There is no single maximum image size for LinkedIn. The limit depends on where you upload the image: a personal profile photo can be up to 7,680 × 4,320 pixels and 8 MB; personal profile covers have a recommended size of 1,584 × 396 pixels and must be less than 8 MB; and LinkedIn Page and Career Page images must be PNG or JPEG files no larger than 3 MB. Use the dimensions for the specific placement rather than applying one limit to every LinkedIn image.

LinkedIn image limits at a glance

“Image size” can mean either the dimensions of the image in pixels or its file size in megabytes. LinkedIn sets different rules for different upload surfaces, so check both before exporting.

Upload surface Dimensions or ratio File-size limit Accepted format
Personal profile photo Upload range: 400 × 400 to 7,680 × 4,320 pixels 8 MB maximum PNG or JPG
Personal profile cover/background 1,584 × 396 pixels recommended Less than 8 MB JPG or PNG
LinkedIn Page or Career Page image Depends on the placement; see the dimensions below 3 MB maximum PNG or JPEG
Page post image pulled from a URL 1.91:1 ratio; 1,200 × 627 pixels is LinkedIn’s example Page-image limit: 3 MB PNG or JPEG

These are LinkedIn’s published specifications. The profile-photo Help page reports that it was last updated two years ago; LinkedIn’s Page and cover guidance is the source for the other placement-specific values.

Personal profile photo: maximum pixels and file size

LinkedIn’s published profile-photo upload range runs from 400 × 400 through 7,680 × 4,320 pixels, with a maximum file size of 8 MB. The listed formats are PNG and JPG. A 7,680 × 4,320 image is an upper upload boundary, not a recommended profile-photo canvas: LinkedIn advises choosing a photo that will not need much cropping.

For a sharp, well-framed portrait, use a square source image and keep your face comfortably inside the center area. LinkedIn displays the profile picture in a circular crop in some contexts, so avoid putting important details near the corners. The profile-photo specification establishes the upload range and file ceiling; it does not promise that every accepted image will appear uncropped in every interface.

Personal profile cover: recommended banner size

For a personal profile cover or background image, LinkedIn recommends 1,584 × 396 pixels. The image should be JPG or PNG and less than 8 MB. This is a recommended canvas, rather than a published maximum pixel canvas.

Keep text, logos and other essential elements away from the edges. The visible crop can vary with browser-window dimensions and screen resolution, and LinkedIn notes that a cover may look blurry or pixelated if its source image is too small. If it looks soft, try a larger source image while respecting the file-size limit.

LinkedIn Page and Career Page image dimensions

LinkedIn’s Page and Career Page image specification sets a 3 MB maximum for all images and accepts PNG or JPEG. The table gives placement-specific sizes; do not substitute the personal-profile cover dimensions for a company Page cover.

Page placement LinkedIn dimension guidance Notes
Page logo 400 × 400 pixels recommended Square canvas
Page cover 4,200 × 700 pixels LinkedIn may adjust the image to fit different screens, cropping horizontally or vertically.
Life main image 1,128 × 376 pixels Use this specification for the Life main-image placement.
Life custom module 502 × 282 pixels Use the placement-specific canvas.
Life company photo 900 × 600 pixels recommended Recommended dimensions.

For a Page cover, compose the design so it still works if the outer edges are cropped. Preview it at more than one screen size when possible, especially if the design includes text or a logo.

Page post image from a URL

For a custom image associated with a Page post URL, LinkedIn recommends a 1.91:1 ratio; 1,200 × 627 pixels is its example. Images narrower than 200 pixels may appear as thumbnails. If you control the image on the linked page, set an appropriate preview image there and use the recommended ratio so the preview is less likely to be unexpectedly cropped or reduced.

How to prepare an image for LinkedIn

  1. Identify the destination. Decide whether the image is for a personal profile photo, personal cover, Page placement, or Page URL preview. The rules are not interchangeable.
  2. Set the canvas to the placement’s dimensions. Use 1,584 × 396 pixels for a personal cover, 4,200 × 700 for a Page cover, or the relevant Page placement dimensions in the table. For a profile photo, stay within LinkedIn’s published upload range.
  3. Export in an accepted format. Profile photos use PNG or JPG; Page images use PNG or JPEG. GIF is not supported by the profile-photo upload guidance.
  4. Check the file size after export. Keep a profile photo at or below 8 MB, a personal cover below 8 MB, and Page or Career Page images at or below 3 MB.
  5. Inspect the crop. Leave breathing room around a profile portrait and keep important Page-cover content away from its edges. A design that fits one desktop view may crop differently on another screen.
  6. Upload and review the result. If LinkedIn rejects the file, confirm the format and file-size limit first. If the image uploads but appears soft or cropped, revisit its source resolution and composition.

How to get an image under LinkedIn’s upload limit

If the dimensions are already right but the file is too large, compress the image or export it with a more efficient quality setting. LinkedIn itself suggests compressing a profile photo when upload fails. For a photo, reducing JPEG quality slightly can reduce file size without changing the pixel dimensions; for a graphic with sharp text or transparency, PNG may preserve the design better, but can produce a larger file.

  • Keep the original at full quality and make a separate LinkedIn export.
  • Reduce file size in small increments, then inspect fine detail and text before uploading.
  • Do not resize below the intended display needs just to meet the byte limit if a better compression setting will do.
  • For Page images, ensure the final exported file is no more than 3 MB; for personal photos and covers, apply the distinct 8 MB rules above.

Common upload and display problems

LinkedIn rejects the image

Check the upload surface’s format and size rules. A profile photo must be PNG or JPG and no larger than 8 MB; Page and Career Page images must be PNG or JPEG and no larger than 3 MB. A file that is within the pixel range can still be rejected if it exceeds the byte limit or uses an unsupported format.

The profile photo is cropped awkwardly

Use a square source and reposition the subject toward the center. LinkedIn recommends a photo that does not need much cropping, and circular display treatments can cut off content near the corners.

The personal cover looks blurry or pixelated

LinkedIn suggests using a larger file when a cover looks blurry or pixelated. Check that the image has enough source detail for the display size, and remember that how it appears can vary with browser-window size and screen resolution.

The Page cover loses text or a logo

LinkedIn says Page images may be adjusted for different screens and can be cropped horizontally or vertically. Move important material inward, simplify edge-dependent layouts, and check the cover at different screen sizes.

The URL image appears as a small thumbnail

LinkedIn’s Page guidance says an image under 200 pixels wide can appear as a thumbnail. Use an appropriately sized preview image and the 1.91:1 ratio guidance when you control the linked page’s image.

If your next step is capturing a webpage screenshot—not resizing a LinkedIn upload—ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not compress or resize an image to LinkedIn’s specifications, so you will still need to prepare the final upload to match the limits above. The API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF; its options include viewport and output-format settings. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
