If Snipping Tool seems to keep taking screenshots, first determine whether it is actually starting new captures or whether one capture is appearing in more than one place. Microsoft documents several ways to start a snip and says captured images are copied to the Snipping Tool window and automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. Its general guide does not identify a known recurring-screenshot defect or a universal repair. The practical fix is to check the timing, capture delay and possible keyboard input, then isolate the keyboard if the evidence points to it.
First, check whether new screenshots are really being taken
A single capture can produce more than one visible result. Microsoft says an image snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window and automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. The app’s auto-save behavior and default folder can be changed in its settings. So seeing an image in the app and a corresponding file does not, by itself, mean Snipping Tool captured the screen twice. See Microsoft’s instructions for using Snipping Tool.
Before changing anything, compare the actual images and their timestamps. A succession of distinct files with different contents is stronger evidence of repeated capture events than seeing the same image in two places. Note whether every file has a different timestamp, whether the images show different screen content, and whether the apparent repetition happens only in the app, only in the folder, or in both.
- Same image in the app and Screenshots folder: this may be the normal copy-and-save behavior for one snip.
- Several files with different contents or capture times: investigate what could be starting new captures.
- More than one copy in a location: compare contents and timestamps before concluding that the capture trigger repeated.
Changing where captures are saved can make files appear in a different place, but it does not establish what initiated a capture or stop a repeated trigger.

What can start a Snipping Tool capture?
Microsoft documents Windows logo key + Shift + S as a shortcut that opens the snipping overlay, and PrtSc as a way to take a full-screen snapshot. When Snipping Tool is open, Alt + N starts a new snip in the same mode. These are useful clues when you are trying to match a screenshot to a key press or another input source; they are not proof that a particular device or app is causing your problem.
Think about when the captures occur:
- Immediately after pressing a key: test whether the shortcut matches Windows + Shift + S, PrtSc, or Alt + N.
- At a regular interval or while you are hands-off: check the configured capture delay and test whether input might be arriving without an intentional key press.
- Only while Snipping Tool is open: note that pattern, and test the delay setting and keyboard input while observing the app.
- After using another app or device feature: consider whether a keyboard utility, macro, remapping tool or other app could be sending a shortcut. This is a possibility to test, not a documented Microsoft diagnosis.
Microsoft’s shortcut documentation establishes that these keys can start a capture; it does not establish that a stuck key, macro, mouse utility or background application is behind any particular case of repeated screenshots.

How to diagnose repeated screenshots, step by step
- Observe one episode before changing settings. Note the time, whether Snipping Tool is open, whether you are touching the keyboard, and whether the event begins after a key press. Check the Screenshots folder and compare file timestamps and image contents. This tells you whether you are seeing separate captures or multiple outputs from one capture.
- Check the delay. Open Snipping Tool and inspect its Delay setting. Microsoft documents a delay range of 1–5 seconds; it is intended to give you time to prepare screen content, such as a menu, before selecting a capture area. If the repeated action happens on a similar schedule, turn off or stop using the delay for a test and observe whether that timing pattern changes. A matching interval is a clue to investigate, not confirmation of a defect.
- Test the documented shortcuts deliberately. During a short observation, note whether an apparent capture follows Windows + Shift + S, PrtSc, or Alt + N. Do not assume every screenshot is caused by one of these shortcuts: the documentation describes capture actions but does not identify the cause of an unexplained event.
- Consider other sources of key input. If screenshots appear while you are not intentionally pressing a shortcut, check whether a keyboard macro, remapping tool, mouse utility or other app may be sending input. Change or pause only one suspected source at a time, then observe whether the pattern changes. Treat this as a diagnostic experiment, not an official Microsoft repair procedure.
- Isolate the keyboard if the pattern points to it. Disconnect the original keyboard and observe the computer without it. If practical, compare that result with a spare keyboard connected. Keep the same observation conditions as much as possible. If the behavior stops only when the original keyboard is disconnected, investigate its PrtSc key or its configuration; the test narrows the possibilities but does not prove a specific hardware fault.
- Record the result before escalating. Write down the Windows version and build, Snipping Tool app version, approximate capture interval, whether its window was open, whether each image was distinct, and what happened during the keyboard test. These details make the symptom more specific than saying only that screenshots keep appearing.
How to interpret the keyboard test
The useful comparison is whether new captures continue under different input conditions. This is a proposed troubleshooting test, not a controlled test or a guaranteed repair.
| Observation condition | What to note | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Original keyboard disconnected | Whether distinct new screenshots continue during the observation | If they stop, the keyboard or its configuration becomes a candidate to investigate. It does not identify the exact cause. |
| Spare keyboard connected, if available | Whether the behavior returns under comparable conditions | A difference between keyboards can help narrow the input source, but is not conclusive proof of a failed key. |
| No intentional keyboard input | Whether captures occur while you are hands-off and whether an app or utility is active | This can reveal a timing or input pattern worth testing; it cannot by itself identify what sent input. |
Do not replace a keyboard solely because one test changes the behavior. First check the PrtSc key and any keyboard configuration or utility that could send or remap it. The Microsoft shortcut guide documents what PrtSc does, but does not recommend keyboard replacement as a fix.

Why Print Screen may open the snipping overlay
PrtSc is documented as a screenshot action, while Windows + Shift + S opens the snipping overlay. If pressing PrtSc appears to open the overlay rather than behaving as you expect, record exactly what you pressed and what appeared. Check whether the event happens with the original keyboard disconnected and a spare keyboard connected, if available. Also note any keyboard remapping or macro software that could change key behavior. Do not infer a version-specific Windows fault from the overlay alone: the cited general guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 but does not identify an affected build or a special repair for this symptom.
What to do if the checks do not stop it
If distinct captures continue after checking the delay and observing keyboard input, preserve the symptom details rather than applying an unverified system change. Record:

The Microsoft guide does not name a Windows build or Snipping Tool version with a confirmed recurring-capture bug, and it does not prescribe a universal repair for unexplained repeated captures. That means reinstalling the app, editing the registry or changing unrelated system settings cannot be presented as an evidence-backed fix for this symptom. Use the version and observation notes when seeking support so the issue can be assessed against the configuration where it occurs.
