NordVPN is the best all-round VPN for Austria in the 2026 comparisons covered here, thanks to strong streaming results, speed testing and ease of use. Proton VPN is the better fit if privacy and a reliable Austrian IP are your priorities; Surfshark stands out for its broad device support and network size, while Mullvad is a specialist privacy choice.
Which VPN is best for Austria?
The right choice depends on whether you mainly want Austrian streaming access, a local IP address, privacy features or coverage across many devices. These four services serve different needs rather than making one choice best for every user.
| VPN | Best for | Austria and streaming evidence | Speed or network evidence | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Best overall | EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian testing reported reliable access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV. | TechRadar reported a tested peak of 1,256 Mbps in its 2026 review. This is that publisher’s test result, not a promised or typical connection speed. | TechRadar listed a promotional price of $3.09 per month in 2026; this is not an established renewal price. |
| Proton VPN | Privacy and Austrian IP access | Proton documents Austrian servers and promotes Austrian-IP streaming. EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian test reported reliable access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV. | EXP ERTE reported Proton VPN led its Austrian speed test; no numerical result is stated in the available comparison. | Not stated in the cited comparisons. |
| Surfshark | Broad device coverage and value | The cited 2026 comparison does not state an Austria-specific streaming test result. | Surfshark advertises 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. TechRadar reported a tested peak of 1,615 Mbps in 2026; that is a publisher-specific test result, not a typical-speed guarantee. | Not stated in the cited comparisons. |
| Mullvad | Privacy-focused specialist use | Independent Austria testing describes it as privacy-oriented, but does not establish the streaming breadth reported for NordVPN and Proton VPN. | The Austria comparison characterizes its network as relatively small; no numerical speed or server total is stated. | Not stated in the cited comparisons. |
These figures are not directly comparable lab results: the speed numbers come from TechRadar, while the Austria-specific ranking comes from EXP ERTE. A test peak does not predict the speed you will get on your own internet connection. The comparisons also do not provide a consistent set of renewal prices, so check the total term price and renewal terms at checkout rather than judging by a promotional monthly rate alone.
Choose NordVPN for a balanced everyday option
NordVPN is the clearest starting point if you want one service for ordinary browsing and streaming. TechRadar ranked it first overall in its 2026 review, and EXP ERTE reported reliable access to three Austrian services in its Austria testing. The evidence supports it as a broad-purpose pick, not as a guarantee that every service will work from every location.

Choose Proton VPN for privacy and Austrian-IP use
Proton VPN combines documented Austrian servers with WireGuard, open-source applications and third-party audits, according to Proton’s official Austria information. EXP ERTE also reported the strongest speed result among the VPNs it tested in Austria, as well as reliable access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV. No numerical speed result is stated, so the comparison supports the ranking but not a specific speed expectation.
Choose Surfshark for a large advertised network
Surfshark advertises more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries. TechRadar’s 2026 review reported a 1,615 Mbps tested peak and noted an independent infrastructure audit in January 2026. Those facts may help if broad network reach matters to you, but the cited evidence does not establish an Austria-specific streaming result.

Choose Mullvad when streaming breadth is secondary
Mullvad is described in independent Austria testing as privacy-oriented, with a relatively small server network, fewer features and weaker support. That makes it a niche choice for readers who prioritize its privacy focus over extensive streaming coverage, network size or support options.
How to get an Austrian IP address
To appear to browse from Austria, connect through a VPN server located in Austria. Having an Austrian IP does not by itself guarantee access to a particular site: streaming providers can change their VPN checks, and the cited tests reflect reported results at the time of those comparisons.

- Choose a VPN with Austrian servers. Proton VPN’s official Austria information documents Austrian servers. Confirm the server location in the provider’s current app or server list before subscribing.
- Install the provider’s app on the device you plan to use and sign in.
- Open the server or location list and select Austria. The exact app labels can vary by provider and app version.
- Connect, then check your IP location with a reputable IP lookup service if you need to confirm that the connection is routing through Austria.
- Open the intended Austrian site or app. If access fails, disconnect and reconnect to another Austrian server if available, then try again. A successful Austrian IP connection cannot guarantee that a streaming service will accept it.
Can you watch ORF TVthek and other Austrian services abroad?
EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian VPN testing reported that NordVPN and Proton VPN reliably accessed ORF, ServusTV and ATV. This is the most directly relevant comparison evidence for someone trying to watch Austrian services from abroad. It is not a permanent access guarantee: streaming platforms may alter their VPN detection, and results can differ by server, device and time.
Before relying on a VPN for a specific programme, check the service’s current availability and terms. A VPN changes the apparent network location; it does not grant programme rights or override the service’s rules.

Are VPNs legal in Austria?
Selectra’s Austria comparison says VPNs are legal in Austria and discusses WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 as relevant protocols. The available evidence does not include a primary Austrian government legal source, so treat that statement as a comparison site’s guidance rather than legal advice. Using a VPN does not make an otherwise unlawful activity lawful, nor does it remove copyright obligations or a streaming provider’s terms.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What to compare before subscribing
- Austrian server access: Check that Austria is available as a selectable location, especially if you need an Austrian IP rather than a connection to Austria’s neighbors.
- Streaming evidence: Give priority to recent tests naming the service you actually want to use. Reported access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV should not be generalized to every Austrian service.
- Privacy evidence: Proton documents open-source applications and third-party audits. Surfshark’s cited infrastructure audit is dated January 2026. These are distinct pieces of evidence; an audit does not mean every aspect of a provider has been independently verified.
- Protocol support: WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 are protocols identified in Selectra’s comparison. Proton’s official Austria page specifically documents WireGuard. Check the provider’s current app documentation for the protocols available on your device.
- Device and app fit: Install the app on your actual devices and check provider terms for simultaneous connections. The cited comparisons do not give a common device-limit figure.
- Total cost: Compare the full initial term and renewal amount shown before payment. The cited $3.09/month NordVPN figure is promotional, and the comparisons do not establish comparable renewal prices for these four services.
