If File Explorer shows generic icons instead of image previews, first switch the folder to a medium-sized or larger icon layout, then clear the Always show icons, never thumbnails setting in File Explorer Options. If the files are in OneDrive, make a test file local with Always keep on this device. These checks separate a view setting from a cloud-only file, a cache problem, or a limitation affecting a particular format.
What counts as a thumbnail problem?
A thumbnail is the small picture displayed in an icon view. It is different from the Preview pane, which opens a larger rendering beside the file list. A folder can therefore have working thumbnails while its Preview pane is unavailable, or show a Preview pane while its icon layout is too small to make thumbnails useful.
Use the symptom to choose the right branch:

1. Use a thumbnail-capable folder view
File Explorer does not show a useful picture preview in Details, List or very small icon layouts. Open the affected folder and choose Medium icons, Large icons or Extra large icons.
Windows 11
- Open the folder in File Explorer.
- On the command bar, select View.
- Choose Medium icons or a larger icon size.

Windows 10
- Open the folder.
- Select the View tab on the ribbon.
- In the Layout group, choose Medium icons or larger.
Repeat the change in another affected folder. If previews appear after this step, nothing was broken; the previous layout simply did not provide a thumbnail-sized rendering.
2. Turn thumbnail rendering back on
A Windows setting can force Explorer to display icons instead of thumbnails.
- Open File Explorer and open File Explorer Options. In Windows 11, use the command bar’s more/options controls; in Windows 10, select View > Options. If the labels differ on your build, search Start for “File Explorer Options.”
- Select the View tab.
- Find Always show icons, never thumbnails.
- Clear that checkbox, select Apply, then OK.
- Close and reopen the affected folder. If necessary, restart File Explorer from Task Manager and test again.
This toggle is a commonly recommended check in Microsoft-hosted community support, including the troubleshooting discussion in Microsoft Q&A. Microsoft’s main File Explorer guide documents the surrounding interface, but not this checkbox as a dedicated repair procedure.
3. Check whether OneDrive files are actually local
OneDrive can show a file name in Explorer before the file’s contents have been downloaded. Test with one image rather than changing every file.

- In the OneDrive folder, right-click an image that has no thumbnail.
- Choose Always keep on this device.
- Wait for OneDrive to finish downloading and show the local-availability check mark.
- Reopen the folder in a medium-sized or larger icon view.
Microsoft specifically recommends this action for missing OneDrive thumbnails. Its Fix missing thumbnails in OneDrive article also states that OneDrive does not provide previews or thumbnails for PDFs or images larger than 100 MB. That is a OneDrive service limitation, not a universal limit for local Windows images; no Explorer preference can override it.
4. Rebuild the thumbnail cache cautiously
If local files use a large icon view and the thumbnail preference is correct, a stale cache is a reasonable next check. Microsoft-hosted community answers recommend removing the cached thumbnails, but this is community troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed, universal Microsoft fix.
- Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
- Choose the Windows system drive when prompted.
- In the list of files to delete, select Thumbnails. Leave other categories clear unless you deliberately want to remove them.
- Select OK, confirm deletion, and let Windows finish.
- Reopen the folder and wait while Explorer regenerates previews. The first display can take longer than subsequent views.
Do not delete the original photographs or videos; this step removes temporary preview data. If thumbnails remain absent after regeneration, continue with the format and version checks below instead of repeatedly clearing the cache.
5. Narrow the problem by file and location
Every local image fails
Recheck the icon layout and the File Explorer Options checkbox. Test a small image copied to a new local folder. If the test image works, the original folder may be a OneDrive location, have unusual permissions, or contain files that are not fully downloaded.

Only OneDrive files fail
Use Always keep on this device on one file and wait for synchronization. If a local copy previews but the cloud placeholder does not, the issue is availability or the documented OneDrive limitation rather than the global Explorer setting.
Only PDFs or images over 100 MB fail in OneDrive
Treat this as the service limitation documented by Microsoft. Smaller local copies can help you confirm that Windows itself can render the format, but changing cache or icon settings will not make OneDrive generate a preview that it does not support.
Only video thumbnails fail
Do not assume a video symptom proves that all image thumbnails are broken. Microsoft’s February 24, 2026 Windows 11 preview-update note (OS Build 28000.1643, KB5077239) describes an issue in which File Explorer could fail to show thumbnails for video files containing certain EXIF metadata and lists an improvement. This is a narrow video and metadata case; install the applicable Windows update and retest the affected videos, while using a normal image to diagnose the broader thumbnail setting.
Thumbnail versus Preview pane
If small image previews work but the large pane on the right is blank, you are troubleshooting a different feature. Enable the pane with View > Show > Preview pane in current Windows 11 File Explorer, or the Preview pane control on the Windows 10 View tab.

Microsoft says security updates released on and after October 14, 2025 automatically disable Preview pane rendering for files downloaded from the internet because a malicious file could abuse rendering to leak an NTLM hash. The notice is about the larger Preview pane and downloaded files; it does not explain every case of missing ordinary image thumbnails. See Microsoft’s File Explorer preview security notice for that behavior.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The View command is unavailable: click inside the folder’s file area first, then open View. Windows 11 uses the command bar; Windows 10 uses the ribbon tab.
- Icons appear but never become pictures: verify that “Always show icons, never thumbnails” is cleared, then reopen the folder.
- OneDrive status shows a cloud: right-click the file and select “Always keep on this device,” then wait for download completion.
- Only a few files fail: compare their location and format with an image that works. A cloud placeholder, a PDF, a file over 100 MB in OneDrive, or a video with affected metadata points to a narrower cause.
- Thumbnails remain wrong after settings changes: clear only the Thumbnails category in Disk Cleanup once, reopen the folder, and allow regeneration.
- The side Preview pane is blank while thumbnails work: treat it as a Preview pane or internet-download security behavior, not as proof that thumbnail generation is disabled.

When to escalate
If a new local test image still shows only a generic icon after the view, preference and cache checks, record the Windows version, file formats affected, whether the files are local or OneDrive, and whether the Preview pane or only thumbnails is failing. That information distinguishes a shell-wide rendering issue from a cloud, format or update-specific case before you seek Microsoft support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing these settings delete my photos or videos?
No. View settings and the thumbnail preference change how Explorer displays files. Clearing the Thumbnails category removes temporary preview data, not the original files.
Can a folder remember a different icon size from another folder?
Yes. Explorer can apply view choices per folder or folder type, so test the specific folder where the problem appears rather than assuming every folder has the same layout.
