Opera is the clearest choice if you want a genuinely free, accountless browser VPN. Its free feature is limited to Opera traffic, however. Firefox offers a free built-in proxy with a 50 GB monthly allowance and staged availability, while Brave’s Firewall + VPN is a paid subscription that protects the whole device. Choose according to coverage, data limits, region, and whether you need protection outside the browser.
Quick comparison
| Browser and feature | Coverage | Cost and limits | Availability and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opera free browser VPN | Opera browser traffic only | Opera describes it as unlimited and accountless | Opera’s September 24, 2026 announcement says automatic protection on public or unsecured Wi-Fi is opt-in, beginning in the United States and France. See Opera’s announcement. |
| Firefox built-in VPN | Firefox traffic only; apps, downloads, and system traffic are excluded | Free, but requires a Mozilla account and allows 50 GB per month; protection pauses after the allowance is used | Progressive rollout with country and eligibility restrictions. See Mozilla Support. |
| Brave Firewall + VPN | Whole-device protection, including activity outside Brave | Paid subscription; Brave says one subscription covers up to five devices | Supports Android, iOS, and desktop according to Brave; confirm current regions and audit scope before subscribing. |
| Opera VPN Pro | Whole-device protection | Paid; Opera describes support for up to six Windows, macOS, or Android devices | Opera lists 48 locations and Lightway support in its product announcement. See Opera VPN Pro details. |
| Aloha Browser free mode | Browser traffic | TechRadar described automatic server selection and disconnection after inactivity in its reviewed version | Terms and logging behavior can change; treat the findings as that review’s assessment, not a universal guarantee. See TechRadar’s comparison. |
1. Opera: best free built-in option for browser-only use
Opera says its free browser VPN has been unlimited and accountless since 2016. That combination makes it the simplest answer for someone asking for a free, built-in VPN without registration. Opera also announced an opt-in setting that can automatically activate the feature on public or unsecured Wi-Fi, with rollout starting in the United States and France. These are Opera’s product claims and rollout details, so check the current release and settings in your region.
The free feature protects traffic from Opera, not other browsers, applications, downloads, or operating-system services. If you need that broader coverage, Opera positions VPN Pro as its paid, device-wide alternative for up to six Windows, macOS, or Android devices.
What performance evidence says
TechRadar reported variable speeds for Opera’s free service and unsuccessful access to several streaming services in its tests. Those measurements reflect the publication’s locations, servers, and test dates; they are not a promise about every connection. Do not select Opera solely on the assumption that it will unlock a particular streaming catalog.

2. Firefox: useful free proxy with a strict allowance
Firefox’s built-in feature routes Firefox traffic through a secure proxy and masks the IP address websites see. Mozilla documents a 50 GB monthly allowance. When the allowance is exhausted, protection pauses until the next monthly reset. A Mozilla account is required.
Rollout and location checks
Mozilla says the feature is being rolled out progressively. Being in a listed country does not guarantee that your account is eligible. Mozilla also lists selectable exit locations, including the United States, Colombia, Germany, Japan, South Africa, and Australia, with more potentially added. Region eligibility and the list of exit locations are separate checks; verify both in Mozilla’s current support article.

Browser coverage is not device coverage
Mozilla explicitly says the built-in feature does not route other apps, downloads, or system data. Its separate Mozilla VPN product is the option Mozilla describes for whole-device coverage and unlimited use. A Firefox user who regularly downloads large files or needs protection in every application should therefore compare a device-wide service instead of treating the browser feature as a full VPN replacement.
3. Brave Firewall + VPN: paid, device-wide protection
Brave’s Firewall + VPN is a subscription rather than a free browser toggle. Brave says it protects the entire device, including activity outside Brave Browser, and that one subscription covers up to five devices across Android, iOS, and desktop. This makes it the more appropriate Brave choice when the requirement is system-wide coverage rather than only private browsing in Brave.

TechRadar’s reviewed version listed 40 regions, reported mixed streaming results, and referred to an independent third-party audit. Region counts, application support, and the scope of any audit are version-sensitive, so confirm them on Brave’s current product information before purchase. An audit or a vendor privacy statement should not be expanded into a promise of complete anonymity.
4. Aloha Browser: a secondary alternative, not a default recommendation
TechRadar described Aloha’s free mode as automatically choosing a server and disconnecting after the browser had been inactive for a period. The review also raised concerns about the service’s logging policy. Those are findings about the version and documentation examined by TechRadar, not settled facts about every Aloha release or configuration. If privacy policy detail is your deciding factor, read Aloha’s current policy directly before relying on the free mode.

How to choose the right built-in VPN
Choose browser-only coverage when
- You mainly want websites in one browser to see a different IP address.
- You understand that other apps and system traffic remain outside the tunnel.
- You prefer a free feature and can accept its account or data-cap requirements.
Choose device-wide protection when
- Downloads, messaging apps, games, or every browser also need coverage.
- You want unlimited use rather than Firefox’s 50 GB monthly allowance.
- You accept a subscription for broader routing and support.
Check privacy evidence carefully
- Separate a company’s no-logs or unlimited-use statement from independent verification.
- Read the privacy policy for collection, retention, account, and diagnostic details.
- Check what an audit covered, when it occurred, and whether it examined the VPN service itself.
Treat speed and streaming as variable
A browser VPN can add latency, and results differ by location, server load, protocol, and destination. The available independent comparison found inconsistent speeds and mixed or unsuccessful streaming access among reviewed browser VPNs. No option here should be advertised as a guaranteed way around a named streaming provider’s restrictions.

The feature can replace the IP address that participating websites see and encrypt the browser connection between you and the provider’s proxy or VPN infrastructure. It does not make you anonymous: websites can still identify accounts, cookies, browser characteristics, and activity you voluntarily submit. Browser-only protection also leaves non-browser traffic exposed. For public Wi-Fi, use HTTPS, keep the browser and operating system updated, and remember that a VPN does not protect you from phishing, malware, or an account compromise.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Setup checklist
- Install the browser from its official website or app store and update it fully.
- Open the browser’s privacy or VPN settings and read the stated coverage, data allowance, and account requirements.
- Enable the feature only after confirming whether it is opt-in and whether automatic public-Wi-Fi activation is available in your region.
- Check the displayed exit location and test a normal website; do not use a streaming result as proof of permanent access.
- For downloads or other applications, use a separately configured device-wide VPN rather than assuming the browser feature covers them.
Bottom line
Pick Opera for the simplest free, accountless browser-only option, subject to Opera’s own unlimited-use claim. Pick Firefox if its staged rollout reaches you and 50 GB per month is enough. Pick Brave Firewall + VPN or Opera VPN Pro when you need paid, whole-device coverage. None should be treated as a guarantee of anonymity or streaming access, and all availability, locations, limits, and subscription terms should be rechecked before signing up.
