To save a YouTube thumbnail, get the video’s ID, place it in YouTube’s thumbnail URL, open that URL, and save the image from your browser. For the usual high-resolution request, use https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg. Because a maximum-resolution file is not available for every video, keep a lower-resolution URL or the URL returned by the YouTube Data API as a fallback.
Save a YouTube thumbnail in four steps
- Copy the video URL. A normal watch link looks like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID. The value afterv=is the video ID. In a shortened link such ashttps://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID, the video-specific path segment is the ID. - Build the image URL. Replace
VIDEO_IDinhttps://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpgwith the actual ID. For WebP, usehttps://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp. - Open the URL. Paste it into a new browser tab. You should see the thumbnail as an image rather than a YouTube watch page.
- Save the image. On a computer, right-click (or Control-click) the image and choose the browser’s save-image command. On a phone or tablet, press and hold the image, then choose the browser’s save or share action.
The filename and download folder are controlled by your browser. Saving the file gives you a copy; it does not by itself give you permission to republish it.
Find the correct video ID
Standard watch URLs
In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc123XYZ, the ID is abc123XYZ. Copy only the value after v=, not the question mark, ampersand, or any other parameters. If the address has additional settings, stop the ID at the next &.
Shortened URLs
In https://youtu.be/abc123XYZ, the ID is the path segment after the domain. Remove any trailing query string before putting the ID into the image URL.

Check before you save
- The ID must be copied exactly, including uppercase and lowercase characters.
- Do not paste the entire watch URL where
VIDEO_IDbelongs. - If the resulting address redirects, shows a generic placeholder, or returns an error, recheck the ID first.
Choose the best thumbnail URL
Maximum-resolution request
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg requests YouTube’s maximum-resolution JPEG variant. It is a request, not a guarantee: some videos do not have that variant, so the address may fail or display a placeholder.
WebP alternative
https://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.webp requests the corresponding WebP form. WebP can be smaller than JPEG, but an editor, CMS, or older application may require you to convert it before use.
When the maximum variant is unavailable
Try a lower-resolution thumbnail URL using the same video ID and a lower variant name, or use the URL returned by the YouTube Data API. A lower-resolution file is preferable to a stretched placeholder. Do not upscale a small image and expect details that were never delivered.
Use the YouTube Data API when the URL must be reliable
For a programmatic workflow, the YouTube Data API is the dependable fallback because its video resource includes a thumbnail URL and may include that image’s width and height. The API’s default thumbnail is typically 120 × 90 pixels, although the sizes available for a particular video vary.

What an API client should do
- Request the video resource for the known video ID and include the thumbnail fields.
- Read the thumbnail object returned by YouTube instead of assuming that a maximum-resolution file exists.
- Use the returned URL and record the supplied dimensions before downloading.
- Handle a missing size or URL as an unavailable variant, not as permission to invent dimensions.
This approach adds API credentials, quota management, and response parsing, but it avoids hard-coding a resolution that may not exist. It is the better choice for a service that processes many videos or needs to display the actual dimensions to users.

Save thumbnails with a script
A script can download a known direct URL after you have verified that it points to the intended video. Always check the HTTP response and file type in production; a successful request can still return a placeholder or an HTML error page if the URL is wrong.

Copyright, licensing, and YouTube rules
Downloading an image and having the right to publish it are separate questions. YouTube explains that an original work, such as a video, is usually automatically protected by its creator’s copyright. The standard YouTube license is the default setting for uploads; a creator may instead select Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY).
Before republishing
- Ask the creator for permission when the video is under the standard license and you want to use the thumbnail outside ordinary private reference.
- If the video is marked CC BY, follow the license and provide the required attribution.
- Check whether a copyright exception or public-domain rule actually applies in your country; do not assume that a thumbnail is free because it is visible on a public page.
- Review YouTube’s Terms of Service before reproducing, distributing, displaying, selling, licensing, altering, or modifying content. Those actions are restricted unless YouTube permits them, the rights holder authorizes them, or applicable law allows them.
A thumbnail can also violate YouTube policy if it is misleading, sexually explicit, graphic, or otherwise prohibited. A saved file does not change those policy considerations.
Embedding thumbnails in an application
If your application uses YouTube’s APIs or embeds, YouTube’s developer policy requires metadata such as the thumbnail and title to remain visible and unmodified. A custom play button is acceptable only when tapping it starts playback. Do not crop, redraw, or obscure the metadata in a way that changes its meaning.

The URL shows an error or a generic image
Confirm that you copied only the video ID and that its capitalization is unchanged. Then try a lower-resolution variant. If the maximum file is not available for that video, use the thumbnail URL and dimensions returned by the YouTube Data API.

A lower variant may be the highest file YouTube exposes for that video. Check the image’s actual dimensions before enlarging it. Upscaling cannot restore detail that was not present in the source.

The browser downloads WebP but my editor needs JPEG
Use the JPEG endpoint, https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, or convert the saved WebP with an image editor that preserves the needed dimensions.
My script saved an HTML page instead of an image
Check the HTTP status, content type, and file signature before writing the file. A malformed ID, unavailable variant, redirect, or service error can produce a response that is not a usable image.
Can I publish the saved thumbnail?
Not automatically. Confirm the creator’s permission, a CC BY license and its attribution terms, a valid copyright exception, or public-domain status before publication. Also check YouTube’s content and developer policies for the way you intend to display it.
The Bottom Line
Use the video’s ID to construct the i.ytimg.com URL, save the image from your browser, and switch to a lower variant or the YouTube Data API when maxresdefault is unavailable. Treat the downloaded file and the right to republish it as separate issues.
