To copy a selected part of your screen to the Windows clipboard, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a snipping mode if the toolbar appears, and drag over the area you want. Windows copies the finished snip automatically. Open the destination app and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
This works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The other shortcuts below let you copy the active window or the entire screen instead.
Choose the shortcut for what you need
| What to capture | Shortcut | What happens | How to paste |
|---|---|---|---|
| A rectangular or freeform region | Windows logo key + Shift + S | The Snipping Tool overlay opens. Select a mode and capture an area; the result is copied to the clipboard. | Ctrl + V |
| The currently active window | Alt + PrtScn | Windows copies the active window, rather than the whole desktop, to the clipboard. | Ctrl + V |
| The full screen | PrtScn | On configurations where Print Screen copies the screen, the full display is placed on the clipboard. On others, the key opens screen snipping. | Ctrl + V |
| A keyboard without a PrtScn key | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on some hardware | A hardware-dependent screenshot shortcut documented by Microsoft. Availability depends on the keyboard. | Ctrl + V |
For most people, Windows logo key + Shift + S is the safest default because you can select exactly what belongs in the image and do not need to change a Print Screen setting.
Copy a selected area with Windows logo key + Shift + S
- Display the page, window, or desktop area you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a capture mode if needed. Rectangle is useful for a normal box; freeform lets you draw an irregular outline; window captures one window; full-screen captures every display.
- For a region, press and hold the mouse button (or drag with a touchpad) from one corner to the opposite corner. Release when the selection is complete.
- Switch to the document, email, chat, image editor, or other destination and press Ctrl + V.
The capture is copied immediately, so you can paste it without finding a file in Pictures. If your device uses a screen reader, Microsoft documents the spoken confirmation “Screenshot copied to clipboard.”

Edit before copying
After the snip, select the notification that appears near the taskbar to open it in Snipping Tool. Use the available markup or crop controls, then select the tool’s copy control. Paste the edited image with Ctrl + V. Copying after editing replaces the earlier clipboard image with the edited version.
Copy the active window
- Click the window you want so it is the active window.
- Press Alt + PrtScn. Windows copies that window’s contents to the clipboard.
- Open the destination and press Ctrl + V.
This is useful when a browser, dialog, or application is in front of other windows and you do not want the rest of the desktop in the screenshot. It captures the active window, not an arbitrary rectangle.
Copy the full screen
Using PrtScn
Press PrtScn, then press Ctrl + V in the destination app. Microsoft documents Print Screen as a clipboard capture shortcut, but current Windows configurations can assign the key to open screen snipping instead. If a toolbar opens, choose its full-screen option and then paste.
Changing Print Screen behavior
To check the setting, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn it off if you want the key to copy the full screen directly; leave it on if you prefer the snipping overlay. The exact result can also depend on the keyboard firmware and layout.

Paste the screenshot
- Open an application that accepts images, such as Word, Outlook, Paint, Teams, a browser-based editor, or a chat window.
- Click where the image should appear.
- Press Ctrl + V, or use the application’s Paste command.
Clipboard copying and file saving are different operations. A clipboard capture is ready for immediate pasting; it is not necessarily saved as a permanent image file. If you need a file, open the snip in Snipping Tool and use its save command, or paste it into an image editor and save it there.
Use clipboard history for earlier screenshots
Ordinary clipboard pasting uses the most recently copied item. To retrieve an earlier capture, press Windows logo key + V.
- Press Windows logo key + V.
- If Windows says clipboard history is off, select the prompt to turn it on. You can also go to Settings > System > Clipboard and enable clipboard history.
- Select an earlier image from the panel to paste it into the active application.
You can pin an item in the history panel so it remains available according to Windows’ clipboard-history rules. Clipboard synchronization across devices is a separate setting: enable sync in Settings > System > Clipboard and use the same Microsoft account or work account on each device. Do not place confidential screenshots in a synchronized clipboard unless your organization’s policy permits it.
Keyboard and hardware edge cases
The keyboard has no visible PrtScn key
Some laptops place Print Screen on a shared key or require an Fn layer. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible shortcut on some hardware, but it is not universal. Try Windows logo key + Shift + S first; it avoids dependence on a dedicated Print Screen key.

The key label is abbreviated
Look for labels such as PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Scr. On a compact keyboard, hold Fn while pressing that key. If the key still opens screen snipping, check the Accessibility keyboard setting described above.
Multiple monitors
A full-screen capture can include the display arrangement exposed to Windows, while a region capture lets you draw over the monitor area you actually need. For one application, Alt + PrtScn avoids capturing neighboring windows.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that will not paste
Nothing appears after Ctrl + V
- Capture again and wait for the snip overlay or notification to finish before pasting.
- Confirm the destination accepts images. A plain-text field cannot display an image.
- Click inside the destination first, then press Ctrl + V.
- Press Windows logo key + V to see whether the screenshot is present in clipboard history.
PrtScn opens a toolbar instead of copying immediately
This is usually the configured behavior, not a failed capture. Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. You can either turn that option off or use the toolbar’s full-screen mode.
The shortcut does nothing
- Try Windows logo key + Shift + S instead of a hardware-dependent key combination.
- Make sure the Windows logo key is not locked by a keyboard gaming mode.
- On a laptop, try the manufacturer’s Fn layer for Print Screen.
- If the Snipping Tool overlay appears but the result is missing, complete the selection and then check clipboard history.
The image is from the wrong window
Use Alt + PrtScn only after clicking the intended window, or use Windows logo key + Shift + S and select the exact rectangle. The active-window shortcut follows focus, so a different window may be captured if focus changed.

Clipboard history is empty
History is off by default. Enable it at Settings > System > Clipboard, then capture a new screenshot. Enabling history does not retroactively recover items that were copied before it was turned on.

If what you need is a screenshot of a public website URL rather than your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF through one request. It is a developer service, so it does not replace the Windows clipboard shortcuts above; save its response, then paste that file wherever you need it.
Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. A cURL request is:

- Need a repeatable screenshot of a website URL: use an API such as ScreenshotNeo, then save or paste the returned image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows save a screenshot when it copies it to the clipboard?
Not necessarily. Clipboard capture is intended for immediate pasting. To keep a file, open the capture in Snipping Tool and save it, or paste it into an image editor and save it there.
Can I copy a screenshot without using Print Screen?
Yes. Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the built-in Snipping Tool selection and works without a dedicated PrtScn key.
