If image thumbnails are blank or broken in Chrome, first check whether the problem affects one website or several. A single-site failure often points to that site or its image server; a broader failure calls for checking your Chrome profile, extensions, stored data, JavaScript, graphics settings, and network. Work through the steps below in order, starting with quick tests before changing settings.

First, find out where the problem is

Reload the page, then open a second site that normally displays images. Note whether images fail everywhere or only on one page. Google Chrome Help recommends checking another browser and comparing whether the issue is limited to a particular site. That comparison helps avoid changing Chrome settings when the site itself may be responsible.

  • Only one website is affected: the page, its image server, or a site-specific setting may be involved.
  • Several websites are affected in Chrome: investigate the browser profile, extensions, cache, settings, and network.
  • The same page also fails in another browser: consider a website or network problem rather than a Chrome-only problem.

Keep the failing page open while testing. If the problem is intermittent, reload it more than once and note whether the result changes; a one-time failure is less useful for identifying a persistent extension or setting conflict.

Use Incognito to isolate your normal Chrome profile

Open the affected page in an Incognito window. If its thumbnails appear there but not in your regular window, the contrast points toward something specific to the normal profile, such as an extension or stored site data. Incognito is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular cause: continue with the extension test below to narrow it down.

  1. Open the Chrome menu and choose New Incognito window.
  2. Visit the same page and check whether its thumbnails load.
  3. If they load in Incognito, return to a normal window and test extensions.

Find an extension conflict

Disable all extensions in the regular profile and reload the affected page. If the thumbnails return, turn extensions back on one at a time, reloading after each change. When the problem reappears, the most recently enabled extension is a likely conflict. Leave it disabled for that site or remove it if you do not need it. If disabling all extensions changes nothing, restore them and move on; do not assume an extension is responsible solely because Incognito behaves differently.

Clear cached images and site data

Old cached files or cookies and other site data can interfere with loading. Google’s image-search troubleshooting starts with private browsing and then recommends clearing cache and cookies; its general loading-error guidance also includes deleting cached images and files and cookies or site data.

  1. In Chrome, open the menu and go to Delete browsing data. You can also open Settings and use the search box for “Delete browsing data.”
  2. Choose a time range that covers when the problem began. If you are unsure, use All time.
  3. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
  4. Choose Delete data, then reload the affected page and check the thumbnails.

Clearing cookies and site data can sign you out of websites or reset site-specific state, so be prepared to sign in again. If you want to limit the change, use Chrome’s site-data controls for the affected website rather than deleting data for every site. Test the page after clearing; if it still fails, continue to JavaScript and rendering checks.

Confirm JavaScript is allowed for the affected site

Some pages rely on JavaScript to load or update image content. In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript and make sure the affected site is allowed to use JavaScript. If you see a site-specific block, change that permission to allow JavaScript, reload the page, and check again. Google lists JavaScript as a troubleshooting step for image-search failures.

If the site was already allowed, leave the setting as it is. Changing unrelated permissions will not help identify an image-loading problem and may give sites access you did not intend.

Test whether graphics acceleration is involved

A browser can load a page but fail to display it correctly if there is a hardware or software rendering problem. To test this, temporarily turn off Chrome’s hardware acceleration:

  1. Open Settings > System.
  2. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  3. Select Relaunch if Chrome offers it, or close and reopen Chrome.
  4. Load the affected page again and compare the result.

If thumbnails appear only with acceleration off, the comparison suggests a rendering-path problem. You can leave acceleration off as a workaround or turn it back on after testing; the setting affects how Chrome renders content, so check other pages and graphics-heavy tasks before deciding which state works better for your computer. If toggling it makes no difference, restore your preferred setting and continue.

Update Chrome and reduce resource pressure

An outdated browser, limited available memory, other software, or a demanding set of open tabs can contribute to loading failures. Google’s Chrome guidance includes outdated software and memory pressure among possible causes. Update Chrome through its About Chrome page in Settings, install any offered update, and restart the browser. If an update is waiting, use Chrome’s relaunch option to finish applying it.

  • Close tabs and applications you do not need, then retry the page.
  • Pause active downloads while testing.
  • If Chrome remains unreliable after an update, restart the computer and try again.

These steps are most informative when you change one thing at a time. If closing tabs makes no difference, that does not rule out a network or site problem; continue to the browser and network comparison rather than repeatedly closing and reopening the same tabs.

Check the network and compare another browser

If the page fails in Chrome and another browser, or multiple sites fail across browsers, focus on the website and network boundary. Google’s loading guidance says that if a page does not load in another browser, the issue could be with the network or the website itself. Check whether other sites load, and whether the affected page works on a different network if one is available.

Security software, a VPN, a proxy, or firewall rules can affect page requests. If you suspect one of them, compare the page with that service temporarily disconnected only if it is safe and permitted on your network; restore protections immediately after the test. On a work, school, or managed device, ask the network administrator before changing security or proxy settings. A site-only failure that follows the site across browsers is a reason to check the site’s status or contact its operator, not to broadly weaken device security.

Reset Chrome only after narrower tests fail

If the issue continues after the steps above, reset Chrome settings to their defaults. Google says the reset changes content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes; saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed.

  3. Review the confirmation and select Reset settings.
  4. Reopen the affected page and test before reinstalling Chrome.

A reset is broader than clearing one site’s data: it can affect preferences, permissions, extensions, and themes. If the problem disappears, reintroduce extensions or settings selectively rather than restoring everything at once. Reinstall Chrome only if the less disruptive checks and reset do not resolve the failure; Google lists reinstalling as a later step.

Quick troubleshooting map

What you observe What it suggests Next useful check
One site fails; other sites work A site-specific issue is more plausible than a browser-wide failure. Try another browser and check whether the site itself is having trouble.
Incognito works; normal window fails The normal profile may have an extension or stored-data conflict. Disable extensions, then re-enable them individually; clear relevant site data if needed.
Disabling extensions changes nothing An extension is less likely to explain the failure. Check cached data, JavaScript permission, and hardware acceleration.
Acceleration off changes the result The rendering path may be involved. Compare other pages and decide whether to keep the setting off.
Other browsers fail too The problem may be with the site or network, rather than Chrome alone. Compare sites and networks; check VPN, proxy, firewall, or security software carefully.

Use the table to choose the next test, not to treat a symptom as a certain diagnosis. A useful test changes one condition while leaving the page and network as similar as possible.

If you need to check how a public page looks in a captured image rather than fix Chrome on your device, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. A remote capture is a comparison, not a repair for a local Chrome profile or a guarantee that the page will work in your browser. Its capture options include PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its API accepts one GET request with a URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do thumbnails on Google Images fail when other images work?

Google’s image-search troubleshooting specifically includes checking JavaScript, alongside private browsing and clearing cache or cookies. Test those steps on the Google Images page before changing Chrome settings that affect every site.

Will resetting Chrome delete my saved bookmarks and passwords?

Google says Chrome’s reset-settings procedure does not delete or change saved bookmarks and passwords, though it does change settings such as content permissions, site data, extensions, and themes.

Should I reinstall Chrome as the first fix?

No. Reinstalling is a last escalation after comparing sites and browsers, testing Incognito, checking extensions and site data, and trying the settings reset.
