Start with your operating system’s Downloads folder, then check the browser’s download history for the exact filename and location. The exception is a deliberate save operation—such as Safari’s Web Archive or Chrome’s “Save as PDF”—where you choose a destination in a dialog.
This guide shows where Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Safari put captures, how to recover a file when you do not know its name, and how to avoid losing future screenshots.
First check: Downloads and the browser’s history
Open the operating system’s Downloads folder and sort by Date Modified. Search for recent files ending in .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .webp, .pdf, .html, .htm, .webarchive or .mhtml. A browser screenshot is normally not stored in a hidden browser database; it is saved as a local file.
If the folder is crowded, open the browser’s downloads list. Select the item and use its file menu (often labelled Show in folder, Open containing folder or similar). This is more reliable than guessing a path because download settings can be changed, and some browsers ask for a destination every time.

When Downloads is not the answer
- You enabled “Ask where to save each file” and selected another folder.
- You used a Save dialog and typed a different name or location.
- The capture was printed to PDF, in which case the system print dialog controls the destination.
- An administrator policy, portable browser profile or cloud-folder setting changed the default path.
Menu labels and shortcuts can vary by browser version, operating system and device type. Treat the paths below as defaults, not guarantees.
Firefox: Developer Tools screenshots
Firefox’s Developer Tools screenshot command can capture an entire page or a selected element. Mozilla documents that the result is saved to the browser’s Downloads directory.
Find a Firefox capture
- Open your operating system’s Downloads folder.
- Search for files beginning with
Screenshot. Firefox Help documents a name pattern likeScreenshot year-month-day at hour-minute-second Page title.png. - If you still cannot see it, open Firefox’s downloads list and reveal the file in its containing folder.
- Sort by modification time if several captures were made close together.
Firefox uses the same folder as its normal download location. If that location was changed in Firefox settings, the screenshot follows the new location.
Capture scope and format
Developer Tools can capture the visible page, an entire page or an individual element, depending on the command and the current Firefox version. The documented default filename is a PNG image. A full-page image may be much taller than the viewport, so image viewers and file previews can appear blank until the file finishes opening.

Chrome: screenshots, saved pages and PDFs
Chrome downloads go to a configurable default folder. Google’s documented defaults are:

These are defaults only. In Chrome, open Settings > Downloads to see the current folder. The download tray and the Downloads page list recent files; the item menu can show the file in its folder.
If you used “Save Page As”
Chrome’s More > More Tools > Save Page As command opens a save dialog. The resulting HTML file and, depending on the selected save type, a companion resource folder are placed wherever you chose. Search for .html or .htm, not only image files.
If you created a PDF
Use Print, select Save as PDF, and complete the system print dialog. The print dialog—not necessarily Chrome’s Downloads setting—determines the destination and filename. Search for recently modified .pdf files if you dismissed the dialog without noting the folder.

Chrome recovery checklist
- Open Chrome’s Downloads page and locate the capture.
- Use the item menu to reveal its containing folder.
- If it is absent, inspect Settings > Downloads and any folder selected by “Ask where to save each file.”
- Search your home directory for the extensions
.png,.jpg,.pdf,.htmland.mhtml, sorted by date.
Microsoft Edge: Screenshot tool
Edge’s Screenshot tool can capture a selected area or an entire webpage, including content that extends beyond the visible screen. Microsoft documents the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S. After the capture, Edge lets you mark it up before saving.
Locate an Edge screenshot
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+S(or open Edge’s Screenshot command) and choose the full-page or selected-area mode. - After marking up, choose Save.
- Check the destination shown by the save dialog. If Edge is configured to download automatically, inspect the Downloads folder and Edge’s download history.
- Search for recent image files if you changed the filename.
Because Edge can present a save dialog, there is no single universal path for every capture. The location you selected at save time is authoritative.
Safari on Mac: Web Archive versus Page Source
Safari’s File > Save As command offers Web Archive and Page Source. A Web Archive saves the page’s graphics and keeps links working while the destination pages remain available. Page Source saves only the HTML source.
Find a Safari saved page
- Choose File > Save As in Safari.
- Note the folder shown in the Save dialog before confirming.
- Search that folder—or your usual Downloads folder or Desktop—for
.webarchiveor.html. - Use Finder’s Date Modified column when the exact filename is unknown.
Safari does not silently force every saved page into Downloads; the user-selected folder controls the result. A Web Archive is not the same as a screenshot image: it is a packaged saved page whose external links still depend on those destinations being available.

Search by extension, time and filename
When the browser history has been cleared or the item was renamed, use a broad file search. Set the time range to when you made the capture, sort by modification date, and search each relevant extension:
- Images:
.png,.jpg,.jpeg,.webp - Documents:
.pdf - Saved webpages:
.html,.htm,.webarchive,.mhtml
Firefox screenshot names start with Screenshot, which makes a filename search especially effective. Chrome and Edge may use the page title, a custom name or a generated name, so extension and date searches are safer.
Check the obvious alternate locations
- Your Desktop, if you selected it in a save dialog.
- A project folder or cloud-synchronized Downloads folder.
- An external drive or network location chosen in the dialog.
- Trash/Recycle Bin, if the file was deleted after saving.
Why a full-page capture may look missing
A full-page image can be very tall and take longer to write than a viewport screenshot. Wait for the browser’s download or save indicator to finish before closing the tab. If the page contains lazy-loaded images, the capture may include placeholders because the browser captured before those resources appeared. Repeating the capture after scrolling through the page can change what is loaded.
Large PDFs and Web Archives can also take time to finish. Do not infer that a file failed merely because a preview is slow; verify the file size and open it in an application that supports its format.

Troubleshooting: symptom, cause and fix

- For repeatable jobs, record the URL, viewport, output format and destination naming convention so files can be found later.
