabled by an administrator.
Have your administrator verify the deployed versions rather than assuming that a similarly named release meets the requirement.
- Open the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant in the session.
- Select Snipping tool, then choose New.
- Select the region containing the website. The tool can capture a selected region, the complete single-screen session, or all screens, and it supports a delayed capture.
- Save the result as PNG or BMP, or send it to the clipboard if clipboard policy allows.
If redirected content is missing, ask the administrator to confirm the policy, VDA and Workspace app versions, and whether App Protection is blocking screenshots.
When Browser Content Redirection is active
Citrix Browser Content Redirection (BCR) can draw the browser page on the endpoint instead of inside the remote desktop. In that state, pressing Print Screen or Win+Shift+S inside the session may capture only the Internet Explorer or Chrome frame; the visible webpage is outside the session’s rendered surface.
Use Citrix’s endpoint workaround:
- Focus the Desktop Viewer toolbar so the endpoint is handling the capture.
- Press Win+Shift+S and select the area containing the redirected webpage, or press Print Screen to capture the endpoint desktop.
- On dual monitors, endpoint Print Screen can include both displays.
- Crop or redact unrelated windows, notifications, names, or other confidential information before sharing.
This method captures your local desktop, not just the virtual session. Confirm that endpoint capture is allowed by your organization.

Azure Virtual Desktop: check protection before shortcuts
Microsoft documents two host-side screen-capture protection modes for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365:

A blocked or blank image can therefore be the expected policy result. Microsoft states that screen-capture protection is not Digital Rights Management (DRM)-level protection; administrators should combine it with clipboard, drive, and printer redirection controls. Watermarking can deter sharing and help trace a session, but it is not a substitute for access policy.
Platform and client qualifications
Enforcement depends on the connection path. Microsoft documents configuration on AVD session hosts or Windows 365 Cloud PCs through Intune or Group Policy, with enforcement by Windows App or the Remote Desktop client on Windows and macOS. Android and iOS/iPadOS use Intune mobile application-management protection policies. Browser access on Windows is documented for Microsoft Edge for Business with its work profile, an app-protection policy, and Conditional Access. Minimum app versions and operating-system prerequisites vary, and macOS has compatibility limitations, including possible interference with Teams sharing and incomplete enforcement by some native applications. Check Microsoft’s current AVD screen-capture-protection documentation for the exact client and OS combination in use.
Saving and transferring the image
Save inside the session
Saving directly to a permitted folder in the virtual machine avoids clipboard restrictions. Use the Snipping Tool or the endpoint capture utility, then choose a location approved for the data classification.

Copy through the clipboard
Clipboard redirection is independent of taking a screenshot. AVD administrators can set the transfer direction and permitted data types, including images, on session hosts. If image paste fails, the direction or image type may be disabled.
Citrix Workspace app for HTML5 supports copying image clips between a virtual desktop and endpoint with standard copy and paste shortcuts and supports BMP, PNG, JPEG, and GIF. Citrix warns that an image clip larger than 2 MB may make the session unresponsive because of bandwidth demands. Citrix’s mobile and tablet clipboard guidance does not support image formats there. These limits apply to the cited clients, not every VDI product.
Use an approved export when capture is blocked
Ask the service desk or VDI administrator for an application export, a server-generated report, or a permitted file-transfer location. Do not photograph the monitor, attach an unauthorized capture device, or alter policy settings to defeat a block; those actions can violate security controls and still produce an unusable image.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
The image is black, blank, or missing the webpage
- Determine whether BCR or another redirection feature is active. If so, capture from the endpoint using the Citrix workaround.
- In Citrix, verify the Screenshot Redirected Content policy and the VDA/Workspace app 2607 LTSR-or-later requirements.
- In AVD, ask whether either screen-capture-protection mode is enabled. A blank result may be intentional.
- Check App Protection or equivalent endpoint security controls.
Only the browser frame appears
This is the characteristic BCR symptom: the page is drawn locally while the session captures the remote window frame. Focus the Desktop Viewer toolbar and use endpoint Win+Shift+S or Print Screen, then crop the result.

The screenshot works but paste does not
- Check clipboard direction and whether image data is an allowed type.
- Try saving to an approved session folder instead.
- Reduce image dimensions; Citrix HTML5 warns that clips over 2 MB can make a session unresponsive.
- On mobile or tablet Citrix HTML5 clients, use a supported file workflow because image clipboard transfer is not supported.
The capture is cropped or spans the wrong monitor
Use the Citrix Snipping Tool’s single-screen or all-screens option when available. For endpoint capture, select the exact rectangle and remove unrelated monitor content before distribution.
The shortcut does nothing
Check whether the endpoint OS, client, keyboard layout, remote-session focus, or security policy intercepts the shortcut. Try the product’s built-in capture utility, then contact the administrator if protection is suspected.

Reliability, privacy, and operational notes
- Capture the rendered state you actually need: wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle when content loads asynchronously.
- For VDI evidence, record the client and VDA or host policy state with the image so another operator can reproduce the result.
- Redact credentials, personal data, session identifiers, and unrelated windows before sending a capture.
- Do not assume behavior on a third-party VDI platform from Citrix or AVD documentation; client rendering and policy controls differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Print Screen inside every VDI session?
No. Browser redirection can put webpage pixels on the endpoint, and screen-capture protection can intentionally block client or server captures.
Why does my Citrix screenshot show only a browser border?
Browser Content Redirection may be drawing the page on the endpoint. Use the Desktop Viewer toolbar, then capture with endpoint Win+Shift+S or Print Screen if policy permits.
Does allowing screenshots automatically allow copy and paste?
