If a normal player beside an image is sufficient, use WordPress’s built-in Audio block instead.
Choose the right method first
WordPress supports two different designs:
- Per-image playback: each image has its own associated audio and a play control over the image. The documented fit is the Audio Story Images plugin.
- A nearby audio player: an image and a separate player appear in the post. This requires only the core Image and Audio blocks.
A Gallery block can display several images, but the WordPress documentation does not describe a built-in way to assign a different audio file to each gallery image.

The WordPress.com plan statement applies to hosted WordPress.com sites, not self-hosted WordPress.org installations.
Attach an audio story to each image with Audio Story Images
The plugin directory lists support for JPEG, PNG and GIF images and MP3 and WAV audio. It says you can connect files from either direction: while viewing the image attachment or while viewing the audio attachment.

1. Upload both kinds of media
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Media → Add New.
- Upload the image files and their corresponding audio files to the Media Library.
- Keep the filenames or captions clear enough to identify which narration belongs to which image.
The listing does not specify every codec, maximum file size, hosting configuration or image-audio combination. Verify the actual files on the site you intend to publish.
2. Pair an image with its audio
- Open Media → Library and switch to List view.
- Find the image and use the Audio Story column to select or connect its audio file.
- Alternatively, open the image attachment and use the Audio Story meta box in the sidebar.
- You can also edit the relevant audio attachment and create the link from that side.
Repeat the pairing for every image that needs its own story. Check each association before inserting the media so a similarly named audio file is not attached by mistake.
3. Insert the linked image
- Create or edit a post or page.
- Add the linked image through the Image block or the Media Library picker.
- Publish or preview the post.
According to the plugin listing, linked images receive a play button in posts. Visitors use that control to start the associated audio.

4. Treat autoplay as optional
The plugin describes an autoplay option that starts playback when an image enters the viewport. Its listing also describes a first-visit interaction notice related to browser autoplay policy. Browser and device policies can still block audio until the visitor performs a gesture, so autoplay is not a dependable replacement for a visible play control. Keep the control available and make the story accessible through ordinary user-initiated playback.

- Open the published post on a desktop browser and a phone.
- Confirm that the play control is visible against the image.
- Activate each image and verify that it plays the intended audio file.
- Test a normal click or tap even if autoplay is enabled.
- Check that the page remains usable when browser autoplay is blocked.
The plugin directory describes the feature, but the available documentation does not establish current compatibility with a particular WordPress release, maintenance schedule or support quality. For an important site, test it on staging before committing a large archive of stories.
Use WordPress’s built-in Audio block instead
Choose this route when a conventional player next to an image meets the design requirement. WordPress describes the Audio block as a way to embed music, podcasts or other sound files directly in a post or page.

Add the player
- In the block editor, add an Image block and select or upload the image.
- Add an Audio block where the player should appear.
- In the Audio block, choose Upload, Media Library or Insert from URL.
- Add a caption when the recording needs a title, speaker or other context.
Set playback and loading behavior
The Audio block settings include Autoplay, Loop and Preload. Preload choices have a direct performance trade-off:
- Auto: WordPress warns that the entire audio file is downloaded, which can affect page load.
- Metadata: loads information about the file without requesting the complete recording immediately.
- None: delays audio downloading until the visitor presses Play.
Use Metadata or None when visitors do not need the complete file ready before pressing Play, particularly on pages containing several recordings.
Build an image gallery with separate players
To show multiple images, insert a Gallery block and select files from upload or the Media Library. Add an Audio block before, after or between gallery content as your layout requires. This produces a standard player, not a documented per-image audio overlay. If every image must launch its own narration, use the plugin workflow instead of assuming the Gallery block creates those links.

Accessibility, clarity and performance checks
Give every story a visible context
- Write meaningful alternative text describing the image’s purpose.
- Use a caption or nearby text to identify what the recording contains.
- Keep a visible play control; do not make sound the only way to discover information.
- Provide equivalent text for essential facts conveyed only in the narration.
Keep media practical
- Use the formats documented by the plugin—MP3 or WAV audio and JPEG, PNG or GIF images—then verify playback on the target site.
- For standalone Audio blocks, avoid Auto preload when downloading every recording immediately is unnecessary.
- Preview pages with multiple stories on mobile connections as well as desktop.
Do not rely on autoplay
Autoplay behavior varies by browser, device and user settings. A visitor may need to tap or click before sound can begin, and the plugin’s own first-visit notice reflects that constraint. Design the page so the story remains findable and playable without autoplay.

“I only need one recording beside one image.”
Use an Image block and an Audio block. Installing a beta plugin adds complexity without providing a necessary per-image control.
“Each portrait or illustration needs its own narration.”
Pair each attachment through the plugin’s Audio Story column or meta box, then test every image in the published post.

“The audio starts on my computer but not on my phone.”
That is consistent with autoplay restrictions. Leave the play button enabled and test user-initiated playback rather than treating autoplay as guaranteed.
“The page loads slowly after adding several recordings.”
Check the Audio block’s Preload setting. Auto can download the complete file; Metadata or None reduce immediate downloading. Large media files and hosting limits can also affect results, and the plugin documentation does not establish a universal file-size limit.
“The plugin does not work with my current WordPress version.”
The directory calls Audio Story Images beta and the available listing does not establish compatibility with a specific release. Recheck the current listing, test on staging and keep a native Audio-block fallback before using it on a critical publication.
