Choose the right archive format
These methods preserve different things, so the best choice depends on how the record will be used.

Do not assume that any format preserves interactive behavior, authenticated content, or every dynamic element. Check the saved result before relying on it.
Save a complete webpage as a screenshot
Firefox: Save full page
- Open the page you want to retain.
- Launch Firefox’s Screenshot tool.
- Choose Save full page, not Save visible.
- Download the image, or use the tool’s copy option to place it on the clipboard. Mozilla documents PNG as the downloaded image format in its screenshot guidance: Firefox screenshot instructions.
Firefox renders the entire scrollable page into one image. Before filing it, zoom out or inspect the image at several points so that headings, images, and the bottom of the page are present. A very long page can produce a tall file that is awkward to view or print.

Microsoft Edge: full-page capture
- Open the target page in Edge.
- Invoke Screenshot from the right-click menu or Edge settings. Microsoft also documents Ctrl+Shift+S for the Screenshot tool.
- Choose the full-page option rather than a selected region.
- Use the overlay to mark up, copy, or save the capture.

When a screenshot is the better record
- You need to show the page’s visual arrangement, colors, or advertising state at a particular time.
- You are preserving a visual reference rather than a document intended for reflow or printing.
- You need a single image that can be attached to a ticket or inserted into a report.
A screenshot does not prove that links work later, and it cannot provide selectable text unless you run separate OCR. If text search, copying, or page-by-page printing matters, create a PDF as well.
Save a webpage as a PDF
- Open the page in Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Choose Print (commonly Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS; confirm the shortcut for your browser and platform).
- Wait for the preview to finish rendering.
- Set the options that affect the record: orientation, page range, scale, margins, paper size, and background graphics when available.
- Choose Save to PDF or Save as PDF, select a destination, and save.
- Open the saved PDF and inspect page breaks, text, images, and backgrounds.
Firefox print controls
Firefox’s print workflow identifies Save to PDF as a destination and exposes orientation, selected pages, scale, margins, format, and background-printing controls. Its guidance warns that a webpage can be designed to look different on paper than on screen; see How to print web pages in Firefox.
Chrome and Edge controls
Chrome documents the desktop print dialog and its Save as PDF destination at Print from Chrome. In Edge, enable Background graphics if the preview or saved output omits colors or background images, as described in Print in Microsoft Edge.
Always inspect the preview. A PDF can omit content hidden by print CSS, split a table across pages, move headings away from the text they introduce, or leave large blank areas. The official browser guidance describes printing settings, not a universal guarantee of pixel-perfect output, searchable text, or complete dynamic content.

Keep a local offline webpage copy in Firefox
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Choose Save Page As.
- Select the format that matches your need:
- Web page, complete: saves the HTML with pictures and supporting resources in a separate directory. Mozilla notes that the original HTML link structure may not be retained.
- Web page, HTML only: saves the original HTML and preserves its link structure, but omits pictures.
- Text files: creates a text version without the original HTML link structure.
This is useful when you need an editable or inspectable local copy rather than an image or print layout. Keep the HTML file and its supporting folder together, and test the file while offline before moving it.

Create a public archive URL with Internet Archive
- Open Internet Archive’s Save Page Now service.
- Submit the page URL.
- Wait for the capture to complete and copy the resulting Wayback Machine URL.
The Internet Archive Help Center says Save Page Now captures the submitted page with images and CSS and provides a permanent URL. It saves one page at a time; it does not save outlinks or crawl an entire website. Some pages fail because the site restricts crawling or because of SSL configuration. The service also documents browser extensions and a bookmarklet. Consult Save Pages in the Wayback Machine for its stated scope.
A public archive is different from a private local file: submitting a URL sends it to a third-party archive and makes the resulting record available through a shareable link. The help page’s documentation is dated 2018 and marked updated, so do not infer an exact retention policy, privacy guarantee, or archive format beyond what the service describes.
Verify an archived record before using it
- Confirm that the capture reaches the page footer or intended endpoint, not merely the initial viewport.
- Check representative images, logos, fonts, colors, and background areas.
- For PDFs, inspect every page break and confirm that needed text is present and readable.
- Open local files after saving, ideally with the network disconnected, to ensure the copy is self-contained enough for your purpose.
- Record the original URL, capture date, browser or service used, and the saved filename or public archive URL.
- If the page required a login, contained personalized data, or loaded content after interaction, note that the archive may not represent what another visitor sees.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot stops before the bottom
Use the browser’s Save full page or full-page Edge option instead of a visible-area capture. If the page loads content only after scrolling, scroll through it first and wait for lazy images before capturing.
The PDF looks unlike the screen
Print styles may intentionally remove navigation, colors, or other elements. Compare the preview, enable background graphics where offered, adjust scale and margins, and try portrait or landscape orientation. If visual fidelity is the priority, save a full-page image too.
Images or backgrounds are missing
Wait for the page to finish loading, check the print preview, and enable background graphics in Edge or the equivalent browser setting. A local HTML-only save will not include pictures; use “Web page, complete” when you need supporting resources.

The Wayback capture fails
The site may block crawlers, or its SSL configuration may prevent the service from fetching the page. Save a local screenshot or PDF instead, and do not represent an unsuccessful submission as a public archive record.
The saved file opens but is incomplete
Dynamic, personalized, authenticated, or interaction-driven content may not be present in a passive capture. Document what was visible at capture time and, where appropriate, use a tool that supports waits, clicks, custom headers, cookies, or JavaScript before capture.
