Wix is usually better for a guided, all-in-one website builder; self-hosted WordPress is usually better for maximum control over hosting, code, and extensions. WordPress.com is a third option: managed WordPress hosting that is not the same product as WordPress.org. Your best choice depends on how much setup and maintenance you want to handle, how portable the site must be, and the total cost of the features you actually need.
First, define which “WordPress” you mean
“WordPress” can refer to two materially different products:
- WordPress.org (self-hosted WordPress): The open-source content-management software is free to download, but you choose and pay for a separate host. You install and maintain WordPress, themes, plugins, updates, security, backups, and often email or other services.
- WordPress.com: Automattic’s commercial hosted service. Hosting, security, updates, backups, and support are managed for you, with features determined by the plan. WordPress.com says customers own their content and can move it.
Wix is also a hosted service. Its platform bundles hosting and SSL with templates, design tools, blogging, SEO controls, and business-management features. Those are Wix’s descriptions of its offering, not independent performance tests.
Wix vs. self-hosted WordPress at a glance
| Decision factor | Wix | Self-hosted WordPress.org | WordPress.com |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | Guided builder in one service | Choose a host, install software, configure the site | Sign up for a managed WordPress service |
| Hosting and maintenance | Included and managed by Wix | Your responsibility, or a paid service from your host | Managed by WordPress.com; details vary by plan |
| Technical control | Within Wix’s platform and site structure | Broad control of host, code, PHP, themes, and plugins | More managed and plan-dependent than self-hosting |
| Extensions | Wix features and Wix App Market apps | Large independent theme and plugin ecosystem | WordPress features and plugins where the plan permits |
| Portability | Content can be moved, but a full export of design and structure is not offered according to WordPress.com’s comparison | You control the files and database, subject to your host and implementation | Export and migration tools are available, with plan and format limitations |
| Support | Single-vendor help; Wix describes a help center and 24/7 phone support, subject to plan and geography | Usually your host, theme/plugin vendors, or community resources | WordPress.com support varies by plan |
When Wix is the better fit
You want the shortest path from idea to published site
Wix keeps the builder, hosting, SSL, templates, design controls, blog, SEO settings, and business tools in one account. You do not need to select a server, install WordPress, or coordinate several vendors before publishing. This makes Wix attractive for a small business site, portfolio, event site, or personal publication where the priority is getting a polished result without server administration.

You prefer visual guidance over configuration
Wix’s templates and editor provide a starting layout rather than an empty installation. Wix Studio technology lead Marina Tamir describes the templates as “a solid starting point” for creators. That is a vendor statement about Wix Studio, not independent evidence that Wix designs or performs better than WordPress.
You want one support relationship
With Wix, billing, hosting, platform support, and many site features come from one provider. Wix advertises a help center and 24/7 phone support; confirm the current channels for your plan and country before relying on that availability.
Wix trade-offs
- Your design system, site structure, and available functionality are bounded by Wix’s platform.
- Moving blog posts is not the same as moving the complete design, templates, integrations, forms, or business logic.
- You cannot independently choose a different host for the same Wix installation.
When self-hosted WordPress is the better fit
You need control over the technical stack
Self-hosted WordPress lets you select the hosting company, server configuration, themes, plugins, database access, and custom code. WordPress.com’s guidance describes this as greater technical freedom, including certain PHP and code customizations. The cost is responsibility: you must maintain the installation, updates, security, backups, compatibility, and support arrangements.
Rank #2
You expect the site to need specialized extensions
WordPress’s independent ecosystem can support unusual content models, membership systems, complex publishing workflows, custom integrations, and bespoke ecommerce requirements. WordPress.com’s comparison table displays 50,000-plus plugins; another area of its site uses a separate 60,000-plus figure. These are changing, platform-published catalogue counts, not an audited basis for declaring one ecosystem larger.
You want hosting portability
Because you control the WordPress files and database, you can generally move a self-hosted site between compatible hosts. The practical difficulty depends on the host, plugins, DNS, email, media storage, redirects, and custom code you use.
Self-hosted WordPress trade-offs
- Initial setup is more involved than a hosted builder.
- Updates can create theme or plugin conflicts and require testing.
- Security, backups, uptime, caching, and performance configuration are not automatically solved by the software.
- Support is fragmented among the host, plugin authors, theme authors, and community documentation.
Where WordPress.com fits
Choose WordPress.com when you want WordPress software without operating a server. Its managed service includes hosting, security, updates, backups, and support, but the exact capabilities depend on the plan. It can be a sensible middle ground for a publisher who likes WordPress’s content model but does not want to administer a self-hosted installation.
Rank #3
Do not use WordPress.com plan pricing as a proxy for the cost of WordPress.org. A self-hosted budget must add hosting and any paid themes, plugins, maintenance, backups, email, or professional help required by the site.
Design, plugins, and long-term flexibility
Design
Wix offers a controlled visual system with more than 700 designer-made templates shown on its 2026 comparison page. The number is a vendor catalogue count accessed September 30, 2026, and can change. WordPress gives you theme choices and, with self-hosting, the ability to edit templates and code directly. Greater freedom also means more decisions about responsive behavior, accessibility, updates, and quality.

Extensions
Wix provides built-in functions and Wix App Market apps. WordPress.org lets you select plugins from many vendors and write your own integrations. That breadth can solve specialized problems but increases the need to check compatibility, licensing, security history, update frequency, and vendor support.
Lock-in
Wix’s integrated workflow is convenient, but leaving may require rebuilding the site elsewhere. WordPress.com documents importing WordPress blog posts into Wix, while its own comparison says Wix does not provide a full-site export equivalent for design and structure. Importing posts or exporting content does not automatically recreate templates, navigation, forms, ecommerce data, redirects, plugins, or integrations.
SEO and performance: features are not rankings
Both platforms provide SEO controls. Wix lists sitemap and meta-tag management. WordPress.com advertises built-in SEO tools and access to plugins. These establish feature availability, not a ranking guarantee. The available platform material does not provide an independent, controlled comparison of search rankings or page speed, so neither platform should be declared inherently better for SEO on this evidence alone.

Do not compare a headline monthly number from one platform with a different billing term, region, feature set, or renewal price from the other. Wix says premium plans may be paid monthly or yearly. WordPress.com displays multiple billing durations and plan prices that can change. Third-party WordPress hosts differ in services and fees, and introductory hosting prices may apply only to the first billing cycle.
Best Value
Build a like-for-like worksheet
- Write down the country, currency, billing period, and date of each quote.
- Match the same requirements: custom domain, storage, traffic, ecommerce, memberships, analytics, forms, backups, and support.
- Record the first-term price and the renewal price separately.
- For WordPress.org, add hosting, domain renewal, paid themes, plugins, transactional email, security, backups, and maintenance time or services.
- Price migration or rebuilding if you may change platforms later.
Migration checklist before you commit
Inventory the site rather than assuming an export will reproduce it. List:
- Pages, posts, categories, authors, and publication dates
- Images, downloads, videos, and licensing information
- Every URL, redirect, canonical tag, and sitemap entry
- Forms, email notifications, analytics, advertising, and consent tools
- Products, orders, subscriptions, tax settings, and customer data
- Custom code, integrations, automations, and login or membership behavior
Then verify the destination can import the content format, preserve the URLs you need, recreate functionality, and test redirects before changing DNS.
A practical decision rule
- Choose Wix if your priority is a guided editor, bundled hosting, and one vendor handling most infrastructure.
- Choose self-hosted WordPress.org if your priority is control over hosting, code, themes, plugins, and a deeply customizable technical stack.
- Choose WordPress.com if you want managed hosting with WordPress software and its available export and migration options.
Whichever route you choose, verify current plan limits, support channels, feature availability, and renewal terms for your region. Vendor comparison pages are useful descriptions of each service, but they are not neutral laboratory tests.
