To generate daily website screenshots, separate the workflow into five parts: run a recurring job, open the target with fixed browser conditions, wait for the content that matters, capture the viewport, full page or a selected element, and write the image to storage under a date-based key. Playwright can save a file or return image bytes; a hosted service such as Cloudflare Browser Run can render a URL or HTML and return an image. The scheduler and archive policy remain your responsibility whichever renderer you choose.
1. Define what each daily screenshot should contain
Decide the capture scope before writing code. Changing scope between runs makes visual comparisons unreliable.
Viewport capture
A viewport screenshot records only what is visible at a chosen width and height. Use it for a dashboard above the fold, a landing-page hero, or a fixed visual regression target.
Full-page screenshot
A full-page screenshot includes the scrollable document below the fold. It is appropriate for an entire article or long marketing page. Lazy-loaded images and content that appears only after scrolling must be allowed to load before capture.

Element capture
Capture a single component when the whole page is noisy. A CSS selector such as [data-testid="price-card"] can isolate a price panel, status badge or chart. Playwright documents page and element screenshots, while Browser Run exposes selector and full-page controls in its screenshot endpoint (Cloudflare screenshot endpoint).
2. Make rendering repeatable
A daily archive is useful only when differences reflect the site rather than your capture environment. Keep these values deliberate and stable:
- Viewport width and height, device scale factor and color scheme.
- Whether the capture is viewport, full page or a selector.
- Navigation timeout and the condition that means the page is ready.
- Locale, timezone, user agent, cookies and authentication state.
- Whether animations, rotating carousels or personalized content are disabled.
Dynamic content, consent dialogs, late-loading assets and personalization can change pixels even when the site has not materially changed. If you need a clean comparison, use a test account or stable cookies and hide known transient elements with CSS or a locator.
3. Capture with Playwright
Install Playwright in a small Node.js project, then install its browser binaries:

npx playwright install chromiumThe following script captures a full page, waits for a meaningful selector, and stores the image under an ISO-date key. It can also return bytes for an object-storage SDK instead of writing locally.

4. Schedule the job every day
Playwright does not provide a built-in daily scheduler. Run the script from the scheduler supplied by your environment.

Linux cron
Run at 02:00 UTC each day and append logs:

In containers or serverless runtimes, configure the platform’s scheduled-job feature instead. Whichever scheduler you select, set a timeout longer than the browser’s navigation timeout and ensure only one run can write the same key at once.
Retries and missed runs
Retry transient network failures with a bounded policy, such as two attempts separated by a short delay. Do not overwrite a successful image with a failed placeholder. Record status, timestamp, URL and error text beside the image so an absent day is distinguishable from an unchanged page.
5. Store images under predictable keys
A date-oriented key makes retrieval and comparison straightforward. One example is:

site-id/YYYY/MM/DD/viewport-1440x900.pngThis naming convention is an example, not a provider requirement. Include the target identifier, capture scope and format when you monitor more than one page. Store metadata separately (JSON or database row) with the requested URL, UTC timestamp, viewport, selector, renderer version and result status.

Local files
Local disk is adequate for a small archive, but configure filesystem permissions and a lifecycle task. Keep the capture directory outside a publicly served web root unless public access is intended.
Object storage
Upload the returned bytes to your chosen object store and apply its retention, encryption and access controls. Generate private, time-limited download links for reviewers rather than making the entire bucket public. Decide how many days to retain, whether legal or audit requirements apply, and how to delete old objects automatically.
Cloudflare KV example
Cloudflare’s Browser Run getting-started guide demonstrates navigating to a URL, taking a screenshot and storing the result in KV (Cloudflare Browser Run getting started). KV is one possible destination; verify its current size, consistency and lifecycle characteristics for your archive before adopting it.
6. Hosted rendering versus a self-managed browser

Cloudflare’s Quick Actions FAQ also states that generated output is cached by default for five seconds, configurable up to one day or disabled. That cache setting concerns the Quick Action, not your own retention policy (Cloudflare Browser Run FAQ).

The image is blank or only partly rendered
Wait for a content-specific selector rather than relying solely on load. Increase the navigation timeout, confirm the page works from the job’s network, and allow lazy images to load before a full-page capture.
A cookie dialog or chat widget changes the comparison

Every run has a different height
Use full-page mode consistently and investigate expanding accordions, rotating content or late font loads. A fixed viewport alone does not make a full-page document deterministic.
The scheduler reports success but no file exists
Use absolute paths, create the destination directory, check the process user’s permissions and log the final key only after the write or upload succeeds. Keep a metadata record for failures.

Requests time out or hit a bot check
Verify the URL, DNS and outbound access from the runtime. Use an appropriate user agent, authentication headers or cookies only when authorized. Treat a bot challenge as a failed capture; do not archive it as if it represented the page.
9. Operational checklist
- Choose viewport, full-page or element scope.
- Fix viewport, scale, locale, timezone and authentication state.
- Wait for the actual content, not just a network event.
- Use a deterministic key containing site and UTC date.
- Save image bytes and metadata atomically.
- Configure retries, alerts and a lock against overlapping runs.
- Set archive retention, encryption and reader permissions.
- Periodically open stored files to verify they are readable.
