What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The right fix depends on how you captured the image. Snipping Tool has its own automatic-save and default-folder settings. Screenshots made with Windows + PrtSc normally go to PicturesScreenshots, which can be relocated through that folder’s Location properties. A plain PrtSc press copies an image to the clipboard instead of creating a file. OneDrive backup is a separate choice: it backs up Pictures rather than replacing every capture destination.
Identify the shortcut or app you used
Windows has several screenshot paths, and they do not share one universal destination. Use this table before changing anything:
| Capture method | What normally happens | Where to change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool or Windows + Shift + S | The image opens in Snipping Tool. Depending on its settings, it may be saved automatically. | Snipping Tool > See More > Settings; use Save as for an individual copy. |
| Windows + PrtSc | Windows saves a file under PicturesScreenshots. | Move the Screenshots known folder through File Explorer’s Location tab. |
| PrtSc by itself | The screen image is copied to the clipboard; no new file is required. | Paste into an app such as Paint, then save where you choose. |
| OneDrive folder backup | Pictures, including its Screenshots subfolder, can be synchronized to OneDrive. | OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup; select Pictures. |
The labels and behavior described here apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although Snipping Tool controls can change with app updates.
Change the Snipping Tool screenshot folder
This is the most direct route when your captures come from Snipping Tool, including the Windows + Shift + S overlay.

- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (the three-dot menu), then choose Settings.
- Change the automatic-save behavior or the default Screenshots folder to the location you want. The available wording can differ slightly between app releases.
- Capture a small test image and verify that the file appears in the selected folder.
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance specifically places the automatic-save and default-folder controls under See More > Settings. This setting concerns Snipping Tool captures; it does not automatically redirect files created by every keyboard shortcut.
Save one Snipping Tool capture somewhere else
To keep the default unchanged but store a particular image elsewhere, open the capture in Snipping Tool, select Save as, choose a folder and filename, and save. This creates an additional copy rather than changing the app’s default destination.
Move the Windows + PrtSc destination
Microsoft identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the normal location for screenshots saved with Windows + PrtSc. The following folder-relocation procedure is community guidance published in Microsoft Q&A, not a current step-by-step Microsoft Support article, so the exact tabs can vary by Windows configuration.
- Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots. If your Pictures folder is already under OneDrive, the path shown on your computer may be different.
- Right-click Screenshots and choose Properties.
- Open the Location tab and select Move.
- Choose or create the destination folder, then apply the change.
- If Windows asks whether to move the existing files, choose Yes only if you want older screenshots moved as well. Choose No to leave them in the old location.
- Press Windows + PrtSc once and check the new folder for the test image.
If the Location tab is missing, the folder is not treated as a movable known folder on that installation, or Windows reports an access error, do not edit the registry based on generic online instructions. Use Snipping Tool’s own folder setting for Snipping Tool captures, and use Save as when you need a specific destination.

Use OneDrive when the goal is backup
OneDrive’s former Save screenshots to OneDrive switch is no longer available. Microsoft’s current approach is to include the Pictures folder in OneDrive folder backup. This is cloud synchronization, not a universal redirect for every screenshot method.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area.
- Open OneDrive Settings.
- Go to Sync and backup and open the folder-backup controls.
- Enable backup for Pictures, then allow OneDrive to complete its setup.
Afterward, screenshots stored inside Pictures can appear in the backed-up Pictures tree. If your local destination is outside Pictures, OneDrive’s Pictures backup does not automatically include it; add that folder through a supported OneDrive workflow or continue using local storage.
Find a screenshot that seems to be missing
You pressed PrtSc alone
Press Ctrl + V in Paint, an image editor, an email, or another compatible app. Then use that app’s save command and select the folder and file type you want. A clipboard capture will not necessarily produce a file in Pictures.
You used Windows + Shift + S
The selection opens in Snipping Tool. Look for the app’s save notification or open Snipping Tool and check See More > Settings to confirm automatic saving. If automatic saving is disabled, use Save as on the open capture.

You used Windows + PrtSc
Start at Pictures > Screenshots, including the Pictures path shown under OneDrive if folder backup is enabled. Sort by date and take a new test capture so you can distinguish the current destination from older files.
You expected OneDrive to contain it
Confirm that Pictures is selected under OneDrive’s Settings > Sync and backup. A screenshot saved to a different local folder will not be covered merely because OneDrive is installed.
The keyboard shortcut does nothing
Check that the keyboard’s PrtSc key is sending the expected signal; some compact keyboards require an Fn combination. As a diagnostic, open Snipping Tool from Start and capture a region with the mouse. If that works, the issue is shortcut or keyboard configuration rather than the destination folder.
Choose the route that matches your goal
| Your goal | Use this route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Put Snipping Tool files in a new local folder | Snipping Tool > See More > Settings | Does not redirect Windows + PrtSc files. |
| Put Windows + PrtSc files in a new local folder | Screenshots folder > Properties > Location > Move | The procedure is Microsoft Q&A community guidance; the Location tab may not be available. |
| Keep screenshots in the cloud | OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Pictures | Backup is separate from choosing a local destination. |
| Choose a different place for one image | Snipping Tool or another editor > Save as | Changes only that copy, not future defaults. |
Or skip the browser setup
If what you really need is an automated image of a public web page—not a Windows desktop capture—ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one API request. It does not change your Windows folders; it is a separate way to capture URLs in scripts, build jobs, or AI-agent workflows. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Files still appear in PicturesScreenshots: you are probably using Windows + PrtSc, which is separate from Snipping Tool’s setting. Relocate the Screenshots known folder or change the shortcut workflow.
- Snipping Tool saves nothing: review automatic-save behavior under See More > Settings, then use Save as for the current image.
- Moving the folder created duplicates: Windows may have left old files when you selected No during the move prompt. This is expected; copy or move those files manually if desired.
- OneDrive shows an old path: check whether Pictures backup is enabled and whether Pictures itself was previously relocated. OneDrive mirrors the configured folder structure; it does not infer every custom screenshot folder.
- Access denied while moving: choose a folder you own, close applications that may be using the directory, and retry. If the Location tab is unavailable, use Snipping Tool’s setting or Save as instead of registry changes.
FAQ
Can I assign different folders to different screenshot shortcuts?
Windows does not provide one built-in control that independently maps every shortcut to an arbitrary folder. Snipping Tool has its own destination behavior, while Windows + PrtSc follows the Screenshots known folder; use Save as when you need per-image control.
