Use the shortcut for your laptop’s operating system, then drag over the part of the screen you want: Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Shift + Command + 4 on a Mac, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows on a Chromebook. Afterward, check the capture preview or the usual save location; each system handles saving and copying a little differently.
Choose the shortcut for your laptop

These shortcuts capture part of the laptop’s screen, not a selected portion of a web page that extends beyond the visible display. If you need to capture only one element inside a webpage, the built-in tools may be more manual than a web-capture tool.
Take a specific-area screenshot in Windows 10 or 11
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay opens.
- Choose Rectangle for a box-shaped selection or Freeform to draw an outline around an irregular area. The overlay also offers window and full-screen modes, but those do not select an arbitrary region.
- Click and drag around the content you want. Release the mouse or trackpad to capture it.
- Open the resulting capture from the Snipping Tool notification or app. You can annotate or crop it, copy it with Ctrl + C, or save it with Ctrl + S.
For a menu or other item that disappears when you click elsewhere, open Snipping Tool and use its delay setting before starting the capture. Microsoft documents a delay of 1–5 seconds. Start the delay, open the menu, and make the selection when the overlay appears. This can give you time to expose the item you need before the screen is captured.
Save or paste the Windows capture
The shortcut opens a capture workflow; it does not mean that every screenshot has already been saved to a file. To keep an image, open it in Snipping Tool and use Ctrl + S, then choose a name and destination. To insert it into a document, message, or image editor, use Ctrl + C in the Snipping Tool capture and paste it into the other app. If you see a notification but cannot find a file, reopen the capture and save it explicitly.

Take a specific-area screenshot on a Mac
- Press and release Shift + Command + 4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Click and hold on the trackpad or mouse, drag across the region you want, and release to take the screenshot.
- To cancel before capturing, press Esc.
- If the selection is the right size but in the wrong place, hold Space while dragging to move the rectangle without changing its dimensions.
A partial screenshot normally saves to the desktop. If a thumbnail appears, open it to edit the capture. To copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it as a file, add Control to the shortcut, or use the thumbnail’s menu. Check the thumbnail or paste into the destination app to confirm that the image is ready.
Capture a menu or window on a Mac
For a complete window or menu rather than a hand-selected rectangle, press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space and click the window. For other screenshot controls, press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. Its Options menu includes a timer and save-location controls, which are useful when you need time to open a menu or want new captures saved somewhere other than the default location.

Some apps restrict window screenshots; Apple notes that Apple TV is one example. If a window capture is unavailable in a particular app, a missing or blocked capture may be due to the app rather than the keyboard shortcut.
Take a specific-area screenshot on a Chromebook
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5.
- In the bottom toolbar, choose Screenshot, then Partial screenshot.
- Select the region you want. Once the selection is active, ChromeOS also provides keyboard controls to move or resize it.
- Finish the capture, then check the clipboard or the selected save destination.
ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots to the clipboard. The default save location is Downloads, but Screen Capture settings let you change the destination folder. You can also open Screen capture from Quick Settings: select the time, then select Screen capture. That route is useful if you have trouble identifying the right key on a keyboard.

Get the selection and output you actually need
Include only the relevant content
Before dragging, position the page, app, or document so the target area is visible. Leave a small margin around text or an object if the image needs context, but keep unrelated content out of the selection. On Windows, Rectangle is the most direct choice for a conventional crop; Freeform is available when a rectangular box would include too much surrounding screen. On Mac and Chromebook, drag around the intended region and adjust the selection if the capture controls allow it.
A normal partial screenshot captures what is visible on the display. It does not automatically include content below the fold, hidden parts of a window, or an entire long webpage. Scroll the content and take additional captures if you need another visible portion. For a webpage that must be captured as a complete page, see the browser-capture option below.

Pick a file or clipboard workflow
- Choose a saved image when you need to attach a file, archive it, or send it later. On Windows, save from Snipping Tool; on Mac, look for the screenshot on the desktop unless you changed the destination; on Chromebook, check Downloads or the folder selected in Screen Capture settings.
- Choose the clipboard when you want to paste directly into another app. Windows can copy from Snipping Tool, Mac can send the capture to the clipboard by adding Control, and Chromebook copies screenshots automatically.
- Confirm the handoff by checking the capture preview, opening the saved file, or pasting into the destination. A screenshot appearing on screen does not necessarily mean that a file has been saved where you expect.
Keep private information out of the image
Inspect the selected rectangle before sharing it. A small selection can still include account names, private messages, browser tabs, or other details around the intended subject. If you need to hide something, crop or annotate the saved capture with the available editing tools, or retake it with a tighter selection. Avoid assuming that content outside the visible crop will be removed from a screenshot you captured using a different mode.
Troubleshoot a partial screenshot

Which method should you use?
For a quick crop of something currently visible on your laptop, use the operating system’s native shortcut: it is already available and does not require a paid app or hardware. Choose the clipboard when you are pasting immediately, and save a file when you need a reusable image. If the target is a webpage and you need a repeatable URL-based capture, a service such as ScreenshotNeo is a different tool for that web task; it does not replace the keyboard shortcuts for capturing a local screen.
