WooCommerce core lets you create coupons and set ordinary restrictions, but the documented control that limits a coupon to new customers comes from an extension. Create the coupon under Marketing > Coupons, set its discount and usage rules, then use WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions or Smart Coupons for first-order eligibility. Check how your chosen extension handles guest orders before you promote the offer.
What WooCommerce core can—and cannot—do
Core WooCommerce supports coupon codes, discount types, product and spending restrictions, expiry dates, and usage limits. Its documented coupon settings do not include a built-in “new customers only” eligibility control. To target first-time buyers, use an extension that explicitly provides that qualification, such as WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions or WooCommerce Smart Coupons.
The setup steps below describe documented features. Admin labels and extension behavior can change, so confirm them against the versions installed on your store.
Create the coupon in WooCommerce
- Enable coupons if needed. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > General, enable Enable coupons, and save the changes. See the WooCommerce coupon management documentation.
- Add a coupon. Go to Marketing > Coupons and add a coupon. Enter a code customers can type, or generate one if that option is available in your admin.
- Choose the discount. Select a percentage discount, fixed-cart discount, or fixed-product discount, then enter the amount. Add an expiry date if the offer should end. Choose the value to suit your margins and campaign; the cited setup documentation does not establish a universally appropriate discount percentage.
- Set restrictions and limits. Use the coupon’s restriction and usage-limit settings to define eligible products, minimum or maximum spend, whether the coupon can be combined with other coupons, total redemptions, and redemptions per user.
- Save, then configure new-customer eligibility. Use one of the extension options below. Do not assume that setting the core coupon’s ordinary restrictions alone makes it first-purchase-only.
Choose how to identify a new customer
The two documented approaches differ in how they qualify customers and handle guest order history. They are extension features, not core coupon settings.
#1 Best Overall
| Extension | New-customer control | Guest-order handling |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions | Adds New customers only in the coupon’s Usage Restriction area. Its documentation defines new customers as those who have not completed an order on the site. | Recommends disabling guest checkout for the most reliable account-based check. It also documents a setting to check guest orders against existing orders. |
| WooCommerce Smart Coupons | Documents a For new customers? option for a new-customer coupon. | Its guide says prior guest orders are checked against the billing email entered at checkout. |
See the official guides for WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions and Smart Coupons’ first-order discount setup. Use the guest-order method documented for the extension you install; matching behavior should not be assumed to be the same across extensions.
Understand what “first purchase” means
Under WooCommerce Coupon Restrictions’ documented definition, customers are “new customers” if they have not yet completed an order on the site. A customer whose first order is still processing is still counted as new. That definition matters if you want to prevent the coupon from being used while an earlier order is awaiting completion.
If a specific coupon should be redeemable only once by a customer, set Usage limit per user to 1 as the Coupon Restrictions documentation recommends. This is separate from the extension’s new-customer eligibility check: one determines who qualifies, while the other limits repeat use of that coupon.
Rank #2
Choose code entry or automatic application
With core WooCommerce, customers enter a coupon code; core does not automatically apply coupons. If you want a qualifying first-purchase discount to be applied without code entry, Smart Coupons documents an optional auto-application feature. See Smart Coupons documentation.
Automatic application changes how the customer receives the discount, not the need to configure eligibility and usage limits. Confirm that the extension’s new-customer rule and guest-order matching fit your checkout flow.
Distinguish a first-order discount from a post-purchase coupon
A discount applied to a customer’s first order reduces the order currently being placed. A coupon emailed after that order is completed is an incentive for a later purchase; it does not discount the order that triggered the email.
AutomateWoo documents a workflow that triggers on a completed first order and sends a coupon by email. Use that kind of workflow when your goal is to encourage a second purchase, rather than reduce the first order’s price. See AutomateWoo’s first-order workflow documentation.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- An account with no completed orders should qualify.
- An account with a completed order should not qualify for a new-customer-only coupon.
- If guest checkout is enabled, try a billing email associated with a previous guest order and verify the behavior expected from your chosen extension.
- Check the coupon’s expiry, eligible products, minimum or maximum spend, stacking behavior, total usage cap, and per-user limit.
- If the coupon should apply automatically, confirm the discount appears at checkout without code entry; if it should be customer-entered, confirm the code works as intended.
The official WooCommerce documentation consulted for these features does not establish a standard conversion lift, redemption rate, or recommended discount amount. Treat the offer size and campaign rules as decisions based on your own margins and goals.
