The practical way to show Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, or other ratings in WordPress is to connect the source to a review-feed plugin or use the platform’s own embed, then place the resulting feed with a block, shortcode, or page-builder element. Choose the method according to platform support, account or API requirements, refresh behavior, layout controls, moderation, and data handling.
Displaying reviews on your page is separate from qualifying for star ratings in Google Search. A visible widget does not override Google’s restrictions on self-controlled business reviews.
Choose a display method
There are two common approaches:
| Method | How it works | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review-feed plugin | Connect a source, configure the feed, and insert it with a WordPress block or shortcode. | Sites that need one interface for one or more platforms, styling controls, and repeatable placement. | Supported platform and listing type, API or account requirements, caching, update limits, and storage of fetched content. |
| Platform widget or embed | Generate or copy embed code from the review platform and add it through the editor or a suitable HTML/widget area. | Sites that want the source’s own presentation and are comfortable with platform-specific setup. | Current product name, plan availability, account requirements, responsive behavior, and whether the embed is still supported. |
Do not select a tool solely because it advertises “SEO stars.” The display feature and Google Search eligibility are different decisions.
Set up a review-feed plugin in WordPress
- Confirm the source. Check that the plugin supports the exact platform and business or listing type you use. WordPress.org’s Reviews Feed listing documents Google and Yelp feeds, while Smart Reviews Display documents WordPress.org, Google Places, Yelp, and custom reviews. These are vendor-listed capabilities checked on September 30, 2026 and may change.
- Install from a maintained source. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for the plugin, review its current author, compatibility, changelog, permissions, and documentation, then install and activate it. If the vendor supplies a ZIP, use Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin only when you obtained it from the vendor or WordPress.org.
- Connect the platform. Depending on the integration, you may need a provider account, API key, Google Place ID, Yelp business ID, or an authorization flow. Smart Reviews Display’s listing says its Google integration sends the configured Place ID to the Google Places API and its Yelp integration sends a business ID to the Yelp Fusion API.
- Configure retrieval and display. Select the source, review count, ordering or filters, layout, and appearance. Preview the feed at desktop and mobile widths. Treat claims such as responsive layouts, page-builder support, and review-count controls as listed features, not independent performance tests.
- Insert the feed. Add the plugin’s block in the block editor, paste its shortcode into a Shortcode block or compatible page-builder module, or follow the plugin’s documented placement method. Put the feed beside the product, service, location, or testimonial context it describes.
- Check updates and caching. Determine whether the first fetch differs from ongoing updates. The Reviews Feed listing describes ongoing updates with users’ own API keys and says collection can occur daily under that setup. Smart Reviews Display documents requests on the initial fetch and when its cache expires or is manually cleared. Confirm the current limits and paid-tier boundaries in the plugin documentation.
- Review privacy and moderation settings. Find out whether content is fetched on every visitor request, cached remotely, stored in WordPress, or sent to a third-party service. Decide whether to show all fetched reviews or moderate which items appear, and retain the source attribution required by the platform.
Platform-specific examples
Google reviews
A Google-capable plugin normally needs a Google Place ID or an authorization/API configuration. After connecting the listing, choose the number and presentation of reviews, insert the generated block or shortcode, and test that the business name, rating, review text, and attribution are visible. If the feed stops changing, check API credentials, quota, Place ID accuracy, cache expiry, and the plugin’s current plan limits.

#1 Best Overall
Yelp reviews
Use a plugin that explicitly supports Yelp or Yelp’s own currently available embed. Smart Reviews Display documents sending a Yelp business ID to the Yelp Fusion API. Yelp’s search result indicates that a recommended review can be embedded from a Yelp business page, but current steps and availability should be confirmed in Yelp’s documentation before relying on that route.
WordPress.org and custom reviews
Smart Reviews Display’s listing documents WordPress.org sources and custom entries in addition to Google Places and Yelp. Custom text gives you control over what is published, but you should keep the original source, author attribution, date, and permission records so visitors are not misled about where a review originated.

Trustpilot
A Trustpilot brochure from August 2018 describes TrustBoxes that show reviews, TrustScore, and star ratings on a website or mobile app. That document is historical; verify the current Trustpilot product name, WordPress instructions, plans, and account requirements before implementation.
How to compare plugins and widgets
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it support my exact platform and listing? | A Google Places connector may not support every Google business surface, and a Yelp connector may require a specific business identifier. |
| What credentials are required? | API keys, Place IDs, business IDs, provider accounts, and generated embed codes create different setup, quota, and security obligations. |
| How often does content refresh? | Look for cache duration, scheduled collection, manual refresh, credential requirements, and differences between free and paid tiers. |
| Where can I place it? | Blocks, shortcodes, widgets, and page-builder modules determine whether the feed can be used in posts, pages, templates, sidebars, or landing pages. |
| What can I control? | Review count, ordering, source filters, layout, attribution, and responsive behavior affect usefulness and readability. |
| How is data handled? | Identify what is sent to remote APIs, what is cached, what is stored locally, and how deletion or disconnection works. |
| Does it claim structured-data benefits? | Such claims do not change Google’s eligibility rules or guarantee a search result feature. |
Why the widget will not guarantee Google review stars
Google’s review-snippet documentation treats structured data and search eligibility separately from on-page presentation. For LocalBusiness or Organization review snippets, a business that controls reviews about itself is ineligible for the review-star feature. The restriction applies even when the reviews are displayed through a third-party widget.

A feed that visually shows Google or Yelp ratings therefore does not automatically make it appropriate to copy those ratings into self-serving schema.
If you use structured data for an eligible content type, follow that type’s current required properties and guidelines. Validate the page with Google’s Rich Results Test, inspect the URL in Search Console, and remember Google’s explicit qualification: “Google does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results.”

Launch checklist
- The connector supports the exact review platform and listing.
- Credentials, IDs, quotas, and billing requirements are documented and secured.
- The feed displays the source name, rating, review text, dates, and attribution accurately.
- Mobile, desktop, keyboard, and screen-reader presentation has been checked.
- Cache and refresh behavior are understood, including how to force a refresh.
- Moderation, takedown, privacy, and remote-data handling are documented.
- Any structured data matches visible content and an eligible schema type.
- Google’s Rich Results Test and URL Inspection have been used where markup is present.
Troubleshooting common failures
The feed is empty
Recheck the Place ID or Yelp business ID, authorization, API quota, source visibility, and plugin cache. A source may have no reviews available to the connected endpoint even though you can see content while logged into the platform.
Reviews are stale
Identify the cache-expiry or scheduled-fetch setting, clear the plugin cache if supported, and verify that ongoing updates require an API key or a paid tier. Do not assume a page reload fetches fresh data.

The shortcode appears as text
Place it in a Shortcode block or the page builder’s shortcode element, not a plain paragraph or code block. Confirm that the plugin is active and that the shortcode syntax matches its current documentation.
The layout breaks on mobile
Reduce the configured review count or column count, test the plugin’s responsive option, and check for theme or page-builder CSS overriding the feed’s styles.
Stars do not appear in Google
That outcome is not proof that the widget is broken. Self-controlled LocalBusiness and Organization reviews are excluded from the relevant review-star feature, and valid markup never guarantees a search enhancement.
