Open the message, then use your device’s screenshot shortcut: press Side + Volume Up on an iPhone with Face ID, or Power + Volume Down on most Android phones. The image is saved in Photos or Gallery, usually in a Screenshots album. Button names, scrolling capture, storage locations and screenshot restrictions vary by model, operating-system version and messaging app.
Take a screenshot of a message on an iPhone
iPhone with Face ID
- Open the conversation and position the message content you want to preserve on screen.
- Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button at the same time.
- Tap the screenshot preview or the capture controls to crop, annotate, share or save the image.
Apple’s current support instructions are available at Apple Support. In iOS 26, quick tools appear automatically after capture; iOS 18 and earlier commonly show a temporary thumbnail. The exact preview behavior therefore depends on your iOS version.
iPhone with Touch ID and a side button
Press and release the Side button + Home button together. Release both promptly rather than holding them, which can open shutdown or emergency controls on some models.
iPhone with Touch ID and a top button
Press and release the Top button + Home button together. The capture appears in Photos after you dismiss or edit the preview.

Find and edit the screenshot
Open Photos, then go to Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. From the preview or Photos editor you can crop out unrelated content, draw on the image, add markup and share it. Keep enough surrounding conversation to make the message understandable, and remove names, phone numbers, notification banners and other private details that the recipient does not need to see.
Take a screenshot of a message on Android
Most Android phones
- Open the messaging app and display the message or conversation section you need.
- Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously, then release.
- Use the on-screen preview to edit or share the capture.
If the buttons do not work, Google’s documented fallback is to press and hold Power for a few seconds and tap Screenshot: Google Android Help. Menus can differ by manufacturer, Android release and navigation mode.
Pixel alternatives
On Pixel phones, open the app overview (the recent-apps screen) and choose Screenshot when that option is shown. Google also documents a voice-command method on supported Pixel software. The available command and controls can change with Google Assistant, navigation settings and Android updates; use the current Pixel instructions at Google Pixel Help if the button shortcut is unavailable.
Samsung and other manufacturer interfaces
Samsung devices generally use Power + Volume Down, but Samsung’s own screenshot settings and gestures differ by model. Some phones offer a palm-swipe gesture, an edge-panel command or a toolbar button. If the standard shortcut fails, check the support page for your exact model. Samsung notes that privacy or security controls can prevent screenshots on particular screens or apps.

On current Android versions, open Google Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Older versions and some manufacturer galleries use Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. You can also search “Screenshots” in the gallery app. If the image is missing, check whether your phone saves captures to a manufacturer-specific folder or whether storage is full.

Capture a long message or scrolling conversation
A normal screenshot records only what is visible. On Android 12 and newer, many scrollable screens show a Capture more control after the first capture. Tap it, extend the selection down the conversation, and save the resulting image. This works on most supported scrollable screens, but not every messaging app, view or protected screen.
iPhone screenshot controls vary by app and iOS version. Where a full-page option is offered, it is usually intended for documents or web pages and may not be available for a chat thread. If your conversation does not provide a scrolling option, take several sequential screenshots and label or crop them so their order is clear. Do not assume that stitching screenshots together preserves every message timestamp or attachment indicator.
Will the other person know you took a screenshot?
There is no universal answer. Some apps can notify another participant, while others block capture or show a warning. Notification behavior can depend on the app, a disappearing-message mode, the specific conversation type and the software version. The safety guidance from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner explains that apps may block screenshots or let someone know one was taken. Samsung likewise documents security restrictions that can prevent capture.

Privacy and safety before you share
- Crop carefully: remove unrelated notifications, contact details and other conversations while retaining enough context to identify what the image shows.
- Inspect the whole frame: status-bar previews, profile photos, location clues and usernames can reveal more than the message itself.
- Protect the original: keep an unedited copy privately if you may need to verify context later; share a redacted copy when appropriate.
- Consider consent and local rules: a screenshot is not automatically legally sufficient evidence, and privacy or recording laws vary by location.
If capturing the screen could alert someone and doing so might create a safety risk, eSafety suggests considering a photograph of the display with another device. This is a contingency, not a requirement for ordinary conversations. Prioritize your safety and seek appropriate local support in a threatening situation.
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The button shortcut does nothing
- Press and release both buttons at exactly the same time; do not hold them.
- Try the Power-menu Screenshot command on Android.
- Confirm which button is the Side, Top or Power button on your model.
- On Samsung or another manufacturer’s phone, use the model-specific support instructions.
The phone opens the power or emergency menu
You probably held the buttons too long or pressed them unevenly. Cancel the menu and try a quick simultaneous press. If a case makes a button difficult to press, remove it temporarily.
The screenshot is black, blank or blocked
Some apps and protected screens deliberately prevent capture for privacy or security. Try the app’s permitted export or sharing function instead. Do not attempt to bypass a restriction without authorization.

Verify that the device runs Android 12 or newer, that the page can actually scroll, and that the app supports extended capture. If any of those conditions fails, save multiple ordinary screenshots.

You cannot find the saved image
Search the Screenshots album in Photos or Gallery, check the device folder listed above, and confirm that the phone has free storage. A screenshot taken in a managed work profile may appear in that profile’s gallery rather than your personal one.
