Select an area in the Snipping Tool overlay, then open the capture to annotate, save, or share it. This route does not depend on the laptop’s Print Screen key. If you used Print Screen, the image may be waiting in the clipboard rather than in a folder.
The steps below separate a shortcut problem, a missing saved file, and a possible physical-key or model-specific issue. They apply to ordinary Windows 10 and Windows 11 screenshots; Asus’s separate Perfect Screenshot feature has additional hardware and software requirements that are not needed for normal captures.
Start with Windows + Shift + S
Microsoft documents Windows logo key + Shift + S as the shortcut that opens the Snipping Tool overlay for an image snapshot. Press the keys together, choose a capture mode if the toolbar appears, and drag over the part of the screen you need. The result opens in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it. - Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip from the overlay.
- Capture the screen or region.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool from the taskbar to review the image.
- Use the Save as control to choose a file name, format, and location.
If this works while the Print Screen key does not, Windows and Snipping Tool are functioning. The fault is more likely limited to the key, its keyboard layout, or the laptop’s model-specific driver path.

Open Snipping Tool without a keyboard shortcut
Use the mouse to select Start, type Snipping Tool, and open the app. Select New to begin a still-image capture. Microsoft lists rectangular, window, full-screen, and freeform image snips. This direct test is useful when you are unsure whether the shortcut or the screenshot app is failing.
Microsoft also lists Windows + Shift + R for a video snip. That creates a recording rather than a still screenshot, so use Windows + Shift + S or New in Snipping Tool when you need an image.
Check whether the screenshot was copied instead of saved
Print Screen puts a still image in the clipboard
Microsoft describes the ordinary Print Screen action as a full-screen still placed in the clipboard. It may not create a file immediately. Open an image-capable application, such as Paint, and paste with Ctrl + V. If the image appears, the key worked; save the pasted image from that application.
Snipping Tool has its own review and save workflow
A Snipping Tool capture is available in the app for editing and saving. If you expected a file, open the capture, choose Save as, and check the location shown in the dialog. Review Snipping Tool’s Settings for its automatic-save behavior and inspect the Screenshots folder. A clipboard image and a saved image file are two different outcomes, so an empty folder does not by itself prove that the capture failed.

Choose the capture method that matches the problem

An external keyboard is not a repair for Windows or Snipping Tool. Use it only after testing the software routes, and treat the result as evidence about the built-in key. Keyboard behavior can differ by Asus model, layout, Windows release, and driver state.

Follow this diagnostic sequence
1. Test the overlay
Press Windows + Shift + S and wait for the overlay. If it appears, capture a small region and save it. This bypasses the laptop’s Print Screen key.
2. Test the app directly
Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, select New, and make a capture. If direct capture works but the shortcut does not, concentrate on the keyboard shortcut path rather than looking for replacement screenshot software.
3. Test the clipboard path
Press Print Screen, open Paint or another image-capable app, and paste. If an image appears, save it from that app. If Windows + Shift + S works but Print Screen does not, the issue is isolated to the Print Screen route.
4. Use another keyboard only as a check
Connect a basic USB keyboard and press its Print Screen key. A successful paste from the external keyboard makes a physical fault in the laptop key more plausible, but it does not prove that every keyboard or driver issue is resolved. Avoid buying a replacement as the first step.
5. Identify the exact Asus model before changing drivers
For a model-specific keyboard or driver issue, search the exact model on the ASUS support site and open its Support and driver area. Asus cautions that operations can vary by model and software version. A model number from the laptop’s label or Windows system information is more useful than the general brand name.

Do not confuse ordinary screenshots with Asus Perfect Screenshot
ASUS documents Perfect Screenshot as a separate advanced feature. It is not a prerequisite for Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, or the Snipping Tool app.
The ASUS Perfect Screenshot page, updated November 3, 2025, describes Copilot+ laptop availability and supported processor/NPU conditions for eligible non-Copilot+ systems. It lists a minimum NPU performance of 40 TOPS. For Windows Insiders, ASUS lists Snipping Tool version 11.2504.38.0 or higher. It also lists minimum NPU driver versions of 32.0.203.240 for AMD and 32.0.100.3717 for Intel. Those figures apply to Perfect Screenshot eligibility and its preview context, not to a normal screenshot.

Common symptoms and fixes
Nothing appears after pressing Print Screen
Press Windows + Shift + S instead. For Print Screen, paste into an image-capable app because the documented result is the clipboard, not necessarily a file. If pasting produces an image, save it manually.
The overlay does not open
Open Snipping Tool from Start and choose New. If that works, the application is available and the keyboard shortcut is the part to investigate. Check the exact keyboard layout and your Asus model documentation before assuming a hardware failure.

The capture happened, but you cannot find a file
Open the capture in Snipping Tool, use Save as, and note the destination in the dialog. Check Snipping Tool Settings and the Screenshots folder. A capture held in the clipboard will not appear in that folder until you paste and save it.
Only the laptop’s Print Screen key appears defective
Use Windows + Shift + S or Snipping Tool from Start as the practical workaround. A USB keyboard can provide a limited comparison. If the built-in key is physically damaged, use ASUS support for the exact model rather than applying generic driver instructions.
You are following Perfect Screenshot instructions for a regular capture
Stop and separate the two tasks. The NPU, driver, and Insider-version thresholds on ASUS’s Perfect Screenshot page are feature-specific. They are not ordinary screenshot requirements.
Reliability and workflow tips
- For a selected region, use Windows + Shift + S so the capture starts without relying on Print Screen.
- For a guaranteed file, save from Snipping Tool or paste the clipboard image into an image editor and save it.
- When reporting a problem to ASUS, include the exact laptop model, Windows version, which method failed, and whether Windows + Shift + S or direct Snipping Tool capture worked.
- Do not infer a general Asus failure rate from one laptop; keyboard layouts, releases, and drivers vary.

When to escalate to ASUS
Escalate when the direct Snipping Tool route, clipboard test, and an external-keyboard comparison leave evidence of a laptop-specific fault, or when other keys are failing as well. Search ASUS for the exact model and use its Support area. ASUS’s own guidance says operations can differ by model and software version; do not install Perfect Screenshot’s NPU drivers merely to repair an ordinary screenshot shortcut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Asus laptop need an AI processor to take a normal screenshot?
No. Windows + Shift + S, Print Screen, and Snipping Tool are the standard Windows capture methods. AI/NPU requirements apply to ASUS Perfect Screenshot, a separate feature.
Why does an external keyboard help diagnose the problem but not solve it?
It supplies a different physical Print Screen key. If that key works, it can point toward a laptop-key problem, while Windows, Snipping Tool, or driver issues still require separate troubleshooting.
