If Print Screen seems broken, first press Windows+Shift+S to check whether Windows can capture a screenshot without the laptop’s Print Screen key. Then press Print Screen and Ctrl+V in Paint or another image editor: Print Screen commonly copies an image to the clipboard rather than saving a file. Those two checks distinguish a key or layout problem from a screenshot that worked but was not saved where you expected.

This guide covers Windows laptops. Keyboard labels and Fn combinations vary by manufacturer and model, so there is no single Fn shortcut that works on every laptop.

First, work out what “not working” means

A screenshot can be captured successfully without appearing as a new file. Print Screen commonly copies the full screen to the clipboard. If you expected a file in a folder, it can look as if nothing happened even though the capture is ready to paste.

Use these checks in order. They test the capture feature, the physical key, and where the result went without changing several things at once.

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S. Select a region on the screen. This opens the Snipping Tool overlay and bypasses the laptop’s Print Screen key.
  2. Open Paint or another app that accepts images and press Ctrl+V. If the selected area appears, Windows’ capture route is working.
  3. Try the laptop’s Print Screen key, then paste into the same app with Ctrl+V. If an image appears, the key captured to the clipboard; it did not necessarily create a file.
  4. If you used Windows+PrtScn, open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots.

Write down which test worked. For example, if Windows+Shift+S works but Print Screen does not, investigate the key’s layout or setting. If Ctrl+V shows an image, investigate the expected save location rather than treating the capture as a failure.

Use Snipping Tool when the Print Screen key is unavailable

Capture a selected area with Windows+Shift+S

Press Windows+Shift+S, choose the area to capture in the overlay, then paste the result with Ctrl+V into an app that accepts images. You can also select the notification for the capture to open it in Snipping Tool. This method does not rely on the physical Print Screen key and is useful for capturing only part of the screen.

If the overlay opens but you cannot find the result, test the clipboard by pasting before assuming the capture failed. If the notification is available, opening it in Snipping Tool gives you another way to view the capture.

Use the alternate shortcut if the key is missing

If the laptop has no PrtScn button, Microsoft documents Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar as an alternative. Laptop layouts differ, so check the keyboard legends and the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model rather than assuming another Fn combination will work.

Check whether Print Screen is assigned to screen snipping

Windows can be set so pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping. That changes what the key does, which may explain why it no longer behaves as the whole-screen clipboard shortcut you expected.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
  3. Inspect Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  4. If you want Print Screen to open the snipping overlay, enable the setting. If you want the key to use its usual full-screen clipboard behavior, turn that setting off.

After changing it, test Print Screen again and paste into Paint with Ctrl+V. Judge the result by the behavior you wanted: an overlay for a selected capture, or a full-screen image copied to the clipboard.

Windows 10

The documented path on Windows 10 is Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. Look for the setting that makes Print Screen open screen snipping. Labels and available options can differ by Windows release.

Microsoft’s cited documentation notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date concerns Windows support, not whether your laptop key can capture an image; check Microsoft’s current lifecycle information when making a support decision.

Find the right key and laptop-specific Fn behavior

Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. The label may be printed as a secondary legend on another key, rather than as a dedicated button. On some laptops, the key’s screenshot action requires Fn; on others, the layout or behavior differs. The exact combination depends on the manufacturer and model.

  1. Inspect the keyboard for one of the Print Screen labels, including secondary legends.
  2. If it is a secondary action, try the Fn combination specified in the laptop maker’s instructions.
  3. Test the result by pasting into Paint or another image editor with Ctrl+V.
  4. If the label is absent, use Windows+Shift+S or the documented Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar alternative.

Do not buy a replacement keyboard based only on a generic Fn shortcut. If the key is physically damaged or the layout is unusual, consult the manufacturer’s documentation for that model.

Check the clipboard and the Screenshots folder

When Print Screen copied the image

Open Paint or another image editor and press Ctrl+V. If the screenshot appears, the capture worked and the issue was that you expected an automatically saved file. Save or export it from the app if you need a file.

You can also inspect clipboard history with Windows+V. Clipboard history is separate from the ordinary clipboard, and it is not on by default: activate it the first time Windows prompts you before relying on it. If history was not enabled, use Ctrl+V to test the current clipboard instead.

When you used Windows+PrtScn

For a saved screenshot, Microsoft identifies File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots as the location to check after using Windows+PrtScn. This is a different workflow from pressing Print Screen alone, which commonly copies the image to the clipboard.

Choose the shortcut that matches the result you want

Method Uses laptop Print Screen key? Capture Where to look Hardware needed
Print Screen Yes Commonly the full screen Paste with Ctrl+V; it does not necessarily create a file The key, possibly as a secondary Fn action
Windows+Shift+S No Selected area through the Snipping Tool overlay Paste with Ctrl+V or open the capture from its notification No special key beyond the Windows keyboard shortcut
Windows+PrtScn Yes Screenshot saved by the shortcut Pictures > Screenshots A working PrtScn key or supported laptop layout
Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar No dedicated PrtScn button required Microsoft-documented alternative screenshot shortcut Check the result in an app or the relevant Windows screenshot location Keyboard and Windows support for the shortcut
USB keyboard with Print Screen No; uses the external keyboard Depends on the shortcut used Clipboard or save behavior depends on the shortcut An external keyboard with the key

The external-keyboard option is a practical workaround if the laptop’s key is missing or physically faulty, not a requirement for taking Windows screenshots. Verify that the keyboard you are considering has a dedicated Print Screen key and the layout you need. Windows+Shift+S is the no-purchase workaround.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What happens Likely explanation What to do
Nothing visible happens after Print Screen The image may have gone to the clipboard rather than a file. Paste into Paint with Ctrl+V. If you used Windows+PrtScn, check Pictures > Screenshots.
Windows+Shift+S works, but Print Screen does not behave as expected The physical key may use a secondary Fn action, or Print Screen may be configured to open screen snipping. Check the key legends and the Windows Accessibility or Ease of Access keyboard setting for your version.
The key opens an overlay rather than copying a full screen The Print Screen screen-snipping setting may be enabled. Inspect the setting for your Windows version and choose the behavior you want.
You cannot find the image after pressing Print Screen The screenshot may be on the clipboard, not saved as a file. Try Ctrl+V in an editor. Windows+V can show history only after clipboard history has been enabled.
The laptop has no PrtSc label The key may be absent or represented by another layout action. Try Windows+Shift+S or Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar; check the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.
The key feels stuck or is visibly damaged A physical keyboard fault is possible, but the available evidence does not establish model-specific repairs. Use Windows+Shift+S meanwhile and consult the manufacturer about repair or compatible replacement options.

ScreenshotNeo is for taking screenshots of websites through an API or MCP server; it does not capture your laptop’s screen or repair a Print Screen key. It can be useful when the actual task is to capture a web page from code or an AI agent instead. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use the MCP server tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Use the API key from your ScreenshotNeo account. The following one-call examples request a screenshot of stripe.com and write the response to a file. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.

When to use an external keyboard or seek repair

Consider hardware only after testing Windows+Shift+S and checking whether Print Screen is a secondary key action. A USB keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key is an optional workaround when the built-in key is absent or faulty; verify its layout before buying. If the laptop key is physically damaged, the manufacturer is the appropriate source for model-specific repair and replacement guidance. The built-in Windows+Shift+S shortcut remains available without purchasing a keyboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ScreenshotNeo capture the laptop screen for me?

No. ScreenshotNeo captures website pages through an API or MCP server; it is not a Windows desktop screenshot utility.

Why does the same Fn shortcut not work on every laptop?

Laptop keyboard layouts and secondary-key assignments depend on the make and model. Use that laptop maker’s instructions for its exact key combination.
