Alamy is worth considering for both image contributors and buyers, but the decision is different for each: contributors should weigh the contract’s rights, commission structure and payout conditions, while buyers should match subscription volume and license scope to their projects. Alamy’s terms reviewed on September 30, 2026 set revenue-based contributor tiers and a US$75 cleared-funds payout threshold; Alamy Open includes standard commercial and editorial licenses, with enhanced licenses sold separately.
What Alamy offers—and who this review is for
Alamy is a stock-image licensing service with two sides: photographers and other creators submit work to be licensed, while customers license images for editorial or commercial projects. This review assesses Alamy’s published contributor contract and Alamy Open plan terms, not a hands-on test. The terms and prices can change, so confirm the live contract and plan details before committing.
For contributors, the key questions are what rights Alamy receives, how the revenue tiers work, and when proceeds become payable. For buyers, the practical questions are how many downloads a plan covers, whether the intended image is included, and whether standard rights are sufficient.
Is Alamy worth it for contributors?
Alamy may suit contributors who want to make work available for licensing without assuming that a particular image will sell or generate a predictable income. The contract gives Alamy discretion over content pricing and promotions, and the published terms do not establish an average contributor income or sales rate. A contributor should therefore judge the arrangement by its rights and payment terms—not by an assumed return.

Revenue tiers are annual thresholds, not earnings promises
Under the Alamy Contributor Terms and Conditions displayed on September 30, 2026, the revenue year begins September 1. Net license fees determine the tier for the following year. Bronze applies below US$250; Silver applies from US$250 through US$3,000; and Gold applies above US$3,000 through US$25,000. A non-agency contributor who reaches US$25,000 in a revenue year may move qualifying Alamy-exclusive content to Platinum under the contract.
Bronze and Silver can move up during the year when a threshold is crossed, but a refund can bring the total back below a threshold and cause a reversion. These are contract-defined eligibility boundaries, not independent earnings benchmarks. The stated thresholds alone do not tell a contributor what percentage they will receive on a particular license; check the current contract’s commission schedule for the applicable rate and any deductions.
Payout depends on cleared funds and the account balance
Alamy’s 2026 contract says cleared funds are paid within 30 days of the first day of a month if, at the start of that month, the balance exceeds US$75 after account debit balances are taken into account. If it does not, the amount carries forward. Currency conversion, deductions, and applicable affiliate or provider fees can affect the reported proceeds.
Alamy also said in a Trustpilot reply that a balance below the threshold accumulates toward a later payment. The reply noted that the customer’s license fee may differ from a displayed image price because of the use, the customer agreement, or a discount. That explanation is useful context, but an individual reply is not a guarantee of what every license will pay.
Rights, exclusivity and Novel Use need a close read
Contributors are responsible for having the rights or permissions needed to submit their content. The contract gives Alamy discretion to set prices and run promotions. It also describes optional participation in Novel Use, which should be treated as a distinct rights decision rather than a blanket description of Alamy’s AI policy.
If a contributor grants Novel Use permission, the contract allows uses that can include trials with potential customers, machine-learning uses, prototypes or proofs of concept, and high-volume licenses at low unit prices. It says a third-party use for which Alamy charges nothing brings no contributor payment; paid machine-learning licensing follows a payment mechanism set by Alamy. The contract says permission can be ended during April through the relevant account page. Contributors concerned about future uses should read clause 10.1 and the current account controls before opting in.

Submission rules should be confirmed in current help
An Alamy quality-control PDF that appears to date from roughly 2018 described a three-image first submission, DSLR or equivalent images, rejection of mobile-phone images, and an opened uncompressed file size of at least 17 MB. Because that document may be out of date, those figures should not be treated as current requirements. Check Alamy’s current contributor help for accepted equipment, file specifications, and onboarding steps—particularly if submitting phone images.
What buyers get with Alamy Open
Alamy Open subscriptions include a monthly image-download allowance, unlimited seats, one month of rollover for unused assets, Smart Search, and standard commercial and editorial licenses. The plan content includes photographs, vectors, illustrations, and 360 panoramas. Editorial-only images marked as such are excluded from the subscription and may be purchased separately.
Enhanced licenses are available separately for broader use. Do not assume that a standard subscription license covers every placement, audience, distribution scale, or commercial use. Check the specific license wording against the intended project; if it requires broader rights, determine whether an enhanced license is available and what it permits.

Standard and enhanced licenses are not interchangeable
| Option | What the plan information establishes | Buyer check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard subscription license | Standard commercial and editorial licenses are included with Alamy Open. | Confirm the specific license terms cover the planned use. |
| Enhanced license | Available separately for broader use; it is not included as a standard subscription license. | Check the enhanced license terms and price for the image and use. |
| Editorial-only image | Excluded from the subscription; it may be purchased separately. | Check the image’s designation and purchase terms before relying on a subscription download. |
The subscription information does not establish one universal price or download allowance for every plan in this review. Compare the live plan options by monthly volume and price rather than assuming a plan is good value in isolation. A buyer using few images may value flexibility differently from a team that routinely needs many downloads.
Seats, rollover and cancellation
Alamy Open allows unlimited seats and rolls unused assets over for one month. Plans auto-renew unless cancelled. A monthly plan remains active through its current billing period after cancellation; annual cancellation terms differ according to payment schedule. Check the terms for the selected billing option before subscribing, especially if timing cancellation around a project or renewal date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What customer reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Trustpilot includes individual reports from contributors and customers, as well as Alamy responses. One contributor complained about a low-value sale; Alamy’s reply discussed caption and tagging requirements, variation in final license fees, and accumulation of balances below the payout threshold. Another customer described a disputed infringement demand, and Alamy invited the person to contact support.

How to decide
If you are a contributor
- Read the current contract’s rights grant, exclusivity terms, commission schedule, and provisions for price setting and promotions.
- Decide separately whether to grant Novel Use permission, including its stated machine-learning and prototype uses.
- Plan for the US$75 cleared-funds payout condition and understand how debit balances, conversions, and fees affect proceeds.
- Use current contributor help—not an older quality-control PDF—to confirm submission specifications and accepted devices.
If you are a buyer
- Estimate monthly image needs and compare each live plan’s allowance and price.
- Check whether a candidate image is included or marked editorial-only.
- Match the standard or separately purchased enhanced license to the actual intended use.
- Account for one-month rollover, unlimited seats, auto-renewal, and the cancellation conditions for the chosen billing schedule.
