Your channel must be verified for custom-thumbnail uploads. For Shorts, availability depends on your account and rollout status, so check the options shown in Studio.
Choose the right source image first
A thumbnail works only when its main subject is recognizable at a small size. Start with a frame that shows the result, person, product, or problem your video is about. A screenshot is useful for software tutorials, demonstrations, game footage, and before-and-after explanations; a separate photo may be better when the video depends on a face, object, or physical scene.
Capture at a useful resolution
Pause the video at the clearest moment and capture the source at its original or near-original resolution. Do not enlarge a tiny screenshot and treat the enlarged pixels as genuine detail. If the source is a browser page, maximize the useful content before capturing and avoid including unrelated tabs, desktop clutter, or notification banners.
Pick a frame with one visual idea
- Keep one dominant subject or interface area.
- Choose a moment with clear contrast between foreground and background.
- Leave safe space where a short title can be read without covering the subject.
- Remove cursor trails, private information, passwords, and temporary alerts before export.
These are production recommendations, not YouTube ranking rules. YouTube’s published specifications describe upload requirements, not a guaranteed click-through rate for any design.

| Use case | Recommended dimensions | Shape | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | Try for 16:9 | Minimum width 640 pixels; desktop upload limit listed as 50 MB; mobile video-thumbnail limit listed as 2 MB |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 pixels | Try for 9:16 | Desktop Shorts upload limit listed as 50 MB; mobile route availability and limits should be checked in Studio |
| Podcast playlist | Square artwork is recommended | 1:1 | Mobile podcast-thumbnail limit listed as 10 MB; desktop podcast uploads are listed at 50 MB |
The limits above are route-specific values listed by YouTube Help. Confirm the limit displayed for your account and device before exporting, because a file accepted on desktop may be too large for a mobile upload.
Why vertical videos need special care
YouTube warns that a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. For a Short, design a 9:16 image first and keep the essential subject near the center so cropping on other surfaces does not remove it.
Edit a screenshot or photo quickly
1. Crop before adding text
Open the capture in an image editor or thumbnail-layout tool. Set the canvas to 16:9 for a standard video, 9:16 for a Short, or 1:1 for podcast artwork. Crop out browser chrome, black bars, and empty margins before placing any labels.
2. Build a simple visual hierarchy
Use one short promise, question, or contrast rather than copying the whole video title. Make the subject larger than decorative elements. A solid or lightly darkened area behind text improves legibility; do not cover the screenshot detail that proves what the video is about.
3. Check the thumbnail at small size
Zoom out until the image is approximately the size viewers will see in a feed. If the face, product, or key interface control disappears, recrop or simplify. Check both light and dark surroundings if your editor offers a preview.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
4. Export and inspect the file
- Use JPG when a photographic frame needs a smaller file.
- Use PNG when sharp interface text or transparency matters and the file remains within the upload limit.
- Verify pixel dimensions, file extension, and file size after export.
- Open the exported file once to catch a blank canvas, unexpected crop, or missing font.
Upload a custom thumbnail for a standard video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a verified account.
- Open Content.
- Select the video you want to edit.
- In the Thumbnail area, choose the option to upload an image from your device.
- Select the prepared JPG or PNG and wait for the preview.
- Save the video changes.
YouTube may also show suggested thumbnail options in this workflow. Allow time for a saved change to appear everywhere; a delayed preview does not necessarily mean the upload failed.
Upload or choose a thumbnail for a Short
YouTube Help says custom image uploads for Shorts are currently available through YouTube Studio on a computer and require a verified account. A July 24, 2026 YouTube announcement says YouTube Partner Program creators can begin uploading custom Shorts thumbnails, with access expanding over time. Because those descriptions use different eligibility wording, rely on the controls actually available in your Studio account.
Desktop choices
The July 24, 2026 announcement says creators can choose among three suggested Shorts frames on desktop. If your account exposes custom upload, prepare a 9:16 image and use the thumbnail control in the Short’s Studio details.
Mobile choices
The same announcement says the YouTube app lets creators choose any frame from the video. A frame selection is different from uploading a separately designed image, so decide whether the exact frame or your edited artwork better represents the Short.
Use YouTube’s built-in suggestions when speed matters
For long-form videos, YouTube’s July 24, 2026 announcement describes Ask Studio generating thumbnail suggestions and accepting follow-up requests to adjust elements such as colors and layouts. This is optional: you can still upload your own screenshot-based design. Suggestions save editing time, while a prepared image gives you direct control over the crop, wording, and branding. Neither source establishes a guaranteed performance improvement.

Common problems and fixes
The upload control is missing
Verify the channel and confirm that you are signed in to the intended account. Custom-thumbnail uploads require verification. For Shorts, availability can depend on the current rollout, platform, and account eligibility; check Studio on a computer and review the options shown there.

Check whether you are uploading from mobile or desktop. YouTube lists a 2 MB mobile limit for video thumbnails and a 50 MB desktop limit for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails; mobile podcast thumbnails are listed at 10 MB. Re-export as a quality-controlled JPG, reduce unnecessary dimensions, or switch to the route with the applicable limit.
The crop looks wrong on Home
For vertical content, a 16:9 image can be replaced by an automatic 4:5 thumbnail on some mobile surfaces. Rebuild the artwork as 9:16 and keep the essential information in the central safe area.
Text is unreadable
Reduce the number of words, enlarge the type, increase contrast, and remove background detail behind the lettering. Preview at small size before uploading rather than judging only on a large editing canvas.
The saved image is not visible immediately
Wait for YouTube to process and propagate the change, then refresh Studio and the video page. If the old image remains after processing, confirm that you saved the correct video and uploaded the intended file.

You hit a daily limit
YouTube says daily custom-thumbnail limits can vary by country or region and channel history. Copyright strikes may affect eligibility history, while Community Guidelines strikes affect how many thumbnails can be uploaded. Avoid repeatedly uploading near-identical files while troubleshooting; wait for the limit to reset and resolve any account issue shown in Studio.
Follow YouTube’s thumbnail policies
Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube gives nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection and a strike. Repeat offenses can remove custom-thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination. Review the image at full size for accidental suggestive crops, graphic scenes, hateful symbols, or dangerous instructions before you upload it.
Automate the screenshot step
If the source is a public web page rather than a local video frame, an API can produce a repeatable image for your editing workflow. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try when you need clean captures: it accepts consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Or skip the browser setup
Use one GET request to turn a URL into a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The parameter names used by many other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the complete option list.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you need, then crop or annotate the returned image in your editor. ScreenshotNeo can also capture a full page with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selected element, a chosen device or viewport, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, selector or network-idle waits, blocked ads and trackers, custom headers and cookies, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and PDF settings such as paper size, margins, landscape, and page ranges. Every plan includes these features.

Make the workflow reliable for repeated uploads
Keep an original and an upload copy
Save the untouched screenshot or photo separately from the cropped thumbnail. Keep an upload copy with the final dimensions, compression, and text so you can revise the design without degrading the original.
Use a naming convention
Names such as video-042-thumbnail-v3-16x9.jpg make it clear which episode, revision, and format you are uploading. This prevents a Shorts image from being attached to a long-form video.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check every destination surface
Preview standard videos in 16:9 and Shorts in 9:16, then inspect the central crop for mobile surfaces. If the image contains a small interface screenshot, test whether its labels remain legible without zooming.
Do not confuse compliance with performance
A correct file can still perform differently from another design because of audience, topic, title, distribution, and timing. The official specifications and feature announcements do not provide a named performance statistic proving that a particular color, font, screenshot style, or layout increases views or clicks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a thumbnail entirely from a video screenshot?
Yes. Capture a clear frame, crop it to the video’s format, add any necessary text or graphics, export a JPG or PNG within the route’s size limit, and upload it through YouTube Studio if your verified account has custom-thumbnail access.
What is the safest format for a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
Prepare a 9:16 image at YouTube’s recommended 2160 × 3840 pixels, keep essential content near the center, and confirm that custom upload is available for your account and current Shorts rollout.
Does YouTube guarantee more views from a custom thumbnail?
No. YouTube’s published specifications and feature announcements do not establish a performance guarantee or a specific design that increases clicks.
