The right route depends on how well your site already works on phones, whether you need App Store or Google Play distribution, which member workflows must remain protected, how subscriptions will be billed, and how much ongoing maintenance you can support.
Most membership businesses should evaluate these options in order: improve the mobile site and assess a progressive web app (PWA), wrap the site in a WebView, use an app connector made for the membership platform, or build a custom native app. Start with the smallest option that delivers the member experience you actually need.
Choose the conversion route
Each approach reuses a different amount of your existing website and creates a different maintenance burden.
| Route | Best fit | What it reuses | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Responsive site or PWA | Your site already works well on phones and you mainly want an installable, app-like experience. | Nearly all web content, accounts, access rules and checkout. | Installability on target browsers, offline requirements, push support, login and gated content, analytics and web checkout. |
| WebView wrapper | You want an app container while retaining most of the existing web interface. | The website UI, authentication and membership backend, subject to testing. | Cookies and sessions, protected downloads, navigation, external links, accessibility, checkout and store-review requirements. |
| Platform-specific app connector | Your membership platform has a supported app product and preserving its access rules is important. | Platform content and entitlement logic supported by the connector. | Supported content types and plugins, login, synchronization, registration choices, store setup, vendor costs and dependence. |
| Custom native or no-code native app | You need app-specific workflows, deeper device integration or a substantially different interface. | Potentially the backend, through APIs and identity integration; the interface and much of the app behavior are rebuilt. | API coverage, entitlement synchronization, notifications, accessibility, billing, store rules, development and long-term ownership. |
A PWA can be installed from a supported browser and may avoid store distribution, but “PWA” does not guarantee offline access or notifications on every device. A WebView displays a URL inside an app; FlutterFlow describes its WebView widget this way and notes that some sites restrict this behavior. Neither option repairs a poor mobile website.

1. Audit the member experience before building
Use real accounts on current iOS and Android browsers. Test every tier, not just an administrator account, and record where members lose time or access.
Inventory the highest-value tasks
- Sign-in, sign-out, password reset and account recovery
- Course lessons, video or audio playback and progress tracking
- Community posts, comments, messaging and notifications
- Search, bookmarks or saved content
- Downloads and any protected files
- Billing, upgrades, cancellations and receipts
Check the mobile website
- Confirm responsive layouts at common phone widths and with large text enabled.
- Open protected URLs directly while signed in and signed out.
- Test media playback, orientation changes, poor connections and interrupted sessions.
- Complete checkout, cancellation and password reset from a phone.
- Verify that sessions survive app or browser restarts without weakening security.
- Check keyboard navigation, labels, contrast and screen-reader behavior.
Fix these problems before adding an app shell. A wrapper faithfully reproduces confusing navigation, broken checkout and inaccessible controls.
2. Decide whether a PWA is enough
A PWA keeps your site as the product while adding app-like installation where the browser and device support it. It is usually the lightest and least expensive path when members do not need store discovery or deep device features.

Choose a PWA when
- Members can complete their important tasks in the mobile site.
- Home-screen installation is more important than an App Store listing.
- Your web checkout and existing login should remain the source of truth.
- You can accept browser- and operating-system differences.
Verify the limits
Test installation prompts, launch behavior, cached assets, media, downloads and account changes on the browsers your members use. Decide explicitly whether offline reading is required and which content may be cached. Test push notifications rather than assuming they work consistently across devices. FlutterFlow documents PWA modes with offline functionality and push notifications, while also documenting compatibility issues for some web features; treat those as capabilities to validate, not promises.
3. Use a WebView only after the site is app-ready
A WebView wrapper loads your membership URL inside an iOS or Android application. FlutterFlow’s documentation says its WebView widget displays website content inside an app. This can shorten initial development, but it does not turn web behavior into native behavior.
Test the wrapper’s failure points
- Whether cookies, tokens and refresh flows persist securely.
- Whether a member can open a deep link and return to the correct lesson.
- Whether gated pages, downloads and embedded media work inside the view.
- Whether payment pages, identity providers and external links need a system browser.
- Whether back gestures, rotation, keyboard handling and accessibility feel coherent.
- Whether the site or a third-party service blocks display in a WebView.
Some app stores scrutinize apps that provide little functionality beyond a repackaged website. Review the current store rules for your category and region before investing in packaging.

4. Check for a membership-platform app connector
If your site runs on a platform with a supported app product, this can preserve existing membership rules more directly than a generic wrapper. MemberPress AppKit, for example, documents native iOS and Android apps linked to a MemberPress site; its documentation says the app pulls content directly from the website and uses the site’s access rules.
That evidence applies to MemberPress. It does not establish compatibility with arbitrary membership plugins or custom systems.

5. Build custom only for a defined product need
A custom native or no-code native build makes sense when a PWA, WebView or connector cannot deliver a required workflow. Examples include a redesigned learning flow, sophisticated offline access, device integrations, advanced notifications or a distinct native interface.
Plan the integration
- Expose stable APIs for content, profiles, progress and entitlements.
- Define one identity model and secure token exchange between web and app.
- Specify how upgrades, downgrades, refunds, chargebacks and cancellations propagate.
- Design push permissions, notification preferences and deep links.
- Set accessibility requirements before screens are implemented.
- Assign ownership for source code, certificates, releases and incident response.
Bubble documents native mobile subscriptions processed through Apple and Google billing. That demonstrates a billing integration capability, not a turnkey migration from an existing membership site; connecting your current users and access rules still requires an explicit design.
Map identity and entitlements
The app must know who a member is and what that member may open. Write this contract before development.

- Define the canonical member record and the identifier shared by web and app.
- Choose the sign-in method and recovery path, including email changes and multi-factor authentication.
- Document access states: active, trial, lapsed, upgraded, refunded, canceled and newly registered.
- Set the synchronization interval or event mechanism for entitlement changes.
- Test direct links to protected content after sign-in, sign-out and account switching.
- Confirm that revoked access is removed promptly from cached screens and downloads.
Resolve subscriptions and store billing before coding screens
Do not assume your existing web checkout can simply be copied into every store-distributed app. Billing requirements vary by storefront, country, app category, date and business model. Check the current Apple App Review and Google Play billing documentation for every distribution region.
Document the customer journeys
- Existing web subscriber: installs the app, signs in and receives the correct entitlement without buying again.
- New web subscriber: registers and pays on the website, where that path is allowed and clearly explained.
- New app subscriber: buys an in-app product, receives access and can manage the subscription under the applicable store rules.
- Switching customer: understands whether two subscriptions can coexist and how cancellation or migration works.
MemberPress AppKit documents both website-only registration and an in-app-purchase path; its guide says each membership needs a corresponding store product for the latter. Mighty Networks documents iOS plan purchases through Apple’s in-app payment after approval, while its Android app directs paid-plan purchases to a browser or desktop. These are product-specific examples, not universal policy. Budget time for store-side product configuration, review and policy changes.
MemberPress marketing has also claimed “3x–5x” sales conversion for in-app payments. The cited product page provides no study, sample, methodology or publication year, so treat that as an unverified vendor claim rather than a forecast.
Build, test and publish
- Create separate development and production app identifiers, signing credentials and backend environments.
- Prepare store records, icons, screenshots, descriptions, privacy details, support contact information and account-deletion handling where required.
- Test physical devices, not only simulators, using representative accounts for every membership tier.
- Exercise sign-in, deep links, media, downloads, checkout, restore-purchase flows, cancellation and revoked access.
- Submit a review-ready build and respond to store feedback with reproducible test credentials when appropriate.
- Monitor crashes, authentication failures, entitlement mismatches and subscription support requests after release.
FlutterFlow’s Apple deployment documentation covers App Store Connect setup and deployment steps. MemberPress documents test builds, access-rule and in-app-purchase testing, store submissions and ongoing updates. Their procedures describe those products; your toolchain may differ.

Publishing is the beginning of the operating work. Name an owner for:
- Member support and account recovery
- Store reviews, metadata and policy responses
- Operating-system compatibility and dependency updates
- Certificates, signing keys and release scheduling
- Subscription, refund and entitlement incidents
- Crash, performance, accessibility and security monitoring
- Member communications during outages or maintenance
Re-test after major iOS, Android, browser, payment-provider or membership-platform changes. Keep a documented rollback or maintenance message so members are not left with a blank screen when a dependency fails.
Quick Recap
A practical decision framework
- Select a PWA when the web experience is already strong and installation is the main goal.
- Select a WebView when an app container or store presence matters but the web interface is acceptable after thorough testing.
- Select a platform connector when your specific membership system is supported and preserving its rules outweighs vendor dependence.
- Select custom development when native workflows, device features or interface control justify a larger build and permanent maintenance budget.
