What “long screenshot” means on iPad
Apple calls a scrolling or extended capture a Full Page screenshot. It captures content beyond the visible display—for example, an entire webpage in Safari—instead of only the portion currently on screen. The capture is created from the standard screenshot preview, so you do not need a separate screenshot app or subscription.
The Full Page control is part of Apple’s documented workflow for supported long content. Safari webpages are Apple’s example; an individual third-party app may not offer the control. If Full Page is absent, use that app’s own export or print-to-PDF command when available.
Take a full-page screenshot step by step
- Open the content. In Safari, load the webpage you want to preserve. Scroll or wait until the page has loaded the material you expect to capture.
- Trigger a normal screenshot. On an iPad without a Home button (Face ID models), quickly press and release the top button and either volume button at the same time. On an iPad with a Home button, quickly press and release the top button and the Home button together.
- Open the preview. Immediately tap the screenshot thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner. If you let the thumbnail disappear, take the screenshot again; the editing screen is where the Full Page option appears.
- Select Full Page. At the top of the screenshot editor, tap Full Page. A tall preview replaces the usual screen-only image.
- Inspect and crop. Drag through the preview to check the captured page. Use the crop controls if you want to remove margins or stop at a particular section.
- Export it. Tap Done, then choose Save to Photos for an image or Save PDF to Files for a PDF. Pick a folder in Files when prompted for the PDF destination.
Apple’s guide describes this as capturing content that exceeds the iPad screen, such as an entire Safari webpage. The exact length and available controls depend on the content that the app exposes to the screenshot system.

Button combinations by iPad design

Press and release rather than holding the buttons. Holding them can open the power-off or emergency controls instead of taking a screenshot.
Save the result as an image or PDF
Image in Photos
Choose Save to Photos after tapping Done. This is useful when you need a visual asset to annotate, share in a message, or place in a document. The resulting file is stored with your other photos, where you can use the normal share and edit controls.
PDF in Files
Choose Save PDF to Files when you need a document that can be filed, searched or sent as an attachment. Select an iCloud Drive or local folder and confirm the filename. A PDF is usually the more practical format for a long article or receipt because it preserves the page as a document rather than a very tall image.
Choose the format before sharing
- Use an image when the recipient expects a picture or when you need image editing.
- Use a PDF when the capture is primarily a document or must be stored in a folder structure.
- Review the preview before exporting; cropping in the screenshot editor is easier than repairing an incorrectly framed capture later.
Other ways to start a screenshot
Apple also lists an Apple Pencil swipe diagonally upward from either bottom corner, AssistiveTouch and Siri as alternate screenshot triggers. These methods only start the screenshot; you still open the preview and choose Full Page for a long capture. An Apple Pencil is optional, not a requirement for full-page screenshots.

When Full Page is missing
The app does not expose long content
The documented control is not guaranteed in every third-party app. If the screenshot editor has no Full Page tab, the app may provide only a screen-sized image. Look for an in-app Share, Export, Print or Save as PDF command. Those are general fallback options; their labels and capabilities vary by app.

You captured the wrong screen
Dismiss the preview, return to the page you want, and repeat the button combination. The screenshot begins from the content that is open when you press the buttons; it does not reconstruct a different page afterward.
The page is still loading
Wait for the page to finish loading before taking the screenshot. If images or sections appear only after you scroll, verify the preview and use the site’s own print or export feature when a complete capture cannot be produced.
The thumbnail vanished
The thumbnail is temporary. Take another screenshot and tap the new thumbnail promptly. You can also locate the screen-only image in Photos, but the Full Page control is accessed from the screenshot editing view.

Save it to Files as a PDF, crop unnecessary sections, or share a link to the original page instead. A very tall image can be awkward for messaging and may be resized by the receiving service.
Practical checks before you capture
- Confirm that the address, account information and other private data visible on the page may be shared.
- Close menus, permission prompts and overlays that would obscure the content.
- Use the page’s normal zoom and layout so text remains legible in the exported file.
- Allow images and embedded sections to finish loading, then inspect the Full Page preview from top to bottom.
- Decide whether Photos or Files is the right destination before tapping Done.

Troubleshooting automated captures
The response is not an image
Check the HTTP status and response headers before saving the body. A failed load, bot check or blank page is represented by the service’s verdict headers; inspect those headers and the API response rather than assuming every body is a valid image.

Dynamic content is missing
Use a wait-for-selector, delay or network-idle condition, and consider custom JavaScript if the page renders content after its initial load. For lazy images, enable full-page capture so the page can load content beyond the first viewport.
A banner or widget remains

The page needs authentication
Supply the required custom headers, cookies or Authorization value. Treat credentials as secrets and avoid placing them in logs or publicly shared URLs.

Use the bulk endpoint for up to 100 URLs per call or asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks when captures should finish outside the request window. Choose a cache TTL when repeated captures can reuse a recent result.

Can I take a long screenshot without an Apple Pencil?
Yes. The top-and-volume or top-and-Home button method starts the screenshot; Apple Pencil is only an optional alternate trigger.

Does Full Page always save a JPG or PNG?
No. Apple’s documented destinations are Save to Photos for an image and Save PDF to Files for a PDF. The available export choice is shown after you tap Done.
