The clearest way to get a still image from an iPhone video is to save the video frame in Photos, not to photograph or re-record the screen. Open the clip, pause on the frame you want, tap More, then choose Save Video Frame as Photo. The new image is added to your photo library.
If you have not recorded the clip yet, use the highest practical resolution and frame rate your iPhone offers, provide plenty of light, and keep the phone steady. Those choices determine how much detail exists in the source; no screenshot or editing method can recreate detail that motion blur, missed focus, or underexposure removed.
Save a clear frame from a video you already recorded
- Open Photos and select the video.
- Play the clip and pause when the subject is sharp and in the position you want.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then tap Save Video Frame as Photo.
- Return to your photo library to find the new still image.
This Photos command is designed to extract the frame itself. Scrubbing a little before and after the target moment can help you find a frame with less movement, but it cannot improve the detail recorded by the camera.

Apple does not publish a controlled sharpness comparison between these two workflows. Therefore, neither method should be promised to be universally sharper on every iPhone, video player, or playback context.
Take an ordinary screenshot when the screen matters
On Face ID iPhones, press and quickly release the side button and volume-up button together. On models with a Home button, press and quickly release the Home button and the side (or top) button. Screenshots appear in Photos under Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.
Why a screenshot from a video looks blurry
The source frame contains motion blur
A moving subject or a moving phone can smear details across several pixels during the exposure. Selecting a neighboring frame that shows less movement is usually more effective than enlarging the still afterward.
The scene was too dark
Low light makes it harder for the camera to record a clean, detailed frame. Bright, even illumination gives you more usable frames to choose from. Apple says Action mode works best in bright light, which is also a useful warning for any attempt to extract a still from stabilized action footage.

The subject was out of focus
If focus landed behind or in front of the subject, a screenshot faithfully preserves that soft frame. Cropping, sharpening, or changing the file format does not restore information the camera never recorded.
The selected moment is between sharp moments
Video contains many individual frames. Pause, advance or rewind slightly, and compare nearby frames before saving one. A frame in which the subject pauses—even for a fraction of a second—will generally be a better still than a frame taken during a fast gesture.
The display is being mistaken for the source
An ordinary screenshot captures the phone’s displayed screen. Player controls, a reduced preview, or a display-scale conversion can become part of that image. Use Save Video Frame as Photo when you want the frame rather than the complete interface.
Record better source video for future screenshots
Choose resolution in Camera
In Camera video mode, tap the resolution and frame-rate labels to see the choices available on your model. You can also open Settings > Camera > Record Video to review supported formats. Apple lists HD and 4K options on supported iPhones, but availability depends on the model and software.

Balance resolution, frame rate, and storage
Higher resolution records more pixels, while a faster frame rate gives you more moments to choose from during rapid action. Both increase file size. Pick a setting your iPhone supports and your available storage can accommodate; the largest number is not automatically the best choice for every subject.
Use stabilization appropriately
Keep the phone steady for a static subject. On supported iPhones, Action mode can reduce movement in handheld footage. Apple specifies a maximum Action mode capture resolution of 2.8K and says the feature works best in bright light. Verify that your particular iPhone supports it before relying on it.
Account for low-light frame rates
Apple documents Auto FPS options that can reduce recording to 24 frames per second in low-light situations to improve video quality. The exact menu choices vary by iPhone. Check Settings > Camera > Record Video rather than assuming every model exposes the same options.
Plan for the frame you will need
- Keep the important subject inside the frame with some margin for cropping.
- Use a steady grip or support when the shot is mostly static.
- Provide enough light to keep edges and textures defined.
- When reviewing the clip, inspect several adjacent frames before saving one.
Understand HDR screenshot settings
On supported iPhones, Settings > General > Screen Capture offers SDR or HDR capture. Apple documents SDR screenshots as PNG and HDR screenshots as HEIC. An HDR display is required to show the full brightness and color range; a standard display shows an HDR screenshot in SDR.

HDR is a brightness and color-format choice, not a sharpness setting. It does not add detail to a soft or blurred video frame. If the image will be shared with software or viewers that expect PNG, SDR may be the more compatible choice; use HDR when the receiving workflow and display support it.

“Save Video Frame as Photo” is missing
Confirm that you opened the clip in Photos and paused playback. The command’s availability depends on the Photos version and device. If it still does not appear, use the ordinary screenshot gesture as a fallback; that captures the displayed player, including any visible controls.
The saved image is still soft
Return to the video and check neighboring frames at the same moment. If every candidate is blurred, the limitation is in the original footage. Record a new clip with more light, less movement, or a supported stabilization mode rather than expecting an export setting to restore lost detail.
The screenshot includes controls or black bars
That is expected from a screen capture. Hide controls before capturing if the player permits it, or use Save Video Frame as Photo to obtain the frame without the interface.

HDR looks different on another device
Check whether the other display supports HDR. Apple says standard displays render HDR screenshots in SDR, so brightness and color may change even though the file itself has not been altered.
The video fills storage unexpectedly
Review the resolution and frame-rate setting in Settings > Camera > Record Video. Apple notes that higher resolutions and faster frame rates create larger files. Lower the setting when the extra detail or temporal resolution is not needed for the intended still.
A practical decision checklist
- Already have the clip? Open it in Photos and try Save Video Frame as Photo.
- Need the entire screen? Use the appropriate side/volume or Home-button screenshot gesture.
- Frame is blurry? Inspect adjacent frames; if none are sharp, improve the recording conditions next time.
- Recording again? Choose a supported resolution and frame rate, add light, and stabilize the phone.
- Sharing an HDR capture? Confirm that the destination supports HDR or choose SDR for broader compatibility.

Can saving a frame increase its resolution?
No. The saved photo contains the selected video frame; it does not create pixels that were absent from the recording.
Which frame rate should I use for every video?
There is no universal setting. Available choices depend on the iPhone, and faster rates increase file size. Choose based on subject motion, lighting, and storage.
Does Action mode work at the highest 4K setting?
Not necessarily. Apple documents a 2.8K maximum for Action mode, so verify the mode and resolution offered by your model before recording.
