To make a website see a public IP address associated with another country, connect through a VPN server or proxy exit point in that country. For most people, a VPN is the simplest general-purpose option: select a country in the VPN app, connect, then check the public IP and the country an IP lookup service reports. This changes the apparent network origin, not your physical location, and does not guarantee a website will treat your connection as local.
How a country-specific IP address works
When your device connects directly to a website, the site typically receives your connection’s public IP address. A VPN or proxy routes the relevant traffic through an intermediary, so the destination sees that intermediary’s public IP instead. To appear to connect from another country, the exit point needs an IP that geolocation records associate with that country.
Cloudflare describes one proxy implementation that selects “an egress IP address from a pool registered to that geographic area.” That illustrates the mechanism, but it does not mean every VPN provider uses Cloudflare’s system. Cloudflare Privacy Proxy documentation

Use a VPN to route traffic through another country
- Choose a reputable VPN app that lists the country you need. Check the provider’s current server-location list; available countries, cities, protocols, and service availability can change.
- Install and open the app, then sign in or complete its setup.
- Select a server location in the target country and connect. The app should show that the connection is active.
- Check your public IP and its reported country using an IP lookup service. If the result does not match the selected country, disconnect and try another listed server, then check again.
- Open the destination service and see whether it accepts the connection. A country match in an IP lookup is not proof that the service considers you local.
What IP geolocation can—and cannot—tell you
IP geolocation is an estimate based on records associated with an IP range, not a reliable indicator of a person’s physical location. Cloudflare states that “There is nothing that inherently binds an IP address to a physical location or country.” IP allocations can change, and different geolocation databases can return different results. Accordingly, an IP lookup can confirm what country a particular database associates with your exit IP, but another site may use a different database or apply other access rules. The sources cited here do not establish the current location checks or VPN policy of any specific consumer website. Check that service’s current terms and applicable local requirements; do not rely on IP geolocation alone for precise or compliance-critical location decisions.
Proxy safety: understand whose connection is being used
A proxy forwards traffic through an intermediary so a website sees the intermediary’s IP. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center describes a residential proxy as “an intermediary server between individuals and websites they visit to make their connections appear to originate elsewhere.” Residential proxy networks may route through IP addresses assigned to ordinary consumer or IoT devices. The FBI warns that devices can be included with their owners’ consent or without their knowledge. Avoid installing software or enabling connection sharing unless you understand whether your device or internet connection could become part of such a network. When the other options make sense
Smart DNS
Smart DNS can route selected DNS requests for certain services, but it does not by itself give your device a different public IP. If the requirement is specifically for a country-associated public IP, use an IP-routing method such as a VPN or proxy instead. NordVPN Smart DNS FAQ
Remote access
If you need to use a computer or network located abroad, connect to that machine through an appropriate remote-access setup. Microsoft explains that a Remote Desktop client connected to a VPN acts as part of the same network. Internet traffic originating from the remote computer then uses that computer’s network connection. This is useful for accessing a particular work or home environment, but differs from choosing a consumer VPN endpoint in any country. Microsoft Remote Desktop guidance
