Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a visible browser and Chrome’s full-screen switch: set headless: false and pass --start-fullscreen in Puppeteer’s args array.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
args: ['--start-fullscreen'],
});
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
// Keep the window open while you inspect it.
await new Promise(() => {});
This opens Chrome with its browser controls hidden in full-screen window mode. It is different from a maximized window, a larger page viewport, or a web page element entering DOM Fullscreen.
What “full-screen” means in Puppeteer
Three separate layers are commonly called full-screen:
| Layer | How to control it | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Browser visibility | headless: false |
Chrome opens as a visible desktop window instead of running invisibly. |
| Browser window mode | --start-fullscreen |
Chrome requests full-screen window mode at launch. |
| Page viewport | page.setViewport({width, height}) |
The emulated content area dimensions; it does not change the desktop window state. |
| Web-content fullscreen | element.requestFullscreen() |
A page element occupies the display after browser permission and a user-activation-compatible action. |
For the usual request—“show the Puppeteer-controlled Chrome window in full screen”—you need the first two settings together. Puppeteer launches headless by default, so supplying only the Chrome switch does not make a window appear.

Prerequisites and installation
Install Puppeteer
In a new Node.js project, install Puppeteer:
npm install puppeteer
The package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build. Puppeteer’s launch API works best with that downloaded browser; using an unrelated system Chrome version is not guaranteed to work.
Use puppeteer-core only with a browser path or channel
If you install puppeteer-core, provide either executablePath or channel. Unlike the full puppeteer package, puppeteer-core does not provide a browser binary for you.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer-core';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
executablePath: '/absolute/path/to/chrome',
args: ['--start-fullscreen'],
});
Launch a visible, full-screen Chrome window
Minimal ES-module example
Save this as fullscreen.mjs and run node fullscreen.mjs:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
args: ['--start-fullscreen'],
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
console.log('Page loaded:', await page.title());
await new Promise(() => {});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The unresolved promise keeps the process alive so you can see the window. In a real script, replace it with your work and let the finally block close Chrome.
CommonJS version
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
args: ['--start-fullscreen'],
});
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
console.log(await page.title());
await browser.close();
})();
Add a predictable viewport
A full-screen window does not guarantee a particular CSS viewport. Set one explicitly when your test or screenshot depends on exact dimensions:

const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({width: 1920, height: 1080, deviceScaleFactor: 1});
This controls the page’s emulated viewport, not whether Chrome’s toolbar is hidden or whether the operating system grants full-screen mode.
Full-screen versus maximized
Chrome documents --start-fullscreen and --start-maximized as different switches. Use maximized mode when you want normal Chrome controls and a window expanded to the available desktop area:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
args: ['--start-maximized'],
});
Do not pass both switches while trying to diagnose a layout issue. Pick the state your human operator or test actually requires. Window-manager policies, remote desktops, kiosk restrictions, and operating-system settings can still affect the result.

When the page itself must enter fullscreen
If your goal is a video, canvas, game, or other element filling the display, launching Chrome with --start-fullscreen is not sufficient. The page must call the DOM Fullscreen API, normally in response to a user gesture.
const button = await page.$('#fullscreen-button');
if (!button) throw new Error('Fullscreen button not found');
await button.click();
const isFullscreen = await page.evaluate(() => Boolean(document.fullscreenElement));
console.log({isFullscreen});
A page can also call element.requestFullscreen() from its own event handler and later call document.exitFullscreen(). Permissions, browser policy, and the site’s implementation determine whether the request succeeds. This is content fullscreen, not a launch-time window setting.

Useful launch options alongside full-screen
Keep arguments in one array
args accepts additional Chrome command-line arguments. Preserve any required arguments when composing configuration:
const chromeArgs = [
'--start-fullscreen',
'--disable-dev-shm-usage',
];
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: false, args: chromeArgs});
Only add flags you understand. Broad security-disabling flags can make a browsing session unsafe, especially when visiting untrusted URLs.
Choose the headless mode deliberately
headless: false: visible Chrome window; required for interactive full-screen observation.headless: true: modern headless Chrome; no desktop window is shown.headless: 'shell': the separate old headless-shell mode.
A headless session can still use a large viewport and produce screenshots, but it cannot display a desktop window for you to watch.
Set browser and page timeouts
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
args: ['--start-fullscreen'],
timeout: 30000,
});
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(60000);
These timeouts govern startup and navigation; they do not force full-screen mode.
Reliable workflow for tests and demos
- Install a compatible Puppeteer package and confirm Node.js can run your module format.
- Launch with
headless: falseand exactly one window-state switch. - Create a page and set its viewport if pixel dimensions matter.
- Navigate with an explicit
waitUntilcondition and a bounded timeout. - Perform any click required by the site before requesting content fullscreen.
- Capture diagnostics such as
await page.viewport(), the page URL, and title. - Close the browser in a
finallyblock so failed tests do not leave Chrome processes behind.
Troubleshooting
No window appears
Check that headless: false is present and that the script is running in a graphical desktop session. Containers, SSH sessions without a display, and CI runners commonly have no display server. In those environments, use headless mode or provide the runner’s supported display setup.

The window is large but still shows browser controls
You likely used --start-maximized, or the operating system/window manager ignored the full-screen request. Verify the exact argument spelling and test the same Chrome binary interactively. Maximized and full-screen are separate states.
The page is not the dimensions you expected
Window size and CSS viewport size are independent. Call page.setViewport() after creating the page, then log the returned viewport. Device scale factor changes rendering density, not the CSS width and height.
puppeteer-core cannot find Chrome
Supply a valid absolute executablePath or a supported channel. Check that the path is executable by the account running Node.js and that the browser version is compatible with your Puppeteer release.
A content-fullscreen request is rejected
Trigger it from a click or another user-activation-compatible action, confirm the selector exists, and inspect document.fullscreenElement. A launch flag cannot bypass page permissions or browser policy.
The script exits immediately
Node exits when no asynchronous work remains. Await your navigation and test actions, or deliberately keep the process alive during a manual demo. Always close the browser when the job is complete.

Or skip the browser setup
For a finished image or PDF rather than an interactive Chrome window, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. Its consent step accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also offers an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A direct call is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Equivalent Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

- Headful Chrome consumes desktop resources and needs a display, so it is usually slower and harder to parallelize than headless execution.
- Full-screen mode changes presentation, not network speed or page readiness. Use explicit waits and navigation timeouts for repeatable runs.
- Large viewports and retina scale increase rendering work and screenshot size. Choose the smallest dimensions that satisfy your test.
- Always record the browser version, operating-system display environment, viewport, and launch arguments when diagnosing visual differences.
- For unattended image or PDF generation, an API can avoid display-server setup; inspect response verdict and billing headers rather than assuming every request produced a clean page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Puppeteer make a headless browser full-screen?
No desktop window is displayed in headless mode. You can set a large viewport, but visible full-screen requires headless: false in a graphical environment.
Should I use --start-fullscreen or --start-maximized?
Use --start-fullscreen to request Chrome’s toolbar-hidden full-screen window state. Use --start-maximized when you want a normal window expanded to the available desktop area.
Why does requestFullscreen() need a click?
The DOM Fullscreen API is page-controlled and commonly subject to user-activation and permission rules. A Chrome launch switch controls the browser window, not those page rules.
