On desktop Chrome, use DevTools’ Command Menu: open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (Mac), type screenshot, then choose Capture screenshot, Capture full size screenshot, Capture area screenshot, or Capture node screenshot. The first captures the visible viewport; the second captures the entire webpage. Chromebook and Android Chrome use separate device-specific controls.

Choose the capture you actually need

“A screenshot in Chrome” can mean the visible browser page, a selected rectangle, one element, or a complete page that extends below the fold. Select the mode before opening tools:

Goal Desktop Chrome method Captured extent
What is visible now DevTools Command Menu > Capture screenshot Current webpage viewport
Everything on the page DevTools Command Menu > Capture full size screenshot Full document, including below-the-fold content
A rectangle you select DevTools Command Menu > Capture area screenshot Dragged region
One HTML element Select the element in DevTools, then Capture node screenshot The selected node
Chromebook screen, window, or region ChromeOS Screen Capture Full screen, window, or partial selection
Long page on Android Chrome More > Share > Long screenshot Adjustable tall capture

Desktop page capture is a DevTools feature, not the same workflow as an operating-system screenshot. Chrome’s Command Menu documentation describes area capture as working “much like the snipping tool” (Chrome for Developers).

Take a webpage screenshot on desktop Chrome

1. Open the page and DevTools

  1. Navigate to the webpage you want to capture.
  2. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux or Command+Option+I on Mac. You can also open the Chrome menu and choose More tools > Developer tools.

2. Open the Command Menu

With DevTools focused, press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on Mac. This opens a searchable list of DevTools commands.

3. Run the appropriate screenshot command

  1. Type screenshot.
  2. Choose one of the matching commands described below.
  3. Chrome creates an image and sends it through the browser’s normal download handling.

Capture screenshot: the visible viewport

Choose Capture screenshot when you need only what is currently visible in the webpage area. Scroll to the exact position first, close or move anything that should not appear, and set the browser viewport size you need in advance.

Capture full size screenshot: the entire webpage

Choose Capture full size screenshot to include content outside the current viewport. This is the correct command for a long article, landing page, or documentation page. Chrome’s documented device-mode instructions distinguish this from a normal viewport capture (Capture a screenshot).

Capture area screenshot: a selected rectangle

Choose Capture area screenshot, then drag across the page to define the region. DevTools must be docked to the browser window; Chrome’s documentation states that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked (Command Menu documentation). If the command fails, use the DevTools docking menu to place DevTools on the side or bottom and try again.

Capture node screenshot: one page element

  1. Open the Elements panel.
  2. Click the element you want, such as a card, table, image, or header.
  3. Open the Command Menu and run Capture node screenshot.

This captures the selected DOM node rather than the whole viewport. If the command is unavailable, select a concrete element in the Elements tree instead of the document root or an inactive panel.

Prepare the page for a reliable capture

  • Wait for content: let fonts, images, charts, and lazy-loaded sections finish rendering before invoking full-size capture.
  • Set the viewport: resize the browser or use DevTools device emulation when a particular desktop or mobile width matters.
  • Check sticky UI: fixed headers, cookie prompts, chat bubbles, and video controls can appear in the image. Close or dismiss them when permitted.
  • Confirm state: sign in, expand accordions, select tabs, or scroll to the required position before a viewport, area, or node capture.
  • Protect private data: inspect the resulting file for account details, tokens, addresses, internal URLs, or other sensitive information. Chrome does not automatically redact them.

Find and verify the downloaded image

The screenshot uses Chrome’s normal download path. If you do not see it, check the download indicator in the toolbar and open Chrome’s configured download location. The exact folder depends on your operating-system and browser settings, so there is no single universal location. Open the file and verify that the extent, scroll position, text, images, and any selected region are correct before sharing it.

Chromebook: use ChromeOS Screen Capture

Chromebook has a native capture interface rather than the desktop DevTools sequence.

  1. Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your keyboard has one.
  2. Otherwise open Quick Settings and choose Screen Capture, or press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows.
  3. With an external keyboard that lacks a Show windows key, use Ctrl+Shift+F5.
  4. Choose full screen, partial, or window capture in the capture bar.
  5. Select the target and confirm.

ChromeOS Help says screenshots and recordings are automatically copied to the clipboard (Google Chromebook Help). You can paste the result into an editor or message, and use the system’s save controls when you need a file.

Android Chrome: capture a long webpage

  1. Open the page in Chrome for Android.
  2. Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Share.
  3. Choose Long screenshot.
  4. Move the crop handles to include the required part of the page.
  5. Confirm, then save or share the image.

This workflow is documented in Chrome Help for Android sharing. Menu wording and placement can vary with Android and Chrome versions. For a normal visible-screen image, use your Android device’s standard power-and-volume screenshot shortcut instead.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot command does not appear

Make sure DevTools has focus, then reopen the Command Menu and type screenshot rather than searching the regular Chrome menu. Update Chrome if DevTools is missing expected commands.

Area capture does nothing

Dock DevTools. Area capture is not supported while DevTools is undocked. Reopen the command after docking and drag within the webpage.

The full-page image is incomplete

Wait for lazy images and dynamic content, then run Capture full size screenshot again. If content appears only after scrolling or interaction, trigger that interaction first. A page can also intentionally limit or replace content when it detects unusual access.

The image has the wrong size

A viewport screenshot reflects the current webpage viewport, while a full-size screenshot reflects the document’s complete dimensions. Set the browser or emulated viewport before capturing, and use full-size mode when below-the-fold content is required.

For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.

FAQ

Does Chrome’s desktop tool capture the browser tabs and address bar?

No. DevTools page commands capture the webpage area, not the surrounding browser chrome. Use your operating system’s screen capture when the tabs, toolbar, or entire window must be visible.

Can I capture a page element without writing JavaScript?

Yes. Select the element in DevTools’ Elements panel and run Capture node screenshot from the Command Menu.

Is Chromebook Screen Capture the same as desktop Chrome full-page capture?

No. Chromebook Screen Capture captures the device screen, a window, or a selected region. Desktop Chrome’s full-size command renders the webpage document beyond the viewport.

Can Android Chrome save a long screenshot as a file?

Yes. After adjusting the crop handles in Long screenshot, confirm and use the available save or share action.
