iStock is Getty Images’ value-oriented stock-content service for creative still images and video. Getty says its subscription offering can include images, video and music, while credits are intended for buyers whose needs are occasional or difficult to forecast.

Credits or a subscription?
The core decision is how much content you expect to download and how predictable that demand is.

Do not treat the four-images or two-videos statement as a guaranteed price threshold. Plans, markets and promotions change, so compare the current checkout totals and terms for your country before buying.
When credits make sense
- You need a few assets for a launch, presentation, article or event.
- Your monthly demand varies sharply and you may have no downloads in some months.
- You want to avoid committing to a recurring plan before your workflow is established.
When a subscription makes sense
- You publish or produce content every month.
- You can estimate your required number of image, video or music downloads.
- The plan’s eligible library and download allowance match your actual work.
How to compare an iStock plan before paying
- Estimate demand: count expected downloads by month, separating images, video and music.
- Check eligibility: confirm which collections and media types the specific plan covers and whether limits are per month or otherwise defined.
- Check commitment: read cancellation, renewal, rollover and expiry terms for monthly and annual options.
- Confirm licensing: decide whether a standard license is enough or whether you need extended licensing or multi-user rights.
- Check team access: verify how many people may use the account and assets under the selected terms.
- Review checkout details: confirm your market, currency, taxes and any promotional eligibility. A promotion shown in one country or for first-time buyers may not apply to you.
- Test workflow fit: if you plan to use an integration, verify that its current search, metadata, import and download behavior supports your process.
Some current plan pages describe unused downloads rolling over in particular upgrade circumstances, and a Premium + Video offer for first-time purchases redeemable through December 31, 2026. Treat both as conditional, time-sensitive details: confirm the exact terms displayed for your account before purchase.

What “royalty-free” means on iStock
“Royalty-free” does not mean free of charge or unrestricted. You pay for a license, then may use the asset repeatedly in the ways that license permits without paying a royalty each time. The permitted uses, people who may access the file, distribution method and any protection limits still come from the applicable license agreement.
Standard, extended and multi-user rights
iStock describes a standard license and options to add extended licensing or multi-user rights. An extended license can address uses that exceed standard terms; multi-user rights address access by a team or organization. The exact rights and legal-protection limits vary, so read the current license agreement for the intended project rather than assuming every download has identical coverage.

iStock’s AI offering
Getty describes Generative AI by iStock as a tool for ready-to-use generated content trained with Getty Images creative content. iStock’s pricing information also says AI-generated or AI-modified images remain separate from the visual library for other customers to license.
Those are vendor descriptions, not an independent guarantee that every generated image is suitable for every commercial or legal situation. Review the current AI terms and license for your use, especially when a project involves brands, people, regulated claims or high-value distribution.

Integrations and workflow
Getty says APIs and integrations can connect content, metadata and search with tools including Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud and WordPress. This may reduce download-and-upload steps for teams already using those products, but the statement does not establish that every integration has the same feature set or remains unchanged.
Before standardizing on an integration, check its current availability in your region and account, supported media types, metadata behavior, user permissions and how licensed files are stored.

Who should use iStock?
Good fit
- Freelancers, publishers and small teams needing licensed stock content without building a full custom library.
- Buyers with either occasional needs (credits) or a measurable recurring workload (subscription).
- Organizations that benefit from connecting stock search and metadata to Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud or WordPress, provided the current integration meets their requirements.
Check carefully first
- High-volume users whose required download allowance exceeds a plan’s limits.
- Teams needing broad shared access or specialized extended rights.
- Projects requiring a precisely defined legal indemnity or jurisdiction-specific protection.
- Buyers comparing total cost with other libraries; the available evidence does not establish that iStock is always cheaper or better.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Getty’s 2025 Form 10-K reports that more than half of Getty Images’ total revenue came from annual subscriptions as of December 31, 2025. That is a company-wide figure, not an iStock-only measure, and it does not demonstrate customer satisfaction or the value of any particular plan.
No supported evidence here establishes iStock’s current catalog size, comparative image quality, search-success rate, customer-service performance or affiliate economics. Those factors should be assessed separately if they are decisive for your purchase.
Verdict
iStock is most compelling when its licensing terms and media coverage match your project and your download pattern is clear enough to choose the right purchase model. Start with credits for irregular demand; price a subscription when you expect recurring use, remembering that iStock’s four-images or two-videos guidance is a vendor estimate rather than a tested universal threshold. In every case, verify current regional pricing, limits, rollover or expiry rules, license level and team rights before checkout.
