Copy the resulting snapshot URL to share or cite. This saves a one-time capture of that page—not a full-site backup, a promise of future crawls, or a guarantee that every embedded image, video, script, or stylesheet will replay.
Save a webpage with Save Page Now
- Open https://web.archive.org/save. You can also start from the Wayback Machine at https://archive.org/web.
- Paste the complete address of the page you want to preserve. Include the right protocol, such as
https://, and check that the URL identifies the specific page rather than only the site’s homepage. - Submit the URL and allow the capture to finish. The Internet Archive’s Help Center describes the process simply: “Put a URL into the form, press the button, and we save the page.”
- Copy the snapshot URL shown after a successful capture. Open it to check what was saved, then keep that link wherever you need to cite or share the capture.
Save Page Now is intended for a page entered by the user. The Internet Archive’s “Using The Wayback Machine” guidance describes it as saving a specific page one time; it does not add the URL to future crawls or save multiple pages, directories, or an entire site. A successful submission is therefore a point-in-time snapshot, not a preservation plan for everything linked from the page.
Choose optional capture settings only if needed
The interface may offer options such as saving a screenshot, saving outlinks, saving error pages, or adding a capture to a personal web archive. Availability and account requirements can change, so check the live form rather than relying on old instructions. Saving outlinks, where available, is not equivalent to a full-site crawl.
What the Wayback Machine capture includes—and what it may miss
The Internet Archive Help Center says Save Page Now saves the entered page, including its images and CSS, but does not save outlinks by default and cannot initiate a crawl of an entire website. “Including” does not mean every resource will necessarily be available or replay correctly. A snapshot’s page HTML and its embedded resources can have different outcomes.

- Images and stylesheets: They may be captured, but replay can show broken images or styling when the relevant files are not available on the archive’s servers.
- Scripts and interactive content: A script-dependent page may behave differently in the archived version. A saved page is not proof that all interactive features were preserved.
- Video and other embedded media: These may be absent or fail to play in the replay.
- Paywalled or login-protected material: Do not assume a capture contains content that was inaccessible to the capture process.
- Linked pages: Outlinks are separate URLs; saving one page does not automatically preserve every page it links to.
Some sites prohibit crawling, and SSL settings can also cause capture failures. A page may be unavailable for reasons outside your control. In addition, a site owner’s request or a robots.txt exclusion may affect availability, and the Internet Archive says exclusions can be applied retroactively. A snapshot that exists today is not an unconditional guarantee that it will always remain accessible.
Check the snapshot before you rely on it
- Open the snapshot URL and confirm it loads rather than showing an error or an incomplete capture.
- Check the parts that matter to your purpose: the text, images, styles, embedded resources, and relevant page state.
- If you need evidence of how something appeared, save the snapshot URL and consider keeping a separate local copy or screenshot as well.
- If multiple pages matter, save each required URL deliberately or investigate a web-archiving service intended for collections. Do not infer that saving a landing page captured its linked pages.
For a citation, include the archived snapshot link—not just the live page URL—so readers can open the captured version. If the page’s exact appearance or content is consequential, describe the capture as a snapshot and retain an additional record appropriate to your needs. Neither a public archive link nor a screenshot independently establishes the truth or authenticity of the material.

Save pages from a browser or phone
The Internet Archive documents browser extensions or add-ons for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, as well as iOS and Android. These can provide a quicker way to invoke Save Page Now while viewing a page; they do not change the underlying scope or guarantee of a one-page capture. Extension availability and current installation steps can change, so use the Internet Archive’s current instructions for the browser or device you use.
The Help Center also points to a Wikipedia JavaScript bookmarklet as a quick browser-saving route. A bookmarklet is a browser bookmark that runs a small script when selected. As with an extension, it is a shortcut to saving a page, not a way to turn a single-page capture into a full website backup.

When you need more than one archived page
For an individual who wants to preserve one URL, Save Page Now is the direct option. For many pages or an institutional collection, distinguish between a one-off save and a service designed for broader web archiving. The Internet Archive’s help section lists Archive-It alongside Wayback Machine tools, making it a plausible option for libraries, universities, and organizations. Check current eligibility, scope, and pricing directly; those details are not established here.
Another webpage-snapshot service is archive.today. Its capture page describes a toolbar bookmarklet for one-click saving and a snapshot intended to remain online if the original disappears. It is an alternative, not an identical Wayback Machine workflow; governance, replay behavior, and availability can change. Consider your organization’s preservation and access requirements before relying on any third-party archive.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete save
- The save fails immediately: Confirm the URL is complete and correctly formatted, then try again. SSL settings can cause failures, and some sites prohibit crawling.
- The page is saved but images or CSS are missing: Open the replay and check the resources themselves. The Help Center notes that broken images can occur when the images are not available on its servers; the snapshot does not guarantee every asset will replay.
- The archived page is not interactive or media will not play: Scripts, video, paywalled content, and other embedded resources may not be preserved or replay as they did on the live site. Keep a local copy or screenshot too if you need a visual record.
- You expected linked pages to be saved: Save each page separately. Save Page Now does not crawl an entire site; an optional outlinks setting, if shown, is not a substitute for a guaranteed site-wide backup.
- A previously available capture is inaccessible: Site-owner requests or robots.txt exclusions may affect availability, including retroactively. Keep a local record when continued access is important.
