In Snagit, “full screen” can mean two different things: an image of everything currently visible on a monitor, or a capture of an entire webpage or document that continues below (or beside) the viewport. Use an All-in-One capture for the visible desktop. Use Scrolling Capture when the content extends beyond the window.
The steps below cover both workflows, Windows and Mac differences, automatic and manual scrolling, quality fixes, and the documented limits that can affect results.
Choose the right Snagit capture mode
| What you need | Use this | What the result contains |
|---|---|---|
| Everything visible on a monitor right now | All-in-One capture of the complete visible screen | The current desktop or application view; nothing below the viewport |
| A whole webpage, including content below the fold | Scrolling Capture | A long image assembled while Snagit scrolls vertically, horizontally, or both ways |
| A long document in an application | Scrolling Capture, preferably manual when automatic scrolling is unreliable | The selected scrollable window, subject to application and platform support |
If the desired image ends at the bottom edge of what you can see, capture the visible screen. If more content is hidden below or to the side, do not use an ordinary region capture; start a scrolling capture instead.
Capture the complete visible screen
Use All-in-One capture
- Open Snagit’s Capture window.
- Select All-in-One so the capture can begin from the full-screen workflow.
- Start the capture. When Snagit displays its selection controls, select the complete visible screen you want in the image.
- Finish the capture and review it in Snagit Editor, where you can save or share the result.
The exact selection controls and their appearance can vary by Snagit version and platform. If you see a different control layout, use the current Capture window labels rather than assuming a Windows instruction applies to Mac.

Windows hotkey behavior
On Windows, TechSmith documents the global Print Screen key as a way to start a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture window. That means Print Screen does not independently choose a full-screen mode; it follows your saved capture configuration. OneClick starts with its documented default settings, so a OneClick result can differ from a Print Screen result. Check the Capture window whenever a shortcut or widget produces the wrong type of image.
Capture an entire webpage or long document
Start with All-in-One and select the scrollable window
- Open the Capture window and choose All-in-One.
- Start capture and select the browser window or application area containing the page or document.
- When Snagit presents scrolling controls, choose the direction needed: vertical, horizontal, or both.
- Let Snagit complete the scroll and assembly, then open the result in Snagit Editor to save or share it.
TechSmith’s current feature workflow describes using the scrolling controls and then scrolling the page before saving or sharing from Snagit Editor. Horizontal and vertical scrolling are supported, but not every application exposes a scrollable surface that Snagit can process.
Automatic Scrolling Capture
Automatic Scrolling Capture attempts to move the selected window vertically, horizontally, or in both directions. It is the convenient choice when the page has a conventional, stable scrollbar and the automatic arrows appear.
Manual Scrolling Capture
Manual Scrolling Capture gives you control over the area and the direction of movement. Use it when automatic arrows do not appear, when the page uses an unusual scrolling container, or when automatic movement stops at the wrong point. Scroll deliberately in one direction and allow Snagit to record each portion instead of rapidly changing direction.

- Resize the browser or application window. A larger, simpler window makes the scroll path easier to control.
- Keep the scrollbar out of the selection. Excluding it prevents the scrollbar track and thumb from becoming part of the final image and can reduce confusion during scrolling.
- Disable floating toolbars. Overlays that move with the page can create duplicated or misplaced elements.
- Scroll smoothly in one direction. TechSmith recommends avoiding fast, slow, or zigzag motion. Consistent movement gives Snagit a better chance to align successive portions.
- Close unrelated overlays. Cookie notices, chat panels, and other page elements can change position while the capture is being assembled; dismiss them when possible before starting.
Fix common Snagit full-screen and scrolling problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| You captured only what was visible, but needed the whole page | A normal region or visible-screen capture was used | Repeat the capture with All-in-One and select Scrolling Capture for the browser or document window. |
| Scrolling arrows do not appear | The browser or application may not expose a supported scrollable surface, or the selected area may be unsuitable | Resize the window, make sure the scrollable content is selected, and switch to Manual Scrolling Capture. |
| Automatic scrolling stops, duplicates content, or misses sections | Fast or irregular movement, floating controls, or an application that automatic scrolling cannot handle | Resize the window, exclude the scrollbar, disable floating toolbars, then retry with smooth movement. If it still fails, use manual scrolling. |
| The hotkey starts the wrong capture type | The Capture window is set to different options than expected, or OneClick is using its defaults | Review the current Capture window settings. On Windows, Print Screen follows those settings; do not assume OneClick uses the same configuration. |
| Automatic scrolling fails consistently | Third-party utilities, unsupported browsers or applications, incompatible hardware drivers, or security software can interfere | Temporarily close conflicting utilities where permitted, check for driver or security-software interference, and use Manual Scrolling Capture as the fallback. |
| The capture is clipped at a page section | The page changed while Snagit was moving, or the selected region did not include the complete scrollable area | Wait for the page to finish loading, remove overlays, select the scrollable window again, and use a slower, single-direction manual pass. |
Platform, edition, and version caveats
Windows and Mac shortcuts are version-specific
TechSmith’s Snagit 2023 help lists Windows Print Screen and Mac Control+Shift+C as ways to start a scrolling capture. Treat those combinations as version-specific instructions, not universal guarantees. If your current Capture window shows a different shortcut, follow the shortcut documented in that version’s help.

Mac App Store edition
TechSmith documents a limitation for the Mac App Store edition: Apple sandboxing requirements prevent full scrolling-capture functionality in that distribution. For a standard HTTP page, the documented alternative is to drag the URL onto Snagit. That workaround does not cover pages requiring a secure login or pages whose dynamic content is controlled by a static URL. The limitation was documented in 2021, so check current TechSmith support if it determines which edition you can use.
Snagit updates can change behavior
TechSmith’s Windows 2026 version history, updated July 23, 2026, lists fixes affecting manual scrolling capture and other capture issues. This is a reminder that interface details and scrolling behavior can change between releases; apply current updates and consult the help for your installed edition when a documented step does not match your screen. The listed Windows fixes should not be assumed to describe Mac behavior.
